Sabotage
Genre: Historic Tactical Shooter
Publisher: Gamecock Media Group
Developer: Replay Studios
Platforms: PC X360
Release Date: Q4 2008
Official Site: http://www.sabotage1943.com/

Since being unveiled in July 2006, Replay Studios' WWII stealth action game Sabotage seemingly went covert after missing its projected Q4 release on the PC. However, the indie developer's project has emerged from the shadows today, as Gamecock Media Group announced that it had acquired the publishing rights for a PC and Xbox 360 version of the game, due out in fall 2008.

It would appear the reason for the hold was a change in direction for the project. Still inspired by the life of British special operative and WWII heroine Violette Szabo, Sabotage now features a surreal storyline in which players act out Violette's missions as she lays unconscious in a hospital dormitory.

Not entirely unlike Pandemic Studios' upcoming stealth action game Saboteur, players will be dropped behind enemy lines in occupied Europe to violently undermine the Third Reich. As the game plays out through the heroine's subconscious, the game will feature stylized artwork and combat sequences.

Codename Panzers: Cold War
Genre: Real-Time Strategy
Publisher: 10tacle Studios, Electronic Arts
Developer: Stormregion
Platforms: PC Exclusive
Release Date: Q1 2008
Official Site: http://www.panzers-coldwar.org/

Leipzig was a fitting place for us to get a look at the next strategy game in Stormregion's Codename Panzer series. That's because Codename Panzers: Cold War will be set in 1949 Berlin, when the city was divided between the West and the Soviet Union. However, in this alternate history, an incident during the Berlin Airlift triggers a war, and you'll have to guide the Western forces to victory.

The game's campaign will let you play an 18-mission campaign mostly as NATO, though there will be three Soviet missions to let you see the perspective from the other side. What's exciting about the campaign is that it will be playable with another person cooperatively online. We can't think of another real-time strategy in recent years that has such a feature.

The campaign battles will be built around the concept of seizing and holding strategic points on a map, which are called prestige flags. Capturing a flag starts generating prestige points, which you can use to purchase fresh units and reinforcements, as well as other items in the game because they serve as currency. But you won't have to worry about base building because units arrive on to the battlefield in logical ways. They may arrive by road, rail, ships, or even helicopters. The weapons and vehicles in the game will also adhere to history. Instead of upgrading units, you'll get a chance to equip them with different systems.

Infantry are handled in a different manner because squads are highly modular. You can custom design squads by matching different types of squads with officers. Meanwhile, the different squad leaders can erect different types of structures. The ranger digs foxholes, the medic constructs a first-aid tent, the lieutenant builds a fox tower, and the Green Berets construct tunnels that can network across a map, allowing you to send units deep into the enemy rear.

Cold War will introduce the newest version of Stormregion's proprietary Gepard graphics engine, and the level of detail is impressive. We're talking excellent time-of-day lighting, as well as intricate shadowing and reflection effects. There's also an impressive physics engine that makes everything from large-scale destruction to the rag-doll animation on individual soldiers look really cool. The best demonstration of this was watching how the direction of a bombing run can send a construction crane smashing into the buildings around it. We watched it collapse three different directions, crushing the structures beneath it in a realistic manner.

The Codename Panzers games have always proven more popular in Europe than in the US. There's plenty in Cold War for fans to like, and hopefully the shift away from World War II will make the game more attractive to those tired of World War II games. Cold War is due out in the first quarter of 2008.

Saboteur
Genre: Historic Action Adventure
Publisher: Pandemic Studios
Developer: Pandemic Studios
Platforms: X360 PS3 (IGN says PC also)
Release Date: TBA 2008
Official Site: http://www.saboteurthegame.com/

It's safe to say that games have gone to the World War II idea well one time too many. But then, that most epic conflict in world history has proved to be a fertile source of inspiration for game developers. Despite the familiar nature of most action games centered on the war, Southern California-based Pandemic, of Destroy All Humans!, Star Wars: Battlefront, and Mercenaries fame, is trying its hand at offering a new take on that familiar ground with Saboteur, an original third-person action game. We recently visited the developer to get a look at an early work-in-progress version to find out how its game isn't going to fit into the stereotypical WWII mold.

Saboteur separates itself from the pack of WWII games out of the gate with its story. Whereas the majority of WWII games cast you in the role of a soldier fighting in the Allied forces, Saboteur casts you as an average Irish dude named Sean. Though the war is a bummer for those in Europe, Sean was basically OK with it until a fateful day when friends of his were murdered by German forces. However, the tragic events don't inspire the rough-and-ready Irishman to enlist and become part of the war effort. Turns out, Sean's motivations are a bit more "focused." Rather than try and do his part to take down the Axis forces, Sean's goal in the game is to take revenge on the Germans who took out his friends. One in particular seems destined for a special kind of murdering when the time comes.

