Arsene Wenger considering 4-4-2 formation to accomodate van Persie-Chamakh partnership

One of the questions currently being asked by Arsenal fans is how strikers Robin van Persie and Marouane Chamakh will line-up for the Gunners in the offensive department.

With the Moroccan leading the Arsenal forward line for the last two games, he was shifted to the right after the introduction of the Dutchman against Blackpool last Saturday and many are wondering if he will indeed be used on the right when van Persie returns to full fitness and makes his comeback in Wenger’s regular eleven.

Speaking about the compatibility between the two, the Frenchman started by praising new-boy Chamakh, explaining how he played a major role in the 6-0 win over Blackpool even if he is still adapting to the style of the Gunners.

On how he intends to use the two strikers together, Wenger concluded by saying that the 4-4-2 formation is a possibility although he needs time before taking a final decision on such a tactical change. The Frenchman also said how he is very satisfied with the forward line, explaining how the options available to him are plenty.

He said:

I believe he is a player who adapts still to our style but if you look at the impact he has on the game; he got the penalty, he got the sending off, he got the goal and he was involved in the goal last week. He is an efficient player and he has still to adapt to our style. But I am very confident that when you see the header today his goals can be vital in big games.

They can play together but that will be a 4-4-2. We’ll see, it depends a little bit, one can play on the flank and come in, but at the moment we have plenty of choice going forward – touch wood.

Walcott - I'm happy to make Henry's switch

Theo Walcott believes he can still fulfil the destiny Arsène Wenger always planned for him - to play as a centre forward for Arsenal.

The 21-year-old showed his eye for goal on Saturday by netting a superb hat-trick in the 6-0 win over Blackpool at Emirates Stadium. That treble was scored from his usual position on the right wing. It is a role Walcott is still happy to play however Wenger has a legacy of moving the positions of his signings and the England international is open to change.

"The boss signed me as a striker but I'll happily play anywhere for Arsenal," he said.

"There's a lot of competition up front now with Marouane and Robin, so as long as I provide goals and pop up with one now and then I'm happy with that.

"But if the boss wants me to play up front I'm buzzing from that. I'm working in training up front so I'll go from there."

Wenger changed the positions of Emmanuel Petit, Freddie Ljungberg, Sylvain Wiltord and Gilles Grimandi during their time at Arsenal. However his most successful switch was Thierry Henry, who was predominantly a left-winger at Juventus but was always a centre forward in North London.

Walcott openly admits Henry is his hero. However it appears the former Southampton star will struggle to get tips off the New York Red Bulls striker if Wenger does make the same move.

"No, I have not spoken to him at all," said Walcott. "It's difficult to get hold of him and I'd probably have a massive phone bill as well because I'd bother him every single night! But I am sure he'll do very well out in the MLS."

Walcott - We won't get ahead of ourselves

Theo Walcott insists Arsenal will not get carried away despite scoring six goals against Blackpool on Saturday.

The striker claimed his first Gunners hat-trick in the match but is keeping himself firmly rooted to the ground. The 21-year-old says the most important thing now is to look ahead to next weekend's early kick-off at Blackburn Rovers.

"We won't get ahead of ourselves with this result," he said after the win over Blackpool.

"Everyone expected us to beat Blackpool, and fair play to them they came and played a bit of football at times and their fans were loud throughout the whole game, just like ours, so I think they'll do OK this season.

"We want to be winning these games and the most important thing is how we react to Blackburn next week, an early kick off.

"They are the games we need to be winning, the games that might have let us down last season so that's where we will show our character."

The striker is also encouraged by the return to match action of Cesc Fabregas, who made his first Arsenal appearance of the season as a second-half substitute on Saturday.

"He is starting to get fit now," said Walcott. "He's looking very good in training. He spots balls that nobody else does and it's nice to see him back out on the pitch and playing well.

"Jack Wilshere did fantastically well [against Blackpool], he had a good pre-season and he spots the ball as well. We have so many fantastic players and as long as we keep them all fit we are going to be very strong.

"The bench we had on Saturday was very strong. Obviously we lost Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Frimpong to injury - he had a very good pre-season.

"The most important thing is no injuries and I think we'll have a good season."
