ARSENE WENGER last night warned Fabio Capello he could wreck England’s chances at Euro 2012 if Jack Wilshere plays on this summer.


Capello has dubbed Jack Wilshere the future of England.

And he is supporting Stuart Pearce, who plans to pick him for the Under-21 European Champion- ships this summer.

Wilshere, 19, is set to make his 45th appearance of the season for club and country against Blackburn today.

That figure could hit 59 by June 25 if England’s youngsters reach the final in Denmark.

And Wenger insists it is just too much work to heap on the legs of the brilliant young midfielder.

He said: “You prepare for a European Championship a year before, you do not prepare in May or in June before the competition.

"I've met players at World Cups who have played more than 60 games in a season and before the World Cup started and they said to me: 'Boss, I'm dead'.

"France were European and world champions like Spain and in the season 2001-02, they went off to Australia, they went to Chile and they went out of the World Cup in 2002 in the first round without scoring a goal.

“They had the best goalscorer in England (Thierry Henry), the best in Italy (David Trezeguet) and the best in France (Djibril Cisse).

“Jack looks to be a promising player for the first national team and for Arsenal, so the interest of the FA and Arsenal is to give him the right protection.

“At the end of the day, what is important is that England and Arsenal have a good player, and the player has the rest needed to produce good performances.”

Wenger refused to attack Capello or Under-21 boss Pearce directly. But he did make a veiled dig at Pearce.

He aims to select Wilshere and Liverpool’s Andy Carroll, despite his debut goal for the senior side against Ghana at Wembley on Tuesday.

He added: “Use common sense, otherwise, if England want to do well in the Under-21s tournament, they can say ‘we take our best players and we do not consider what happened before’.

“Then you say ‘we want to go for national pride and ego’. Then it is defendable.

But that is not basically why the youth teams have been created. The target is to get players ready to play in the first team.”

Wenger has had problems with the FA and Under-21 events before, when winger Theo Walcott stepped down from the first team, after playing in two World Cup qualifiers, to join the Under-21s in Sweden.

But he was hauled off at half-time in the first match and dropped for the second.

“When you come from the first team, you go to the Under-21s and it’s difficult,” said Wenger.

Wenger was upset at Capello for playing Wilshere from the start against Wales a week ago and also in the friendly with Ghana on Tuesday.

Only Aston Villa’s Ashley Young was similarly selected. “

A lot happened last week that defied common sense but I do not want to talk about that,” added Wenger.

Arsenal star Theo Walcott is convinced his side can overturn a five point gap on leaders Manchester United in order to win the Premier League.

The winger said: “I think this year we’ve got that experience that any failures from the past won’t happen again.

“We need to win the Premier League.

“There is a confidence in the camp – and I believe we will be champions, I really do believe it.

“I’m very confident, you’ve got to be.

“If you’re not confident, then there’s something wrong completely.”

Walcott has been indispensable for Arsenal this season, scoring seven goals in 19 league appearances.
