Aaron Ramsey has blasted Kevin Ratcliffe after the former Wales skipper questioned whether the Arsenal midfielder was ready to take on the role as national team captain.

Ramsey, 20, will become Wales’ youngest skipper when he leads out the side against England in Cardiff.

Ratcliffe, now a respected commentator on Welsh football, had criticised the decision to promote the country’s star player.



However, despite being regarded as a somewhat shy and introverted individual, Ramsey brushed aside suggestions that he had been promoted ahead of his time with a confident show yesterday.

‘I don’t think I am too young,’ he said. ‘I have played about 50 appearances for one of the biggest clubs in the world and I played at a high level already in my career.

‘I know I am not a screamer and a shouter and I won’t change the way I am, but it is not just me.

‘It is about the other players as well, playing and working as a team.

‘Obviously some people will disagree with the manager’s decision, but he has made it and, hopefully, I can prove it correct.’

Ramsey also claimed he was ready to show that he has recovered fully from the horrific injury suffered in a challenge with Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross last February.

I’ve come back from a bad injury in the past year and I’ve had to be strong mentally to get through that,’ said Ramsey.

‘I couldn’t have done it without the support from my family and messages from the fans. I think I’ve grown up as well.

‘So this is a special moment for me. I’m honoured to be the captain of my country at such a young age. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a boy. When the manager asked me I snapped his hand off. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t have done.’

Wales boss Gary Speed sprang a major shock on Thursday when he asked Ramsey, at just 20 years and 90 days old, to become the new figurehead for football in the Principality.

Ratcliffe, who was capped 59 times by Wales, was mystified as to why Speed had not opted for Aston Villa’s James Collins or Ashley Williams of Swansea.

‘I would have thought that there were better options within the squad,’ said the Everton legend. ‘Someone like Ashley Williams or James Collins. I know all about Aaron’s qualities as a player, but is he a leader?

‘Gary’s obviously had a good look at it. Obviously, Aaron is going to be in the Wales squad for a long time, so the manager is looking to the future. That’s what Gary’s looking at. He’s looking at the next 10 years, not this game.’

Speed said he had left a phone message with Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp after Wales were criticised for their part in the hamstring injury that saw Gareth Bale sidelined, maintaining that there had been ‘a misunderstanding’.

The Wales boss also laughed off suggestions Ryan Giggs will fill in for the Spurs winger. ‘I’ve called him up and put him on standby, but he hasn’t brought his boots,’ said Speed before adding: ‘We have prepared as well as we could. This was our real first squad. Hopefully, we will see the benefits.’

"Конечно, если бы Яскелайнен спас "Болтон" в концовке шедшего параллельно матча против "Манчестер Юнайтед", то сейчас мы бы имели лучшие шансы на чемпионство, если смотреть математически. Однако прежде всего важно, что мы не проиграли. Команда имеет на своём счету длительную беспроигрышную серию, и продолжение её очень важно в психологическом плане. Об Андрее Аршавине...

"Аршавин забил великолепный гол "Вест Бромвичу". Он был исключителен. В последние 3-4 недели Андрей показывает свой лучший футбол. Мы знаем, что он - футболист с великолепным отношением к делу. Что временами вызывало сомнение у многих. Я очень счастлив за него. И за "Арсенал", конечно, ведь такой игрок всегда приносит пользу команде".

О психологическом состоянии Мануэля Альмунии после матча с "Вест Бромвичем"...

"Что тут можно сказать... Сам игрок в курсе, что принял неправильное решение в эпизоде со вторым голом. В больших играх это особенно придаёт боли. Да, матч с "Вест Бромвичем" был как раз из этой серии. Мануэль очень разочарован и переживает".

Об Йенсе Леманне...

"Он очень хорошо тренируется. Йенс сохранил приличную физическую форму, поскольку не отказался от своего обычного режима. Поэтому он может достаточно легко поглубиться в сам процесс непростого вратарского дела".

Поэтому  было важно не проиграть "Вест Бромвичу", чтобы не прервать успешную серию. Я уверен, что в конце сезона команда с наибольшей стабильностью будет вознаграждена. Будем надеяться на продолжение успешной серии и выигрыш нашей следующей встречи: сейчас это самое важное".

