Arsenal vs Man City preview: Welcome back Patrick and Kolo, plus favourite line-up

Four former Gunners facing their old team in what promises to be an intense afternoon at the Emirates tomorrow.

Seeing Patrick Vieira and Kolo Toure in different colours has always been a strange feeling and I hope they will be given a warm welcome when they step onto the pitch tomorrow. The same will probably not happen for Emmanuel Adebayor. You know, I always base my conclusions on facts, on what I see, and what I saw when we played them away from home was disgusting to see.

Now granted, I don’t know what happened in the background, whether he was really driven out of Arsenal by Arsene Wenger as he said, but for what he did in September, kicking his old team mates and celebrating the way he did, he deserves no respect.

As for the other two, I will never forget them. Going back to what we were discussing earlier this week, the hunger and the winning mentality, Patrick and Kolo were two who would have killed for the Arsenal jersey, especially the Frenchman and especially against Roy Keane’s Manchester United. Who can forget the fights between those two?

And let’s not forget Sylvinho, of course. Even if he cannot be placed on the same level of the other two in terms of how much he spent with the Gunners and how much he gave to the red and white colours, he could feature and that could mean 25% of City’s starting eleven made up of former Arsenal players. Bizarre isn’t it?

  Manchester City

They simple cannot afford a defeat. After scoring six against Burnley, three against Wigan and five against Birmingham, they were stopped by Scholes’ late winner last week so they will try to bounce back in order to keep their fourth place dream alive.

Johnson, Petrov and Lescott are all set to miss out for Roberto Mancini’s side but Micah Richards is back after missing the last four games through a knee injury.

  Favourite line-up

According to Arsene Wenger, Lukasz Fabianski will be a top class goalkeeper one day. The problem is of course that there are games to be played today before the “one day” comes and that will certainly not be tomorrow. Meaning, that we desperately have to go out there with someone who is not low in confidence.

Mannone
Sagna – Campbell – Silvestre – Clichy
Eboue – Song – Diaby – Nasri
Bendtner – van Persie

Vito knows that with Wojciech Szczesny asking questions about a possible return, his future at Arsenal may be uncertain, reason why he would be determined to impress if called to start. Alex Song should be back in midfield and hopefully, Robin van Persie is fit enough to start from the first minute.

  Pre-match Interviews

Speaking on Emmanuel Adebayor, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger asked fans to behave and keep the club’s line of conduct. The Frenchman explained that what happened months ago is history now and everyone should focus on supporting the home team.

He explained:

Quote:

We want to keep our line of conduct. No matter what happened in the first game, it is important that we have a positive attitude and encourage our players.

More than ever we will need the crowd to be behind us tomorrow and let’s focus on that. I expect everybody to behave well.

Funnily enough, Roberto Mancini said the same exact words, only that they were targeted towards the Togo man. The Italian, who was not in charge of Manchester City when that happened, explained how the striker should focus on his team, adding how last September’s celebrations were a “mistake”.

He said:

Quote:

I remember the game against Arsenal. I watched it on TV. I don’t know why it happened but in that first game Emmanuel made a mistake.

On Saturday it is important that he only concentrates on City because Emmanuel is important to us when he is doing that. If he scores again I will be happy but it is important we don’t have another situation like the first one.

  E probabil si un alt line-up :

Fabianski
Sagna – Campbell – Silvestre – Clichy
Nasri – Song – Diaby

Toure – I left Arsenal because of Gallas, It was him or me!

The Man City defender Kolo Toure today admitted that his personal relationship with his defensive partner William Gallas was the reason that he had to leave Arsenal last summer.

He revealed that the things were so bad that one of them had to leave for the good of the team.

“I was at Arsenal for seven years and everything was fantastic,” he said. “But the last two years were difficult.

“I had a few problems with a few people there and wasn’t feeling happy. I was looking for somewhere else and a new challenge.

“Gallas and me misunderstood each other at certain times and one of us had to leave. As a player I had great respect for him because he was older than me.

