Ferguson insists he 'still trusts' Berbatov

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he still has confidence in Dimitar Berbatov despite leaving the striker on the bench for most of the game against Bayern Munich.

United, who were down to 10 men after 50 minutes of the Champions league tie, started with Wayne Rooney, who was just back from an ankle injury, in attack.

Ferguson only brought Berbatov on with 10 minutes left but insisted "I still trust him, he's a good player".

"When we got the man sent off there was no need to put a striker on," he added.

"All we were trying to do was go over the line in terms of defending."

United, who eventually lost the tie on away goals after Bayern fought back to make it 4-4 on aggregate, saw Rafael sent off five minutes into the second half on Wednesday night.

Berbatov has begun 20 Premier League games, scoring 12 goals, but has been a substitute for each of United's games in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Bulgarian, a £30m signing from Tottenham in September 2008, started the 2-1 defeat by Chelsea last weekend, but it was his first start against either of the other top-three sides.

"There is absolutely no reason why we should doubt that he is a good player," said Ferguson.

"Dimitar has done well in a lot of games recently but we prefer to play with one striker."

Newspaper reports have suggested that a possible deal to supplement United's attack with Valencia striker David Villa failed as United refused to meet the Spanish side's £35m valuation.

But Ferguson refused to confirm any discussions had taken place over the 28-year-old.

"There is conjecture about every good player," he said.

"I am sure by the end of the season there will be half a dozen more. I cannot confirm that speculation but most of it is not right."

A deal to sign 21-year-old Mexico forward Javier Hernandez for an undisclosed fee was announced on Thursday, and Ferguson conceded the age of a player was normally a major factor in deciding his purchases.

"We like doing these kind of deals where we can identify young talent. We have been good at that over the years," he said.

"There is the odd exception when we get a mature player, like Berbatov.

"When you sign a player for that kind of money you know there is not going to be a resale value if he stays with you for six years."

Rooney misses Ewood trip

Wayne Rooney will miss Sunday's trip to Blackburn Rovers, but should be back for the Manchester derby.

The striker made a miraculous recovery from minor ankle ligament damage to start Wednesday's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich, but aggravated the injury during United's defeat to the Germans.

He will now sit out the visit to Ewood Park on Sunday, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson expects him to be available for the trip to Eastlands on 17 April.

"I don't think it's as serious as we said when he got the injury the first time, but I think he'll be ready for the City game," he told press at his pre-match press briefing. "We've got more time to work on it, anyway. Other than that, everyone else is fit."

Following United's midweek exertions against Bayern, Sir Alex says he will freshen up his starting XI for the clash with Sam Allardyce's side.

"Given the nature of the game on Wednesday and the energy spent, we have to address the situation of freshness," he said.

"We've got a a squad to use - we have the likes of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville and we also have John O'Shea back now. He came on against Bayern and did 30 minutes' work - it's good to get him back because he's such a versatile player for us.

"Sam Allardyce's team is in fantastic form. Blackburn is always a difficult place to go and they have a good home record. Hopefully we can get the energy back in the team. If we do that we'll be all right."

RAFAEL was left in tears in the Old Trafford dressing room after his red card cost Manchester United their place in Europe.
The right-back, 19, was sent off in the 50th minute of Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie with Bayern Munich after getting two silly yellow cards.

Midfielder Darren Fletcher revealed: "He's disappointed. We've got to rally round him.

"He's got a bright future but has to learn from the situation. He's going to play a big part for United. He's a talented lad - it's harsh really."

United's manager and players were still blaming Bayern for the dismissal rather than Rafael himself.

Fletcher said: "He wasn't going to send him off. The Bayern players pressured the ref into sending him off. It was clear to see."