Though Pandemic wasn't ready to fully disclose the details of Saboteur's gameplay, there were a few elements that will be key to the experience. The basic framework of the game is third-person action. You'll guide Sean on his run of revenge through, above, and around the streets of Paris. You'll be able to pick up weapons and drive vehicles as needed to ensure you get your job done. Sean's lack of formal training will influence the game's action, as he'll be a little rough around the edges and more improvisational than your typical soldier. The stealth elements in the game range from your standard sneaking around rooftops to avoid being seen to, of course, murdering quietly. One of the interesting stealth aspects is that in some cases, you'll need to quickly blend in with the crowds, so you might have to grab an unsuspecting lady and make out to keep from being discovered. One thing to note is that Sean is in this strictly for payback, so while you'll clash with Germans, you're not necessarily fighting for the Allied forces. This isn't to say you won't wind up helping them out if your goals happen to match theirs, but it's not really a focus.

Besides taking pride in your kills, killing enemies restores hope to the city. You get a visual representation of this via the game's slick color mechanic, which is known as "will to fight." If you can take out Germans in parts of the city that are displayed in black and white, you'll restore color to the city and the residents will be happy. No, you're not joined by a sun god in the form of a wolf on the adventure, though Saboteur's color mechanic does sound a bit like Okami's. Pandemic had been mulling over how to pull it off for several years, and the advent of new hardware finally convinced the team to implement it to their standard of quality.

The visuals in the work-in-progress version of the game are looking incredibly sharp, even at this early stage. The city is a large playground, and as with Mercenaries, it will provide a large amount of ground to cover. You'll be able to roam the streets, take to the roofs, or drive around the country. While exact details aren't final, it seems as though you'll have a fat chunk of Paris and a modest chunk of the surrounding countryside to adventure in. There seems to be a good amount of interactivity with the environment already, though we're not sure if it's going to go to the Mercenaries-style "Look, ma! I leveled the city!" extremes. Character models are looking solid, though animation is understandably rough given the game's early state. Color is a key element of the action. Besides the polar changes between the black-and-white and colorized areas in the city, the game's color palette--inspired by the French countryside--is lush, with deep tones that complement the game's cinematic look.

The game's audio sounds as though it's going to take some interesting detours. Saboteur should have the expected array of voice and sound effects that take advantage of the sound hardware of the new consoles. However, the soundtrack is shaping up to be an interesting element. The team is aiming to incorporate period jazz and some new takes on classic pieces to give the game a unique feel. The juxtaposition of the low-key music and some of the action should make for some very cool moments and sell the game's cinematic presentation.

Based on what we've seen, Saboteur is looking like a promising action game that may just offer a decidedly different World War II experience. The game seems like it should be a good showcase for what Pandemic does well--open-world gameplay, third-person action, big explosions, and slick tech. At the same time, the stealth elements seem to flesh out what's been tried in Mercenaries. The dynamic world and the color mechanic are also pretty interesting and should further help the game stand out if they're worked in properly. There's a considerable amount of potential here, especially given Pandemic's recent track record, so we're aching to see how it all comes together. Saboteur is currently slated to ship on next-gen consoles next year. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

Huxley
Genre: Modern Online Role-Playing
Publisher: Webzen
Developer: Webzen
Platforms: PC X360
Release Date: TBA
Official Site: http://www.webzengames.com/Game/Huxley/default.asp

We recently had a chance to take an updated look at the PC version of Huxley, the sci-fi massively multiplayer shooter from developer Webzen. The game will take place on a futuristic Earth split between two factions, the sapiens (the futuristic version of humans) and the alternatives, both of which face threats from hybrids (monstrous crossbreeds between the two races). You'll play as a futuristic soldier belonging to either the sapiens or alternatives factions and will win victories for your nation in real-time first-person shooter battles.

In the game, you'll play as one of three character types, or "battle styles": the enforcer, the game's heavily armored, close-range profession; the avenger, the game's medium-armor assault class; or the phantom, the lightly armored sniper-and-scout class. These professions will determine which types of armor and weapons you can use from Huxley's nine different weapon classes, which will include machine guns, shotguns, sniper rifles, and rocket launchers, as well as more esoteric weapon classes like the ballistic "flinger" and the energy-based optical rifle. Producer Kijong Kim suggests that the action in the game will be a bit closer to the arcade-style action of the Quake series than the methodical pacing of the team-based Counter-Strike, though Huxley will have elements of both games.

