No nonsense central defender Thomas Vermalen insists that his injury days are behind and he is ready to play regularly after a long injury lay-off where he virtually missed all of last season.

The Belgian managed to get on for the full 90 minutes in the midweek Champions League match against Marseille and put in an exceptional performance despite having a serious lack of match time recently.

Vermaelen said on his recent injuries and his desire to play regularly again:

Of course, as it has been a difficult time for me, especially last year being out for pretty much the whole season. I came back strong, had a great pre-season and played the first four games and then I got injured on the other [Achilles]. I was not too stressed about it, as I knew what it was. I had experience of it from last season, so I knew that it would only take six weeks for me to come back. I was not worried. Of course it is the main thing for me at the moment to get the 90 minutes under my belt. I trained hard to come back and I feel good and great and it is always good to have 90 minutes again. It is up to the boss [to play me regularly] – he makes the decision. I can’t make the decision but what I said is that I feel good – great – and I hope that I can play on the pitch.

The dilemma now is who to pair the Belgian with at the back. With Koscielny playing out of his skin and Mertesacker providing the needed aerial defence for set-pieces it will be a tough choice for Wenger. Although in saying this as Koscielny was brought up as a right-back there is also an opportunity to play him on the right in place of the inexperienced Jenkinson, who looked well out of depth in midweek. Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny believes prolific captain Robin van Persie is currently the best striker in the world.

Van Persie has scored ten goals in nine Premier League starts this season, including a hat-trick in the 5-3 win against Chelsea, to help Arsenal reverse their dismal start.

The Gunners' reliance on their captain, who is out of contract in summer 2013, has led to accusations they are a one-man team. However, despite Van Persie's goalscoring heroics this season, he was surprisingly not named on the FIFA Ballon d'Or shortlist, which purports to list the top 23 players in the world.

When he learnt the news of Van Persie's omission, Szczesny was stunned. "I think it's ridiculous [he's not on the Ballon d'Or shortlist] - he's probably got the best goalscoring record at the moment," Szczesny told Sky Sports News.

"We know how good he is - even at Chelsea when they equalised late on, we still felt like we were going to go on and win. He just came up with two goals right at the end, and I believe he is at the moment the best striker in the world."

Meanwhile, Arsenal's vice-captain Thomas Vermaelen insists the club will still compete for a top-four place even if Van Persie, who is notoriously injury-prone, is forced to miss a few games. "Robin is a world-class player, an amazing striker," Vermaelen said.

"But I think we have a big squad and he can't play every game. We have enough strikers to fit in in his place who can decide a game, like Gervinho."

Arsenal’s little Russian Andrei Arshavin has delivered a rather blunt assessment of himself since joining the gunners with Arsenal’s highest transfer fee of £15m, saying his performances as a whole have been average.

No doubt Arshavin has shown glimpses of brilliance during his time at the Eimirates, but at times his work ethic and hot and cold performances has lead to a divide in opinion amongst Arsenal fans.

Speaking honestly, I think my performances for Arsenal have been average. I’ve done some good things, but I don’t assess my game on goals or assists. I look at the whole picture. Normally when I’m on the pitch I take control of a game but I haven’t really done that here. I’m an extra tool in the team rather than the main one, so it’s been difficult. Ideally, I’d like to play closer to a forward.

While at times the Russian has been disappointing, Wenger often defends him by pointing out his statistics where last season he gathered the most assists out of anyone in an Arsenal shirt, including the likes of Nasri and Fabregas. Arsenal star Gervinho believes former Lille team-mate Eden Hazard would be a success in England if he moved to the Premier League.

Hazard revealed earlier this week he is likely to leave Lille at the end of the season for a new challenge.

A host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are thought to be chasing the Belgium international, but the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain are also admirers of the 20-year-old.

Gervinho, who left Lille in the summer for Arsenal, is a big admirer of Hazard and feels his former team-mate would be a hit in England.

"Hazard is a young player with enormous quality," Gervinho told French radio station RMC Sports.

"If he has decided to leave, it is normal for clubs to be interested, as he has the level to triumph in a big league like England.

"Eden has learned a lot at Lille, and I believe he could succeed abroad. Where he goes is up to the clubs. But it will be a big operation."

Первое, что бросается в глаза: прибыль клуба до вычета налогов упала почти на две третьих. Оборот сократился больше чем на 100 миллионов – с £ 379,9 млн до £ 255,7 млн. В отчёте управляющей компании Arsenal Holdings этот результат называют ожидаемым. Причина – сокращение числа сделок с недвижимостью и сокращение доходов от продажи футболистов.

Для начала о непрофильной деятельности клуба. Пик прибыльности операций с недвижимостью пришёлся на прошлый финансовый цикл. Тогда клуб вовсю распродавал площади, полученные после переезда на новый стадион. Был реализован проект Highbury Square – компания в прошлом году продала 362 квартиры в этом комплексе, выручив порядка £ 134 млн. На сей раз было выкуплено лишь 69 апартаментов, и осталось их совсем немного – 16.

В общем, оборот по сделкам с недвижимостью будет только сокращаться. Но это не бьёт по бюджету "канониров", ведь большая часть вырученных средств шла на погашение кредитов и другие нужды, связанные с реализацией проектов в районе Хайбери. Поэтому прибыль, в отличие от выручки, как раз выросла, пусть и незначительно – с £ 11 до 13 млн.

А вот с футбольными статьями бюджета дело обстоит иначе. Доходы, связанные с продажей телеправ, спонсорскими и рекламными контрактами, а также реализацией билетов и абонементов, остаются на прежнем уровне – порядка £ 225 млн. В то же время расходы на зарплаты неминуемо растут – и это несмотря на то что "Арсенал" часто упрекают за нежелание удерживать лидеров, повышая им оклады. Зарплатная ведомость "канониров" за год выросла примерно на £ 14 млн.
А вот прибыль от продажи игроков значительно сократилась – с £ 38,1 млн в 2010 году до £ 6,3 млн в 2011-м. Нужно отметить, что ключевые сделки нынешнего года в эту ведомость не вошли – Насри и Фабрегас покинули клуб уже после 31 мая. Можно не сомневаться, что расставание с ними позволит в нынешнем финансовом году вновь увеличить футбольную прибыль.

Но это только подтверждает истину, с которой не готовы мириться многие поклонники "канониров" — "Арсенал" прибылен, но ценой своей скромной трансферной стратегии. Пока "канониры" служат "донором" для более богатых клубов и продают своих игроков с выгодой, они зарабатывают больше, чем тратят. Но стоит серьёзно вложиться в усиление команды, и ситуация станет не столь благоприятной.

Но пока факт остаётся фактом – несмотря на то что прибыль от футбольной деятельности сократилась до £ 2 млн, а суммарная прибыль до выплаты налогов упала с £ 56 млн (это лучший показатель в истории клуба) до £ 14,8 млн, "Арсенал" остаётся одним из самых финансово здоровых клубов Англии. По многим показателям прибыльности "канониры" превосходят даже "МЮ", правда, у манкунианцев своя история, связанная с реструктуризацией долгов владельцев по кредитам.

Так или иначе, на данный момент реальной прибылью могут похвастать лишь единицы клубов премьер-лиги, и на фоне какого-нибудь "Вулверхэмптона" "канониры" выглядят вполне успешно. Но вот тягаться с глубоко убыточными из-за своих непомерных трансферных трат "Манчестер Сити" или "Челси" в таблице, при этом сохраняя положительный финансовый баланс, — задача весьма трудная.
