Catalan new site El Mundo Deportivo presented some facts that will come as no surprise to fans of FC Barcelona: the players raised in the bluagrana cantera have scored 93 of the 131 goals marked by the team. Or, in other words, the players of La Masia have scored 71% of the goals to date this season.

Led by Leo Messi, the top goal scorer of La Liga with 31 goals and author of 44 tallies in all, a total of 10 home-grown players have scored this season: in addition to the Argentine, Carles Puyol, Pedro Rodríguez, Xavi Hernández, Bojan Krkic, Andrés Iniesta, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, Jeffren Suárez and Thiago Alcántara.

The great revelation of the cantera has been the explosion of Pedro, the only player who has scored in six different competitions in a single season; he has achieved 10 goals in the league, 4 in the Champions League, 3 in la Copa del Rey, one in the Spanish Super Cup, one in the European Super Cup, and two in the Club World Cup.

Despite not occupying the spot of a forward, Puyol (1 goal in the league), Piqué (2 in the league and 2 in the Champions League) and Busquets (1 goal in the Club World Cup) have added to the list of goal scorers.

Jeffren and Thiago, for their part, scored for first time this year: the player of Venezuelan origin from the Canary Islands has scored two goals in the league and Thiago, one. The percentage of goals from La Masia has grown spectacularly with respect to last year, when the home-grown players scored 70 of the 158 (or 44%).

FC Barcelona players will see a familiar face on the pitch for Saturday’s crucial clash with Sevilla at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Although Mallenco is an unquestionably qualified referee, our recent experience with him suggests that we will get no favors during the match. And given the mild controversy his performance in Barcelona elicited just weeks ago, one has to wonder why he has been selected to referee the team again so soon at such a crucial juncture in the season.

After the match, which ended in a scoreless draw, Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez noted that Mallenco “had, at every moment, ruled in favor of the team that did not come to play football.”

Elsewhere in Spain, referee Muñiz Fernández has been selected to oversee the match pitting Real Madrid against Athletic Bilbao which will play out in the Bernabéu stadium in Madrid on Saturday. According to Catalan publication Sport, Real Madrid has never lost a home contest with Fernández on the pitch.