To go with all those weapons and armor pieces, Huxley will use a paper-doll inventory system that shows which piece of armor is equipped on which body part on your character. In addition, each armor piece your character finds or buys can be slotted with an upgrade that grants an additional skill to your character. The game will apparently have more than 100 skills at launch; these skills represent the kind of powerful advantages you'd expect to pick up as a bonus item in a competitive first-person shooter, such as the ability to sprint quickly, to cloak yourself by turning invisible, to double-jump, to tackle enemies with a melee attack, and some unusual skills, such as becoming immune to headshots (highly damaging, direct weapon hits to your character's noggin) and automatically detonating your corpse as a blinding flash grenade when you fall in battle. Therefore, the game will have a strategic element as you swap different skill-infused armor slots into your character's inventory to prepare for different battles in which, depending on the situation, you may need to be stronger, faster, or sneakier than your adversaries.

While you'll likely start your life in a safe city, which is also where the game's weapon and item crafting will take place, you'll eventually find yourself on a battlefield, duking it out against computer-controlled hybrid monsters or players from the opposing faction. Currently, the game is planned to launch with two major cities (one for each faction) and eight smaller cities, along with about 80 battlefields, each of which can house up to 200 players at once. We were shown numerous concept-art images that depict battlefields based on ruined real-world locations, such as waterlogged harbors and half-destroyed skyscraper complexes. We also had a chance to see a prototype battlefield in action, which resembled a craggy series of foothills at night, crawling with sharp-toothed, multi-eyed hybrids.

For much of the game, you'll spend your time either fighting actively in competitive battles or performing the game's many quests, which will take the form of story-based tasks, field quests, and large-scale "raid" quests with large groups of other players. The developers at Webzen plan to encourage players to play together by letting them form small squads of up to four players each, larger platoons with five squads each, and finally, companies, which include five platoons (with a total of up to 100 players in each).

Groups will also be able to fight battles on the game's battlefields, either in traditional shooter modes such as freeform deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the flag, as well as the game's radar domination and part pickup modes. Radar domination requires two opposing teams to try to capture and hold various radar towers throughout the map by holding the area nearby, similar to the Battlefield series' conquest mode. Part pickup requires teams to scavenge various robot parts on the battlefield in a competitive race to see which team can assemble a gigantic mech first. When you pick up and carry a part, you'll act much like the flag carrier in a CTF game--if you're taken down, you'll drop the part and give the enemy a chance to recover it.

Apparently, battlefields where players fight against the monstrous hybrids will allow up to 64 players at once, while competitive battlefields will allow up to 200. Certain battlefields will allow only player-versus-monsters battles, while some may allow monster hunting and competitive play at once. Both quests and multiplayer battles may take place in battlefields with various multiperson vehicles--these vehicles will spawn in and out of the game, similar to the vehicles in the Battlefield series, though opposing teams can hack one another's vehicles to steal them away.

Though the game still has many months to go before launch, it already looks quite impressive thanks to the powerful Unreal 3 technology under its hood. The early prebeta version of the game we saw in action featured expansive outdoor areas for cities with highly detailed character models for players wearing bulky power armor and carrying futuristic guns. The battlefield environments we saw were also quite huge and had varied layouts, such as the quest area we saw that lay just below the ruins of a massive city, split by a river that could be forded only by blasting a ruined train car from above to collapse down into the water to form a bridge. Huxley looks very promising and highly distinctive, and the game should launch sometime later this year for the PC and Xbox 360.

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness
Genre: Adventure
Publisher: Hothead Games
Developer: Hothead Games
Platforms: PC X360
Release Date: TBA (Episode One coming in 2007)
Official Site: http://www.rainslick.com/

You might think that, with an upcoming game featuring a dramatic title like "On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness," Canadian developer Hothead Games would do something eccentric with its first unveiling of the game in motion. Instead, the developer took the old-fashioned route and showed off the title in a panel Friday evening at the Penny Arcade Expo. Hothead Games president Vlad Ceraldi led the panel, which featured lead programmer Cary Breeswalt, lead designer Darren Evenson, producer Joel DeYoung, and legendary developer Ron Gilbert, who is a design consultant on the project with Hothead. The 50-minute panel offered a glimpse at the latest trailer for the game, a live demo of the PC game, and a question-and-answer session with the assembled media.

The new trailer featured a montage of 2D and 3D art taken from the game. Penny Arcade's Gabe and Tycho are shown in their office during a dark and stormy night, during which time a series of still images and action shots are cut in. The trailer ends with an image of impending doom: a large robot that fans of the series will recognize as the prime version of a fruit-destroying mechanoid looming in the background.

Once the trailer was over, the group jumped into a live demo of the game. The narrator heard in the trailer was featured in the opener of the demo, which takes players to the character creation in the game. Players will be able to customize their virtual self in the game by tweaking a number of features that include body, face, clothes, gender, and body shape. Once the 3D character is made, it's then converted to a 2D image that is put in each of the 2D cutscenes in the game. The first cinematic in the game sets the stage for the unfolding drama: your character is shown doing some yard-work, minding its own business until tragedy strikes in the form of a giant robot stomping through the house. Following the house-stomping, Gabe and Tycho are shown heading off in hot pursuit of the creature while your character is left to go through a gamut of emotions that clearly settle on revenge.