"Хорошо, когда много конкурентоспособных команд. Сейчас сложно дать прогноз (на матч "МЮ" - "Челси"), потому что всё может измениться в мгновение ока. О пользе перерыва в связи с матчами сборных...

"Может быть, это поможет футболистам. Придаст им новых сил после изнуряющего, энергозатратного месяца. 3 недели без клубного футбола... Наверное, неплохо то, что футболисты на время смогут сосредоточиться на несколько других вещах. Таким образом они вернутся вновь свежими и готовыми продолжать бой".

О матче квалификации к Евро-2012 Уэльс-Англия, который пройдёт в субботу...

"Обе команды страстно хотят победить. Жду этого матча с нетерпением. У нас есть игроки, которые могут быть задействованы с обеих сторон. Будет интересно посмотреть, как Англия совладает с огромным давлением.  Подопечные Капелло наверняка воодушевлены тем, что не сыграет Бэйл, лидер валлийцев. В плане качества состава Англия сейчас также превосходит Уэльс. Но матч пройдёт в Кардиффе. У сборной Уэльса есть хорошие молодые игроки. И им пригодится опыт для будущих побед".

There are some interesting stories going around at the moment that Arsene Wenger has found himself yet another bargain, and is arranging for the 19 year-old Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson to join Arsenal for free this summer. Although if its true there would be the usual compensaion for Charlton because of his age.

Jenkinson is an English right-back, but surprisingly has appeared for the Finland U19 team because of his mother! He had broken into the Charlton first team this year, and the Addicks tried very hard to get him to sign a contract extension, but to no avail.

The Charlton chairman Michael Slater said: “We’ve worked hard to convince Carl that he would be a key figure in Chris Powell’s plans going forward,”

“But regrettably Carl will not sign the contract and has indicated he wishes to leave the club at the end of the season.

“Having been with the club for 11 years and recently described his run of games in the first team as ‘a dream come true’, it is a real shame that he appears to have decided his future lies elsewhere.”

I don’t know why, but both the London Standard and Sky Sports are reporting that he has head his head turned by Arsenal, and his manager, Chris Powell is not happy that Jenkinson had changed his mind about a new contract.

“There has been a U-turn,” he said.

“It’s a real shame because he has been with us since he was nine and he’d played one first-team game before I came in. I’m extremely disappointed. It seems he has had some outside influence and been pressed not to sign.”

German defender Per Mertesacker has revealed he is keen on a move to the Premier League should the opportunity arise.

Mertesacker is currently plying his trade with Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen in a season where both he and Bremen have been short of form, with the defender commiting a number of costly mistakes.

However, he has remained key to Germany's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and has been linked with a move to Arsenal or Liverpool.

But the 26-year-old has revealed that although his mind is fully focused on trying to improve his form and making sure that the his current club are not relegated, he could be tempted with an 'attractive' move to England in the summer.

"England has been an issue for a few years now, but I cannot make a decision yet," he told Die Welt newspaper.

"Of course the Premier League is attractive, but right now there is only one issue for me and that is avoiding the drop."

England captain John Terry believes Jack Wilshere has all the attributes to lead his country one day.

Fabio Capello has already confirmed the Arsenal youngster will start Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales in Cardiff.

Wilshere has played just 52 minutes for England in friendly internationals - against Hungary and Denmark, but the Italian has backed the 19-year-old in a massive show of faith ahead of the crunch clash at the Millennium Stadium.

And, Terry has echoed those sentiments after watching Wilshere's performances for the Gunners this season.
Character

He said: "I sit across from Jack on the team bus and I've got to know him over

the last few months.

"As a person and a character, he can handle it with England. He handles himself well. He communicates well for such a young boy as well.

"He knows he deserves to be in this England side. Whether that's in the squad or the starting side, he knows he belongs here.

"I couldn't say that when I was his age, that I deserved to be here.

"I think we're seeing younger players coming into this set up and really believing and bringing a whole new mentality into the squad which I think is fantastic."

Qualities

Terry, 30, has been impressed with the way Wilshere has established himself at the Emirates and he believes the schemer has the potential to be one of his successors as skipper.

"Jack has definitely got the character and the qualities to be a future England captain," he added.

"He's someone who always works his socks off, tries hard, stays behind after

training, wants to learn and improve.

"That's the key thing. Some young players these days settle for playing every

week in the Premier League and getting their call-ups.

"They settle for that. He's a player who wants to work and improve on that."
