If Barcelona Had Taken Their Chances Against Atletico Madrid, Lionel Messi Injury Would Not Have Happened - Johan Cruyff

Johan Cruyff has claimed that if Barcelona has been more clinical in front of goal during their 2-1 defeat of Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon, they could have prevented Lionel Messi leaving the pitch on a stretcher and thus missing two weeks of action.

Messi was taking the ball towards the corner to see out the victory before being met by a vicious tackle from Tomas Ujfalusi, who received a straight red card for his actions, which left the Argentine writhing in agony.

Speaking in his weekly column in El Periodico, the Camp Nou legend remarked that if the team had finished off the chances they had, the whole incident, which occurred in injury time, could have been avoided.

He stated: “Probably if we had closed the match with the many chances we had, Lionel Messi would not have gone off on a stretcher and would have avoided the ugly ankle injury from [Tomas] Ujfalusi.

“If Messi, [David] Villa or Pedro had been successful, or had not been stopped by [David] de Gea, Messi would not have left the stadium on crutches.”

Cruyff also took time to comment on the recent performances of Cristiano Ronaldo, who suffered a difficult week for los Blancos but it was his deflected effort that handed Jose Mourinho’s men a priceless win.

He added: “Against Ajax he [Ronaldo] did not play badly. I do not know whether or not it was anxiety.”

Congratulations, Andrés Iniesta

Several Spanish news sources announced today that FC Barcelona and Spanish international midfielder Andrés Iniesta (26) and his companion are expecting a child in the spring of 2011. The original source of the information was the blog ‘Diari de Girona’, and according to the report, the news was confirmed by Iniesta’s maternal grandfather, Andrés Luján. Unfortunately, it seems that the news was released publicly before the couple had wished it to be so.

Iniesta today made the following post on his Facebook page:

Hola a todos, acaba de publicarse mi futura paternidad. Tan solo quiero confirmar la noticia y deciros que es un momento lleno de felicidad para todos nosotros. Sin embargo estoy muy dolido por la manera tan fea que se ha publicado. Es un tema muy personal y las formas que se han utilizado para conseguir la noticia me decepcionan muchísimo. Espero que todos entendáis que mi pareja y yo no queremos tratar este tema, tan maravilloso para nosotros, publicamente, muchas gracias y un abrazo.

In English, it says:

Hi to all. My future fatherhood has just been made public. I just want to confirm the news and tell you all that it is a moment filled with happiness for us. However, I am very hurt that it was made public in such an ugly way. It is a very personal subject, and the means that were used to obtain the news disappoint me very much. I hope that all of you understand that my partner and I don’t want to deal with this subject, so marvelous for us, publicly. Many thanks and a hug.

It is a shame that media sources will pry so callously into the lives of the well known. Andrés and his companion deserve far better and should have had the priviledge of announcing the news when they were ready to do so. Still, we wish the couple the very best.
