Cesc Fabregas has moved to quash fears of him forcing a possible move to Spanish club Barcelona by issuing the strongest, yet diplomatic, statement yet.

The World Cup winner is the subject of transfer bid by the Catalan club, who have had a €30 million bid turned down by Arsenal.

Manager Arsène Wenger has also stated several times that the club were not interested in negotiating for Fabregas, saying that the midfielder is a part of the club's long-term success.

Fabregas himself has conceded that he is of course a Catalan born and bred, but he's proud of his role in Arsenal and takes his responsibilities very strongly.

Speaking to DIR Emotions magazine, the 23-year-old said: "I'm a Barca fan, I'm a socio, as is my grandfather, my uncle, my cousin... I have felt the colours from a young age, I'm Catalan.

"However, I'm the captain of Arsenal, I'm a 'Gunner', and I have become a player there and matured as a person."

Fabregas also paid tribute to Wenger, saying that the bond between the both of them was very close, and admitted that the two had a very emotional conversation when discussing his long-term future at the club.

He added: "Arsène is a second father for me, the most important person in my life after my father. He has behaved really well with me and taken me in like a son. I am part of his family.

"He doesn't want me to leave. And in my last conversation with him in London, it was one of the most difficult moments I have experienced. I ended up very upset."

Mark Schwarzer remains determined to quit Fulham for Arsenal despite the appointment of Mark Hughes as manager at Craven Cottage.

Hughes' appointment on a two-year deal was confirmed by Fulham on Thursday and the former Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City manager will be in the stands to watch his new side take on Portsmouth on Saturday before being officially unveiled on Tuesday.





Hughes will earn £2million a year before performance - related bonuses and has been allowed to bring in his coaching team of Mark Bowen, Eddie Niedzwiecki and Kevin Hitchcock.

Fulham's caretaker manager, Ray Lewington, will stay at the club in a coaching capacity.

But despite the arrival of the new managerial team, Schwarzer, 37, has his heart set on bringing down the curtain down on his career at Arsenal meaning Hughes must decide whether to sanction a deal to sign West Ham keeper Robert Green.

Fulham have already rejected a £2million offer from Arsenal for Schwarzer who they value at double that amount.

A compromise deal is likely to be struck, however, and Hughes must decide whether to use that cash and a slice of his £20m transfer kitty to land Green who is valued in the £6m bracket by West Ham despite his howler for England in the World Cup.

Hughes must also decide whether to finalise a £2m deal for Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell which has been on the back burner for several weeks as Fulham sought a replacement for Roy Hodgson.

Arsène Wenger is considering “plenty of names” as he bids to bring in another centre back before the start of the season.

Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre have departed since May with the manager adding only Laurent Koscielny from Lorient. Johan Djourou has returned after sitting out almost the entire 2009/10 campaign with injury. But, with Thomas Vermaelen, that makes only three established, experienced centre backs on the books.

Wenger admits that last season he needed five central defenders so he is looking to add one more at least before the transfer window shuts. But, for now, the Frenchman is remaining tight-lipped as to his targets.

"I wouldn’t like to give you any names,” he said. “There are plenty of names that we consider and we analyse. We look at the financial possibilities and the technical potential. But it is impossible for me to come out with a name.

"We are still on the search because at the moment we only have three centre backs and we have seen last season you needed five. I believe we need at least four because we have some other players who can fill in this position but overall we are still on the search."

The Catalan giants had already failed with a €35 million offer for their academy graduate earlier this summer and had conveyed the message, via club officials or players, that they believed the deal for Fabregas would be done.

However, Barca's bullish approach to the Fabregas deal under former president Joan Laporta was not viewed favourably by Arsenal with his successor, Sandro Rosell, trying to adopt a more conciliatory tone.

And the new president, Rosell, recently admitted that a deal may be unlikely this summer, even if he remains convinced Fabregas will join the club within 12 months.

The Catalan press reported on Friday that Fabregas will again inform Wenger of his desire to leave, having returned to London following a holiday in Greece, but Bartomeu has suggested that with Arsenal still refusing to negotiate, Barca do not expect a transfer to happen before the close of the summer transfer window.

"Both [sporting director] Andoni Zubizarreta and coach Pep Guardiola want Fabregas, but it is very difficult to return to an improved relationship with Arsenal," Bartomeu told Sport.

