England captain John Terry believes no player is guaranteed a place in the team following Frank Lampard's omission from the side which beat Bulgaria on Friday night Chelsea midfielder Lampard was dropped from a competitive international for which he has been available for the first time in four years as the Three Lions triumphed 3-0 in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Sofia.

It was also the first non-friendly international that both Lampard and the injured Steven Gerrard have not started since the 2002 World Cup quarter-final against Brazil in Japan.

But Terry believes the entire squad could face the same fate as Lampard.

Terry said: "I was delighted for Gary. He has done very well the last couple of years.

"To play and get his first goal for England would have been special for Gary and everyone was pleased for him.

"Chris was very comfortable. Even in the dressing room beforehand he looked very assured and confident in himself.

"I thought he put in a very good performance."
When asked if the Chelsea midfielder is no longer an automatic choice, Terry said: "I think that goes for all of us, myself included, everyone in the squad.

"We saw the manager earlier in the week leave Rio Ferdinand out, so we all feel it.

"What we are seeing is competition all over the park for places.

"The youngsters who have come in have brought a lot of enthusiasm into the camp and there is a real emphasis on the way the team wants to go.

"They are a big part of that and a big part of England's future. It is down to the manager at the end of the day.

"But we are all here, all wanting the same outcome, and that's for England to go through to the finals and do well."

Two of the newcomers impressed alongside Terry in defence in Gary Cahill, who scored on his first competitive start for England, and debutant Chris Smalling.

Raul Meireles insists he did not leave Liverpool for Chelsea because of financial reasons.

The Portuguese midfielder was a surprise departure from Anfield in the closing stages of transfer deadline day.

Meireles handed in a transfer request prior to sealing his move to Stamford Bridge just before the close of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old found himself down the pecking order at Liverpool at the start of the season, but he is adamant his move to Stamford Bridge had nothing to do with money.

"These are things that happen in football. I can only say good things about Liverpool, it was a fantastic year," Meireles told RTPN.

"People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money. It was not because of that, I will explain it later, things are still fresh.

"It all happened very fast. I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool, but I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there."

Meireles admitted linking up again with former Porto coach Andre Villas-Boas played a big part in his decision to move to Chelsea.
"I was very happy with his interest in my signature," added Meireles. "The most important thing is to give my all every time and try to help Chelsea win titles."

Theo Walcott believes England team-mate Frank Lampard still has a role to play for his country.

Lampard's long-term future with England has come into question after he started on the bench for England's 3-0 win over Bulgaria on Friday.

It was the first time in four years the midfielder was dropped from a competitive fixture that he has been available to play.

Fabio Capello warned Lampard and England's senior players that they are not guaranteed a place in his side, sparking speculation that the Chelsea man may no longer feature in England's plans.

However, Walcott, who started against Bulgaria, believes Lampard still has a lot to offer and that competition for places is good for the squad.

"Frank is an experienced, great player," said Walcott. "Everyone's spot is up for grabs.

"There's so much competition, with everyone playing every week for Premier League teams.

"You need to be on your toes and if you're playing well the manager will pick you.

"Frank's got plenty to offer still.

"Being professional, the players just get on with their jobs. There's no sulking if you're on the bench - you just want to go out and prove the manager wrong."