Following the setup, Hothead reps loaded a saved game that had a party of three for players to control: your character, along with Gabe and Tycho. A mouse-driven interface will let players direct the trio to any point onscreen. As the trio were directed down the dark street, a 2D cinematic complete with dramatic music appeared, and a mysterious stranger with a leaky bag was shown streaking out from an alley and into an abandoned building. Once the cinematic ran, a conversation bubble kicked in and the trio headed off in search of the stranger, making their way through a pack of hobos. Proximity to the enemies will trigger a fight that switches the game display to an FF-style face off between your party and the group of hobos. Reps noted there will be no random encounters in the game; combat will be initiative-based, with attacks requiring varying amount of time to be performed. The party in this stage of the demo only had access to regular attacks, but reps stated that as they progressed through the demo, the trio of fighters would gain stronger ones. As the battle continued, reps noted that if players hit the space bar while being attacked, it will be possible to block and even counterattack enemies (provided your timing is good). At the end of the battle, the trio of characters was shown collecting experience and money, as well as having their health restored to full.

The next battle with hobos found the Hothead crew calling out the weapons being used by the party of three. Each character will have its own unique, upgradeable arm. Your character will be packing the rake used in the opening cutscene, while Tycho will rock a tommy gun, and Gabe makes the most of his bare fists. At the end of the battle, the trio engaged in some banter before heading into the run-down apartment building the mysterious stranger dashed into. Upon entering the building, the game shifts gears to your standard point-and-click adventure, with the trio of adventurers engaging in some dialogue-tree action. The trio opted to examine some rooms in the building on their own, following a suspicious warning from the landlord. Each of the rooms they inspected featured unsettling touches that included giant mutated rats and crazy arcane rituals. They all elicited some commentary amongst the trio, which did a good job of showcasing the genuinely funny dialogue that's in line with the humor of the web comic.

Eventually the slumlord vanished from sight during the room search, and the trio followed through a door that is left open. This last room revealed the dark secret of the building: it's a hobo sweatshop. It seems the slumlord has assembled a factory of hobos to create smaller versions of the robot seen at the start of the game. The smaller bots should be quite familiar to fans of the Fruit Fornicator (yes, we cleaned up the name so as not to offend those with delicate constitutions). Realizing the threat to society posed by the robots, the trio headed to confront the slumlord. Due to the high hobo population, the trip entailed a number of battles. Fortunately, the trio had a number of new attacks that become available through earned experience. The highlights of the battle included special attacks unique to the characters. Each attack has its own minigame, and they range from button-mashing, matching onscreen prompts, or timed button presses. Success at the minigames directly affects just how much damage your attacks will do.

Besides the unique attacks for each player, you'll also be able to perform team-up maneuvers between two players, which dole out considerably more damage. If you manage to take out an enemy with a special attack, you'll be rewarded by a goofy, over-the-top death. When the trio finally reached the slumlord, a boss battle ensued, which found the trio throwing down. Unfortunately, the crafty villain was hiding behind a wall of hobos that must be taken out before he can be damaged, which led to a lengthy fight. Fortunately the challenge provided by the battle was the perfect chance to show off the game's item system, which lets players restore health or even attack with special combat items. Although the demo ended before the final blow was landed against the slumlord, we were more than pleased by what we saw.

Following the demo, the question-and-answer session served up a number of interesting bits of info about the game. The biggest bit of news was the release schedule for the game. Ceraldi noted that the team was pleased with how Telltale Games handled the recent Sam and Max episodic content and, while it wouldn't be possible for them to release installments as frequently, Hothead intends to release a new episode in the adventure every few months. Each installment is planned to offer roughly 5-6 hours of gameplay. Other minor details that came up revolved around gameplay. It was pointed out that, should a character fall in battle, it would be possible to resurrect it with an item. It will possible for players to use their character data in subsequent installments in the series. As far as which next-generation platform is actually referenced in press materials for the game, Ceraldi said news would be coming soon. [UPDATE] At a follow-up panel today, Ceraldi revealed that the next-generation platform in question would, in fact, be the Xbox 360. Ceraldi noted that the entire Penny Arcade Adventures series would be available for download from Xbox Live Marketplace as episodes are released.

Based on this early look at where Hothead is going with the title, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness has a lot of promise. The gameplay wears its various old-school influences proudly on its sleeve, and we have to say we approve. The mix of point-and-click adventuring with Square-style turn-based gameplay is a smart combo that works well. The writing and art appear to be on point and capture the look and feel of the Penny Arcade comic on a larger scale. We're anxious to see more of the game as it heads toward its release later this year. Look for more in the months to come. Until then, check back on our live show this Saturday from PAX, where we'll have a live demo of the game.