“In Africa, when someone is older you have respect for them, but I think sometimes he took advantage of that in some ways.”

“That was it,” said Toure. “I think Arsene understood that one of us had to go. I didn’t want to make any trouble for Arsenal because I’d had a really good time there and they gave me my chance.

“There was no problem with Arsene and me. I have huge respect for him. But me and Gallas? We didn’t talk to each other at all.

“It really came down to me, because I didn’t want to leave the team in a difficult position and I was the one who said I wanted to go.”

Gallas won’t be on the field to face his former team-mate today, but Robin Van Persie will be up against Emmanuel Adebayor, who he called “mindless and malicious” after their last meeting when Adebayor was caught on camera stamping on his former strike-partner.

The Dutchman will be making his first start for five months today, and Arsene Wenger admitted that he will be asking Van Persie to put it out of his mind.

“Yes, Robin was upset,” Wenger said. “And rightly so. I will have a word with him, but he is ready to start and wants to start. I will tell him to just focus on the game.”

All in all, it seems that there is a fascinating match in prospect today.

WENGER: VIEIRA STILL A LEGEND

Arsene Wenger believes it was probably better Patrick Vieira did not come back to Arsenal - thus forever preserving his legendary status.

The veteran France midfielder, who turns 34 this summer, could face his old club in Saturday's late kick-off against Manchester City at Emirates Stadium.

Wenger has maintained a close relationship with his long-time captain and midfielder general, who left Highbury for Juventus during July 2005.

Indeed, it appeared as if Vieira was set for a return to his old club last summer when it was clear he was going to leave Inter Milan in search of regular first-team football.

Wenger, though, felt the move would have not been in the best interests of either club or player with the likes of Alex Song and Aaron Ramsey both already pressing for place in the side.

"I always had a chat with Patrick when he was available again," said Wenger.

"Arsenal was massive for him, but it was also important for him to play when he came back to England.

"In the end, I was not involved at all when he went to Manchester City. The signing was very quick."

Wenger added: "Of course I am always interested in Patrick, for me he was a special player here. We arrived here together and I respect hugely what he has done.

"He was a massive success with Arsenal, is a legend here and will always remain so. Maybe it is better like that."

Wenger, meanwhile, has called on Arsenal fans and players alike not to target Emmanuel Adebayor when the controversial former Gunners striker returns to Emirates Stadium for the first time.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is confident the £25million summer signing has learnt the lessons of past mistakes and will keep the focus purely on the football against his old club.

Adebayor was handed a three-match ban for raking his studs down the face of Arsenal forward Robin van Persie, who branded the incident "mindless and malicious", which followed an ill-advised goal celebration - which also lead to a suspended two-game sanction and £25,000 fine from the Football Association - when he raced the full length of the field to slide right in front of the Gunners' supporters during the clash at Eastlands back in September.

Wenger - who plucked the now retired Togo striker from relative obscurity at Monaco during January 2006 and helped turn him into one of the hottest properties in Europe - believes all that should be left in the past.

"We have always had the same line of conduct - to respect what they have done for us and we want our fans to respect that as well and encourage our team," Wenger said.

"No matter what happened in the first game, it is important that we have a positive attitude and encourage our players."

Arsenal's hopes of staying in the Barclays Premier League title race were thrown away during a ridiculous final 10 minutes at Wigan on Sunday, where they somehow allowed a 2-0 lead to slip as the home side fought back to win.

"It is important that we keep fighting, because you never know - and also we are as well under threat from the people chasing from behind," Wenger said. "Nothing is secure."

Nicklas Bendtner: Am I one of the best strikers in the world? Yes, and I'll prove it next season

Confident young man, Nicklas Bendtner. Confident enough to strip naked beside the wreckage of his car after careering off the A1. Confident enough to consider himself one of the finest strikers in the world.