"We talked to the club and they told us that Fabregas was non-transferable. And there are no imminent negotiations in place because they do not want to sell.

"We would like very much that the relationship between Fabregas and his manager, Arsene Wenger, return to normal. And we respect Arsenal's decision not to sell."

Barcelona have confirmed there is no dialogue between themselves and Arsenal regarding the transfer of Cesc Fabregas.


The Catalan giants have been chasing the Arsenal captain all summer without success so far and sporting vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed they are not in discusssions with the Gunners over any possible deal.

Arsène Wenger fully intends to keep hold of Cesc Fabregas this year - and for years to come.

There has been a consistent stream of stories surrounding the sale of Arsenal's captain to Barcelona this summer, even though the Club issued a firm statement last month reiterating that Fabregas is not for sale.

The "transfer noise" - as Wenger describes it - refuses to die down with some reports suggesting that even if Fabregas stayed at Emirates Stadium this season, he would rejoin Barcelona next summer.

Wenger thinks otherwise and sees no reason why Fabregas will not be an Arsenal player beyond 2011.

"Look at the length of his contract and you will see he has five or six years to go," said the Frenchman.

"When you sign a contract it means we are committed to a player to pay him and keep him no matter what happens."

Arsène Wenger wants Cesc Fabregas to put the summer’s speculation behind him and show he is a “champion”.

The Spanish midfielder has been linked with a return to Barcelona throughout the close season. In May, Arsenal put out a strongly-worded statement spelling out their desire to keep their captain. Wenger has backed up that sentiment in numerous press conferences since then.

With Fabregas close to a return after the rigours of a wonderful World Cup, the manager was looking for the 23-year-old to concentrate on Club matters once again.

“It's an inevitable question and inevitable answer,” said Wenger at Friday’s press conference for the Emirates Cup.

“I always said Cesc Fabregas will be our captain next year and that we want to keep him. Despite all the speculation last season and the whole summer, nothing has changed.

"There's a great attitude and spirit inside the squad and Cesc Fabregas can help us achieve these targets. He's now at a good age, 23-years-old, and he has just won the World Cup. I believe he will grow in authority again for next season. The biggest achievement for him now is to help us win the title.

"I have known players who want to leave and then after they don't want to leave any more. There are all kinds of situations but I believe what happens after is that when a player stays it is about how much he focused on playing football.

"It is always in the interests of the player to perform. If he is a champion, he goes on the football pitch and wants to be the best he can. All the rest is a poor excuse for a football player.”

Arsène Wenger is expecting a congested race for the Premier League title.

Chelsea were crowned champions in May but they were pushed all the way by Manchester United while Arsenal sustained their own challenge until the final weeks of the season.

A three-horse race made last term a captivating one and Wenger expects even more challengers to emerge when the 2010/11 campaign gets underway.

"I feel there will be more teams fighting for the title," he said.

"It makes it more interesting and open as well - we have seen the start of that last season as well, all of the top teams lost points against the second part of the Premier League.

"That trend could even become stronger this year.

"There are the three who dominated last year, then you have Spurs, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa - I hope I do not forget anybody - and you also have one team who is a surprise at the start of the season."

Arsène Wenger says he already has an idea of who will line up for Arsenal against Liverpool on August 15.

The Gunners get their Premier League campaign underway at Anfield in two weeks time and the manager has already explained that he is searching for a new defender. He is also yet to decide who his No 1 will be this season.

But despite that the Frenchman already has an idea of how Arsenal will start on Merseyside.

"It's open," he told Friday's press conference. "I will pick the team with maybe 48 hours to go. But I have an idea already.

"We have a good opportunity to see them [the keepers] tomorrow. The Premier League starts on the 14th of August so we have a little bit more time."

The manager also re-iterated that he is on the lookout for new players. But having completed two transfers early in the transfer window, Wenger is now anticipating some late deals.

"At the moment we are still looking outside to strengthen the squad," he said. "If we find the right players we will do it. In what position I cannot tell you.

"We have signed Chamakh and Koscielny already. There are always two periods in the transfer window - very early and very late.

"I always did [business] very early. And I always did it very late.

"The transfer market overall is very quiet. Clubs are very tight with money."
