And he feels the experienced Dutchman will be the talismanic figure to give the Gunners the leadership on the pitch they so badly need.

He said: "Robin van Persie loves the club. He's attached to the club. He's a technical leader on the football pitch.

"Robin van Persie speaks his mind with everybody but without bad feelings. I think that's an interesting quality and he's one of the players who can lead this group.

"He will be more vocal than Cesc. They are different personalities.

"The only bad thing about Robin in the last few seasons is that he has been injured.

"Hopefully, he looks more settled now and, if he can have a strong season with no injuries, he will be the perfect leader. I am convinced about that. He is world-class."

Wenger certainly needs something to lift his side after one of the toughest weeks in his 15-year Arsenal career.

The controversy over a UEFA ban and possible further censure for allegedly communicating from the stand against Udinese in midweek only add to his continuing troubles at the start of the new campaign.

Samir Nasri is expected to complete his move to Manchester City very shortly, just days after the departure of Fabregas.

And last weekend's Premier League opener at Newcastle saw striker Gervinho sent off and Alex Song charged by the FA for stamping. Both start three-match bans today.

Wenger added: "We have, of course, lost big players but numbers-wise we should be capable of doing well. If we find quality, we will add quality to our squad. We work very hard on it.

"The main thing is we have not found the quality.

"Why do the big clubs come to take our players, who are young?

"Because they looked everywhere else and did not find anyone.

"I believe I have shown in my 15 years here I can make the right decision for the right players.

"In the last 15 years you have seen more world-class players here, or as many as anywhere else in the world. You have to trust my judgment."

Injuries and that lack of new faces mean rookie right-back Carl Jenkinson, who just eight months ago was playing non-league football, is set to get his first Prem start against Liverpool today in an unfamiliar left-back role.

It only serves to highlight Wenger's lack of big-name signings this summer compared to Liverpool, who since January have spent £100m under Kenny Dalglish.

Whatever the turmoil facing him, though, Wenger insisted it would not force him to walk away from the club.

Earlier this week, former club chief David Dein claimed the Frenchman may have had enough.

Yet Wenger, 61, insisted: "We have had some bad news this week but, overall, I feel on the performance side it has not been the worst start to the season.

"David is not right. I will one day prove to you my loyalty by showing what I have turned down to stay here. You will be surprised. You can question my decisions but not my loyalty to this club."

Wenger was also adamant that Nasri will be in the squad for today's Emirates showdown.

He insisted: "If I decide to play him, then he will play."

Roberto Mancini has said he hopes to complete the £23m signing of Arsenal's Samir Nasri within days.

Speaking after Manchester City beat Bolton 3-2, Mancini also said the deal may not be his club's last buy before the transfer window closes on 31 August.

On Nasri he said: "I hope we can have the player in the next days.

"I don't know what's the problem. I hope this week we can have Nasri, but don't know when."

Asked if Nasri would be the last signing before the transfer window shuts, he said: "I hope not," but gave no details on the identity of other potential targets.

Earlier on Sunday Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told French media outlet TF1 the Nasri deal was "far, far, far from being done".

"He is happy here", Wenger told the television station. "There is no departure of Nasri at the moment."

On Saturday BBC Sport revealed the Nasri move to Manchester City was still alive - despite a hold-up that saw him play in Arsenal's home defeat against Liverpool on Saturday.

It is believed the framework of a deal is in place between City and Arsenal, as are Nasri's personal terms, but other financial details remain to be ironed out before the switch can be finalised.

Nasri's surprise appearance came as reports in France claimed the transfer had broken down and the midfielder was set to stay at Emirates Stadium for the rest of the season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger selected Nasri, 24, as the Gunners lost 2-0 to Liverpool, where his lively performance was well-received by the fans.

Afterwards, Wenger admitted he had not decided whether to pick him in Wednesday's Champions League qualifier second leg against Udinese in Italy.

If Nasri plays it would make him ineligible for City's Champions League campaign, a significant factor in manager Roberto Mancini's desire to add him to his squad alongside recent £38m purchase Sergio Aguero.

Emmanuel Adebayor, meanwhile, is still on course to complete his loan move from City to Tottenham before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

Dialogue continues between the two clubs about the structure of the deal, but it is fully expected to go through.