Confident enough, at 22, to ask a 34-year-old member of the Danish royal family if she would care to join him on a date. Even confident enough to ask Eduardo if he would mind giving him Arsenal's No 9 shirt. The beautiful Baroness Caroline Luel-Brockdorff said yes, but Eduardo still wears No 9.

Bendtner was confident enough to replace that mangled Aston Martin with a brand-spanking new one. 'It's parked outside,' he says with a smile. 'It's my dream car and it's even more special to me now because it saved my life.'

But what was he doing taking off his clothes after climbing from the original £160,000 supercar back in September? 'The lads here do find that bit funny,' he says. 'But I needed to check myself. I could feel pain in my knee and in my stomach, from where I'd had an operation in the past.

'And I was obviously worried. My body is my livelihood and I was desperate to find out if I was OK. So I took off all my clothes, even my pants, picked up a wing mirror that had come off the car and checked myself over, front and back.'

Bendtner had only just got the pants back on when a man came scrambling down the bank to see if he needed help. 'He asked me if I was OK and I asked him to call an ambulance,' he recalls.

'Then I climbed back into the car to find my phone. First I called my dad, to tell him I'd had an accident but that I was OK. Then I rang the club to say I'd be late for training.'

The accident, which he says happened when he had to take evasive action to avoid hitting a car that had crossed into his lane, did leave him 'pretty shaken up'.

'I'm still suffering because of it,' he says. 'After a game my back stiffens so much I can barely walk, and I need a lot of treatment to help me recover quickly.

'It happened as I was coming off the A1 to turn on to the M25. Suddenly I'm pointing in the wrong direction and then I'm crashing through the barrier and into a load of trees. It was pretty scary but I was conscious the whole time and I just had this feeling I was going to be all right.'

He rejects the suggestion that, like so many young footballers these days, he might be too inexperienced a driver to own such a powerful car. He even rejects the idea that someone like Carlo Cudicini, the Tottenham goalkeeper now battling to save his career after a serious accident, should not be riding a motorbike.

'My dad raced go-karts and I think driving is just something that is in my genes,' he says. 'But motorbikes are great, too. Don't you think that in life you have to take risks? You can't save yourself for the next day.'

Bendtner is remarkably self-assured but not in a way that inspires dislike. On the contrary, he is actually rather engaging. In the same way that someone like Jose Mourinho is engaging. You could say he has that same special brand of arrogance, a desire to provoke a response. He has told journalists he hates 'boring' football questions, demanding that they think of something interesting to ask him.

At one stage during this interview the conversation diverts to the subject of black and white truffles and a certain restaurant in Barcelona. 'I'm surprised you managed to get white truffles at this time of year,' he declares. 'There are none left in London.'

Maybe he's just more mature than the average 22-year-old. 'I hear that a lot,' he says. But I still suggest that he might come across as overconfident, that he could easily be mistaken for someone who is far too cocksure. 'I do not believe I'm over-confident,' he says. 'I believe I have the confidence I need in my ability. And if you ask me I am going to tell you straight.

'You can ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you I'm always honest and that I appreciate honest people. I like people to be straight with me. I don't like people talking behind my back or anything like that.

'If you ask me if I am one of the best strikers in the world, I say yes because I believe it. When I see that other strikers score a lot of goals, I realise I need to score those goals. But I think everything else in my game is right. Even if I believe I can still improve. But the goals are the last thing I need to add and when I do I believe I will be the player I want to be. One of the best.'

He will prove as much, he says, next season. 'Remember, I spent a lot of time playing on the right wing here at Arsenal. Then I had my accident. But since I've been back, and I've been playing up front, I've started to find my balance.

'I'm sure it will be shown that I am one of the best. Because of the car accident I've also had groin problems that mean I'm not completely the player I should be. But after the World Cup I have a month to really focus on my rehabilitation and once I'm feeling fantastic in my body, I hope to play the way I want to. There is more to come from me.'

It might have been this attitude that grated with Emmanuel Adebayor, the former Arsenal striker with whom he clashed violently during a Carling Cup tie against Tottenham two years ago and someone he will encounter today when Manchester City travel to the Emirates.

