Laurent Koscielny can't wait to experience English football first-hand after years of watching the Premier League from afar.

The French defender joined Arsenal from Lorient last month and made a good first impression when he partnered Thomas Vermaelen in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

Koscielny followed that start against AC Milan with a late substitute appearance against Celtic on Sunday - a team very much in the Premier League mould.

Arsenal's 3-2 win gave the 24-year-old a taste of what to expect when the 2010/11 campaign gets underway in under a fortnight. And like so many foreign imports, he is relishing the prospect of playing high-octane football in front of partisan crowds.

"In France I watched the Premier League a lot," said Koscielny. "It is a very physical league, with a fast and intense pace.

"I used to follow the Big Four of English football; Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. I love the atmosphere here with the supporters. Even when you lose, the supporters are always behind you to lift you and take you to a higher level."

The traditional Big Four was gatecrashed last season as Tottenham and Manchester City went head to head for the fourth Champions League spot with Arsenal's local rivals prevailing.

Koscielny expects both clubs to challenge once again although he doesn't think a title tilt for super-rich City is a foregone conclusion.

"Maybe, though I do not know if money solves all the problems," he said.

"A football team is made of 11 talented players; it is not only one good player that makes the team win the match. So I don't know if Manchester City can perform right at the top level, but maybe they can."

Ray Parlour says he is encouraged by what he has seen so far from new Arsenal signings Marouane Chamakh and Laurent Koscienly.

Parlour has had the chance to see a lot of Arsenal's new recruits during pre-season, and thinks they both share a strong work ethic, which will be useful to the team.

However, the former Arsenal midfielder believes Arsène Wenger could still do with adding a fourth central defender to his squad.

He said: "He [Koscienly] looks a great prospect and certainly has a certain hunger about him. He is perceptive in his reading of the game and acts quickly on what he sees unfolding in front of him, I have to say I have been very impressed.

"You've got Johan Djourou but the club definitely need another player in that position. You'd always say you need four strong central defenders. If it were down to me I'd like to see Phil Jagielka come to the club but I am not sure if that is going to happen."

On Chamakh, Parlour tipped the former Bordeaux striker to be a big hit it in the Premier League this season.

He said: "He seems to mean business up front on his own and you need the qualities that he possesses to make your way in the Premier League.

"I have been impressed with him and his speed of thought - and feet - and he has a great work ethic, is willing to make runs and is always keen to receive the ball. He can only get better to my mind."

Marouane Chamakh is perhaps still in the process of convincing Arsenal supporters of his worth but singling out Chelsea as the side he wants to beat above all others will do his popularity no harm.

The 26-year-old's former club Bordeaux were humbled 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in September 2008 on an awful night for the French side.

Arsenal's record against the Blues is in desperate need of a boost with only two wins from their last 17 matches, chiefly due to Didier Drogba's run of 12 goals in as many outings against the Gunners.

Chelsea and Manchester United have proved a class apart in recent seasons but Chamakh is desperate to put Carlo Ancelotti's side in their place — although he will have to wait until 3 October for the teams' first encounter in west London.
He said: “I would like to play against Chelsea again. When we went there with Bordeaux , we got hammered and it is a horrible memory.

“It was so bad that I wished the referee had stopped the match 15 minutes before the end. So I hope that this time I will beat them with Arsenal.”

Chamakh's only other trip to England prior to his free transfer to Emirates Stadium this summer came at Liverpool, again with Bordeaux, in October 2006.

Luis Garcia scored twice as Anfield witnessed a comfortable 3-0 home win but the passionate support Chamakh encountered that night swelled his desire to move to England.

“I used to watch all the big Premier League games on TV in France with the amazing fans in great stadiums, with great goals and great players, and I used to think I want to play there one day',” said the Morocco international.

“And then I played against Chelsea and Liverpool with Bordeaux in the Champions League and those two experiences were unbelievable. Despite the two defeats, I loved the way the fans supported their team. I love the rhythm of the game. For a player, there is nothing better than England. This is a real football country with love and passion for the game and the clubs.

“I guess with my height and my qualities in the air, playing in England was always the best choice for me. I have always dreamt of playing in this league.

“I know that I still have a lot of hard work to do to perform well in the Premier League but I am very motivated and hungry to do well. There is still a lot of room for improvement in my game.”

Chamakh, who was born and raised in France, is taking English lessons but has the benefit of a strong French contingent already at the club.

Manager Arsene Wenger always insists players speak English in the dressing room but during the close season, Chamakh has been helped to settle by his fellow natives.

“Samir Nasri, who is a good friend, took me under his wing a bit and made it very easy for me,” added Chamakh.

“It was really good to have him with me and I spent a lot of time at his house watching the World Cup. I am an easy going guy and I knew there wouldn't be any problem integrating within this group.”

Arsenal continue their pre-season preparations with a trip to Legia Warsaw on Saturday.
