The fantastic mentality of the Arsenal players since the start of the season is the main reason why supporters should be very proud of their team, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

Asked why the fans feel let down after a disappointing March, the Frenchman replied by saying that the huge hope was created because the team was still competing in all competitions and how that shows that there is the right fighting spirit in the side.

On what the Gunners achieved this season, the Arsenal boss declared that nobody expected Arsenal to be where they are today and how therefore their position shows that they did fight “beyond expectation from everybody”.

Wenger concluded by asking the fans to be behind their team until the very last second of the Premier League as that is what the players need to go on and win all five remaining games and hopefully be crowned Champions at the end of the season.

On Friday, Wenger said:

The Arsenal supporters can be very proud of their team because of the experience I have, this team has absolutely turned up with a fantastic mentality since the start of the season.

We created a huge hope because we were fighting on all fronts so the first quality the Club wants to have is a fighting spirit.

Secondly that we did fight beyond expectation from everybody. If I listen to the expectation at the start of the season nobody expected us to be where we are.

I would like sometimes, you, as well to acknowledge that and thirdly, what I would like from our fans is to be behind the team until the last day, the last minute, of the season.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said that he doesn’t plan on spending big this summer.

This certainly won’t be what Gunners fans are hoping to hear but it’s typical of Wenger.

Arsenal are believed to have £40 million in the transfer kitty but it seems that yet again Arsene Wenger is reluctant to spend it.

The Frenchman told the clubs official website: “Is [that] available? Frankly I don’t know,” He remarked about the supposed transfer kitty.

He continued:

“We have not completely checked out our financial position. The only thing I can say is that the club is in a healthy financial situation and, if needed, we can make a big transfer.”

Finances

The clubs financial position should be secure considering that Arsene Wenger has hardly spent a penny in recent transfer windows. The move to the Emirates Stadium must have been paid for by now through sponsorship and naming rights so why is Wenger so reluctant to spend money to improve his squad?

I think he must feel like he is neglecting his philosophy of bringing through young players if he spends money on new additions. He must understand though that there can be a happy median between the two.

Obvious

It seems obvious to every Arsenal fan and football fan in general were the problem lies with Arsenal. They need a world-class centre-back and goalkeeper but I don’t understand how Arsene Wenger can’t see this.

I don’t want to question one of the greatest managers the Premier League has ever seen but he seems to have blinkers on when it comes to were his side’s weaknesses lie. Even great men can make mistakes and Wenger’s seems to be his inability to adapt.

Arsenal are following a familiar pattern this season. Look like challengers for the Premier League title for most of the season and then fade when the going gets though. It’s a pattern that Arsenal fans must be frustrated with by now.

Arsenal are just a few players away from being really challengers again and it won’t take too many new faces to make them into serious contenders.

They have shown at times this season that they can perform on the big stage but then other times they have lost games because of silly mistakes at back. Arsenal fans must be tearing their hair out.

Keeper

I really do rated young Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny highly but I don’t think he’s ready to number one at such a big club just yet. Maybe if Arsenal brought in a more experienced keeper in the summer to be number one and help the 20 year-old to develop into the top keeper he promises to be.

The other keepers at the club are just not reliable enough. Lukasz Fabianski sometimes looks like he’s the answer but then makes a high profile errors and Spaniard Manuel Almunia is frustratingly inconsistent.

Centre-back

Then there is the centre-back position. Without Thomas Vermaelen the Gunners have looked vulnerable at the back. Wenger tried to solve his defensive problems by signing French defender Sebastian Squillaci but the Frenchman hasn’t looked good enough.

His compatriot Laurent Koscielny has made a decent start to his Gunners career but I don’t believe he is the answer to Arsenal’s problems either. Wenger needs to go out and sign a solid vocal centre-back to partner Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen next season.

Fortune

Arsene Wenger has been the king of the bargain in past seasons so he knows that he won’t necessarily have to spend a fortune. However with a reported £40million transfer kitty he could eradicate Arsenal’s weaknesses.

Unfortunately for Arsenal fans Arsene Wenger seems to have a weakness for not being able identify the right targets when it comes to his backline. And if Wenger continues to be stubborn then Arsenal are going to carry on being trophy less for a long time to come.