So the subject of Adebayor is raised. 'What do you want to know about him? he says.

'Well, what was the problem?' I ask him.

'You don't get on with everyone you meet in football and he was one of them,' he says. 'It had nothing to do with both of us being strikers. And it didn't start when we had that argument on the pitch. It was like that from the beginning with him.

'I get on with all the other strikers fine. But some people you just don't get on with. I don't know what he thought about me. We never really spoke about it. But I don't have anything positive to say so I'd rather say nothing.'

Even after the last two games, Bendtner would argue that Arsenal have not suffered in Adebayor's absence. 'We've had loads of injuries but we are still in the title race,' he replies. 'I think that says it all.'

The only subject he appears reluctant to discuss is his scoring ability off the field. Or more precisely the one WAG who can claim to be worth a good deal more than her Premier League footballer boyfriend. The lovely Caroline was already a Danish royal but when she split from her banker husband, Rory Fleming, she reportedly received a pay-off somewhere in the region of £400million.

She met Bendtner when she had him on as a guest on a reality television show that was filmed while she renovated her castle. But this remains a fairytale in reverse: the working class boy from Copenhagen - his parents worked in various roles for Scandinavian Airlines - who has not quite married a princess but seems to be pretty close.

Bendtner says he won't discuss her but he struggles not to. 'I know nothing about the money (the £400m),' he says. 'Money is not an issue. If we had no money I would still be as happy with her. It's the same with everyone in my life. Money isn't important. All it does is get you things.

'It's fair to say my life has changed though. In the last year and a half I feel I've grown up a lot. I still have fun but I don't go out so much any more. Before I would go out quite a bit, do the things that all young guys do. But now I have found someone who is really special, who I love.'

In Denmark they are big news - their answer to Posh and Becks with a royal twist, and a couple who attract all the attention their status inevitably brings.

'I haven't been home yet with my girlfriend,' he says. 'But when it happens, probably after the World Cup, I'm sure things will kick off because that's the way it is. It goes with the territory I guess.

'When it first came out that we were together we had English and Danish photographers outside the house and outside the restaurants we went to. But it's only pictures. I can deal with that. It won't make me change the way I live my life. I will live exactly how I want to and if people disagree with how I live my life that's up to them. It doesn't really bother me.'

He says he does have the benefit of a strong family behind him, as well as a karate black belt for a younger brother. Bendtner would not mess with 18-year-old Jannick and it sounds like nobody else should either. 'I think we had a very normal upbringing in Copenhagen,' he says. 'We both received a lot of love and a lot of support for what we wanted to do. Jannick is now a second dan in karate and competing in tournaments. He's as tall as me and strong too.

'For me it was only ever football. I wasn't interested in school or homework. I started playing at four for my local club and by the time I was 16 I was here at Arsenal. And I came here because of the manager and because of the belief he gave me. I had a great year on loan at Birmingham City, too. It was an important part of my development.'

Arsene Wenger would appear to think he has developed well, and not just because he chose to sell Adebayor to City and keep the big blond Dane. He rewarded his progress with a lucrative contract, which brings us to another question. According to certain commentators, Bendtner switched his shirt number to 52, earning him the nickname B52, when he landed a new £52,000-a-week contract.

'Not true,' he says, laughing. 'If I was negotiating a contract why would I end up with 52? You'd have a round number like 50 or 55, or maybe more! It's actually a number I chose after sitting down with a girlfriend of mine - I should say a friend who's a girl (wise move) - and knocking a few ideas around. She had some ideas, I had some ideas, and we came up with 52. Which I think is fantastic even if the players say I'm back in the youth team.

'I reimbursed supporters who had bought shirts with my 26 number because it was early in the season when I made the change. But it was only after I asked Eduardo for the No 9 and he said no that I decided to do something different.'

That he sees nothing wrong in asking Eduardo in the first place somehow adds to his appeal.
