Arsenal recorded their first Premiership win at the Emirates Stadium after a 3-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Saturday. An opening goal from William Gallas, his first for the club, a Phil Jagielka own goal and a Thierry Henry header finally ended the Gunners' home blues.

It looked to be yet another day at frustration for Arsene Wenger's side at their new state-of-the-art home after a disappointing first half display that epitomised their season so far: a lot of possession, a constant string of dainty passes, but little in the way of penetration.

New signing Gallas had a gilt-edge chance after four minutes following Tomas Rosicky's through-ball, but the Frenchman fired wide.

Ten minutes later, his compatriot Thierry Henry, back in the side after two games on the sidelines, put a header over the bar when the back of the net looked a far likelier destination. Was it going to be one of those alarmingly tepid Emirates afternoons?

Henry certainly thought so, the ever-sulking hitman taking his anger out on Sheffield United defender Phil Jagielka with a rash high challenge that, luckily for Henry, only earned a stern talking to from the referee - and not a booking.

Then, just minutes before half time, the Gunners were let off the hook after Mikele Leigertwood looked to have scored a belter from outside the box. Much to manager Neil Warnock's dismay, however, the goal was disallowed due Rob Hulse's acrobatic foul on Johan Djourou in the box.

The second half was an entirely different affair, and once Gallas had opened his account for Arsenal, the floodgates soon opened. The Frenchman scored Arsenal's second-ever Premiership goal in the Emirates after some crafty build-up play by Henry and Cesc Fabregas in the 65th minute.

Five minutes later, the score had doubled after Henry's low cross from the left was turned beyond United 'keeper Ian Bennet via the knee of the hapless Jagielka.

And Henry added the third ten minutes from time after nodding in from Emmanuel Eboue's cross from the right. It was only the Frenchman's first goal this year from open play, and his second in an impecunious season's start.

After the match, Wenger admitted that the first half had given him cause for concern. Speaking to Sky Sports, the wily tactician said: "I was a bit nervous after the first half and there was certainly a lot more pressure on us after the break.

"But it looked from the outset that we would score, so I was confident. You never know, though, we've had some bad experiences here."

The Gunners move up to eighth place while United, after Warnock's 1000th competitive match as a manager, stay rooted to the bottom of the table.

Arsène Wenger: 'We kept our nerve'

on a 3-0 victory...
"It was not as easy as the result suggests because Sheffield defended well, played well. I felt that we started the game well and then, you could see the fact that we have not won here played on the mind of the players, 15 minutes after we didn't score it started to play on our minds, and we played a little bit approximate football, in our passing. At half time we realised that we have to continue to do things well, defend well, attack well. Then we put them under pressure, the goal came from Gallas, who is a winner, and has shown that again today. It was a big relief, you could see that from the team it was a big relief. "

"Overall I felt that the goal would come, if we do not make a mistake at the back. I was convinced that we would win the game but it was down to keeping a clean sheet, and in the first half we gave them some liberties we should have not, maybe. And in the second half we were much better."

"I felt that we were too nervous, and by being too nervous we rushed a little bit our game, we were not clean enough technically, and against a team like that if you start to lose balls in the middle of the park when you should not loose the ball, they start to become dangerous and think 'oh, we have a chance here'. I feel that we kept our nerve, and that despite the fact that we did not play very well in the last 20 minutes of the first half, we came back with more quicker passing, more determination - as as well quicker defending. When we lost the ball we put them under pressure - what we didn't do enough in the first half."

on a change of formation from Sunday...
"I wanted to rest Hleb, I wanted to give some competition to Thierry Henry, and I want to keep the freedom to play with two strikers at home. If I start - no disrespect to Sheffield United - to play at home, with 60,000 fans, without strikers... It has to be adapted, the system is not forever, but you have to keep an offensive formula at home, and against team where you have to attack."

on Tuesday's clash against Porto...
"I feel we have a big challenge, if you look at the English teams who have beaten Porto or Benfica you do not find many. So we have a big challenge, and do what nobody has done recently in England, is to beat them first. What I expect from Porto is very good technical level in the middle of the park, they keep the ball well, and from the rest... I don't know what to expect because they play with two strikers, with three, with one... I don't know too much, but I know we want to win this game, because if we win this game after [the win at] Hamburg, we are in a very, very strong position to qualify."

Arsenal draw West Brom in Carling Cup
Arsenal will travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Third Round of the Carling Cup this season following Saturday's draw.
The tie will be played in the week commencing October 23.

Arsenal’s run to the Champions League Final last season gave them so many things — confidence, experience, exposure, respect — but it has robbed them of the element of surprise.

Even Arsène Wenger accepts that the Porto side who visit Emirates Stadium this evening will have been affected by his side’s narrow defeat to Barcelona last May. Taking a point off last year’s runners-up on their home ground always has merit after all.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s game, Wenger re-affirmed his side’s potential to go one better than last year. Yet he knows that respect comes at a price.

“The fact we believe we can go into the Final again is compensated by the fact that we would not surprise the likes Real Madrid or Barcelona tomorrow if we played them,” he said.

“They would expect a different game now and for us to be strong. Certainly, Porto will be more cautious in this game than if they had played us a year ago. But on the other hand, we will be stronger and believe more that we can do it.”

Having beaten Hamburg so comfortably on Matchday 1, the Frenchman says this game could be pivotal. Remember much of last season’s Champions League momentum was built up in that run of five straight group wins.

“I am convinced that if we beat Porto we are close to qualifying,” said Wenger. “But when you look at Portuguese teams, they do not lose easily in England. It's a big, big task. I hope we are able to keep the ball, adapt to their pace and take advantage of any situation created.”

Freddie Ljungberg (knee) and Johan Djourou (foot) missed training on Tuesday but were expected to recover in time to face the 2004 Champions League winners. Otherwise Wenger will have at his disposal the same squad that secured Arsenal’s first Premiership win at their new stadium over the weekend.

Porto’s victory over Monaco in the Final two years ago was the last game of Jose Mourinho’s reign. The manager left for Chelsea and the bulk of that team broke up. Dutchman Co Adriaanse rebuilt and led them to the title last season but Jesualdo Ferreira has taken over since then. Wenger remains highly respectful.

“I think Co Adriannse is a great coach,” said Wenger, “but the guy who has come in looks to have a lot of experience and a proven record in Portuguese football too.

“To me, Anderson looks like one of their main players. He is a young Brazilian boy - very strong, very creative. The report I got of their game on Friday night said he came on and changed the game.

“Also Helder Postiga has shown ingredients of a very good player. Tottenham maybe gave him up too early.

“I feel they have a very strong midfield which Paulo Asunciao dictates. At the back Pepe and Bruno Alves look technically very strong. They are always buzzing down the flanks and they [take up] many dangerous positions but Anderson is certainly one of the main threats.”
