Sony’s unannounced PSP successor will launch in 2011, according to “multiple British sources”.

One told VG247 that the handheld is based on a powerful four-core Cell CPU (PS3 runs on an eight-core version) and that it’s expected to be revealed at Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show later this year. Contrary to one report last week, it’s “99 per cent” certain it isn’t being lined up for an E3 unveiling next month.

PSP2 non-disclosure agreements have apparently been in place at publishers and developers for months, with games already being made for “finished units” in the UK.

The system is said to feature a touch-screen but also retain the physical PlayStation buttons.

One source told the site that they would be “amazed” if the device supported any kind of physical media, noting that it “could” be 3G-enabled, as opposed to the Wi-Fi-only PSPgo.

Around the time of the UMD-free PSPgo’s announcement last summer Sony stressed that it intended to support “a shared strategy” between physical media and downloadable content.

Outside of Japan - where the system has consistently featured at the bottom of the weekly hardware sales rankings - PSPgo sales figures have been hard to come by, but the device is widely assumed to have underperformed, suggesting it could be a risk for Sony to shun physical media support again.

Developer talk on the Tokyo Game Show floor in September 2009 was of the handheld's next iteration, PSP-4000, which it was claimed would support Sony's proprietary UMD format upon launch in 2010.
