Chelsea saw a glimpse of Right To Play's initiatives taking place first hand today in a small suburb just outside Ghana's capital Accra.

Club representatives were on hand as a group of more than 100 children took part in a Right To Play physical education session on a playing field in the centre of a cluster of schools.
There the children took part in a number of games with Right To Play, which helped develop their mind, body and soul, allowing them to become valued members of their communities.



Children from each school combined into teams of four, which then moved around to take part in four different types of games, each set up to develop them as individuals.
Right To Play's main aim is to inspire children to learn through the enjoyment of sport, using games to motivate the local children into learning everyday skills as well as increasing concentration levels in the classroom.
One game involved simulating the effects of malaria. A 'mosquito' would go around tagging their friends, who would then pretend to be ill from the disease. They were saved when another friend passed a ball between their feet.
The game, like all the others, had a serious meaning, which became clear when the teacher sat all the children down after the fun.


They discussed how malaria could be avoided and what simple steps could be taken to prevent the disease, using the reflect, connect and apply method. You reflect on what you have just done, connect it with everyday life and apply what you have learned.
Head of physical education for all the schools Francis Ebo Turkson, who is also a Right To Play coordinator, explained the concept behind the games further: 'The activities are made up of white, red, blue and yellow balls. Each of these games are linked to the development of the child.

'If you look at the red ball it concentrates on the health of the child. The white balls are for their skills, when they use their hands and feet. The blue ball teaches them about peace and the yellow is for their emotions.

'It develops the child and helps maximise their attention for when they go back into the classroom, because all of their attention is needed to learn.

'Naturally, physical activity gets them moving and it helps them concentrate when they go back into the classroom but it also develops their mind, body and soul.



'The blue ball teaches them about everyday values, these values help them in the classroom and within their surrounding community, things such as compassion, team work and a lot of other things that will help them to do well in their communities.
'The things these children learn through play will stay with them forever,' added Turkson.
Once all the games had come to an end, the children lined up to collect some water and quench their thirst in the sweltering heat. While there, they were also handed a Chelsea t-shirt which they quickly donned with pride.

Chelsea's defensive problems have snowballed with news that Brazilian centre-half Alex will be sidelined for up to eight weeks with a knee injury. Alex has pulled out of Brazil's squad to play Argentina this week and is poised to have surgery which will rule him out for the period, the English champions stated on their website.

Chelsea's England defender John Terry missed the club's shock 3-0 home defeat by Sunderland on Sunday and could also be ruled out for months with a nerve problem in his leg.

"It has been manageable up until the last two weeks but it is at a point where I can't carry on with it," Terry said of his problem.

"I used to be able to make it through games because the adrenaline gets going and you blank the pain out, but now there really is no decision to make," he added.

"After games I am in agony and not sleeping at all. I used to play with pain at seven out of 10. Now? It's 10 out of 10. I need to take a few weeks rest, see a couple of specialists and solve the problem."
