he Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy is happy to face an Arsenal team that is tired and suffering from a long injury list, and believes that his team is in form and more than capable of causing a shock at the Emirates today.

McCarthy said: ‘We aren’t going down there with any other thoughts than we want to stop them beating us.

“I am pleased with the way we have been playing but nobody outside me, my team and the staff is expecting us to get anything at Arsenal.

“I want to go there and get something. I have got no interest in going there and just looking at the ground. We know Arsenal are one of the three teams that could win the league this season so it will be a hard game for us.

“But we have given hope to ourselves because of the way that we have been playing and I always travel full of hope, optimism and belief that we can get something.

“It is certainly better for us to be going there in the form we are in now, rather than us going there playing lousy and with Arsenal on top form and having everyone fit.

“We are also certainly more consistent than we were when we played Arsenal the first time. I think we have more experience and we are a better team after being involved in 32 Premier League games.

“It doesn’t mean to say we will get anything out of it because Arsenal are a terrific side and, if they play as well as they can, it will be a difficult afternoon.

“They have got a quality squad and I am sure that Mr Wenger will rotate it as he deems fit. They have great movement but we took a point off Everton last weekend, who I think are a top-four side, so we can do it.

“Perhaps Arsenal are feeling a bit tired and they have got a few injuries. But if you are looking at me for an outpouring of sympathy for Arsenal, don’t, because it won’t be forthcoming.

“They will be thinking they have got a good enough squad to take care of Wolves, that’s for sure. But we will play the same way we have been playing recently and see what happens.”

The Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin had to be taken off after half an hour of the Champions League tie against Barcelona, and then spent the rest of the game in the treatment room. He said the next morning that he feared that he had played his last game of the season, if the scan revealed the worst.

“I pulled my calf muscle and, it seems, tore it,” Arshavin said. “If the scan confirms the initial diagnosis, as seems most likely, I’ll be out for a long time. At best I’ll be back in three weeks, at worst I won’t play again this season at all.”

But his manager Arsene Wenger disputes Arshavin’s self-diagnosis, and thinks he will be back in just a couple of weeks.


“It’s a bit his character,” Wenger said yesterday. “He is a bit more pessimistic. He is sometimes like that – pessimistic in his statements. But on a daily basis he is a tough boy. He played with stitches, so I am not as pessimistic as he is.”

“He speaks his mind but he’s not a negative person.”

Perhaps we could also say that Wenger himself is a bit too much of an optimist, considering his record of bringing players back into the team too early!

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is clinging to the hope that he could yet play in the Champions League final.

The Gunners skipper suffered a broken leg in the 2-2 quarter-final, first-leg draw with Barcelona on Wednesday and was duly ruled out for the season by his club, who said the injury would mean Fabregas could not play for at least six weeks.

However, the Champions League final does not take place until May 22, almost two weeks after the end of Arsenal's domestic campaign, a fact which has given the Spanish star some hope.

Fabregas told The Sun: "My leg is broken - and I feel broken too.

"The penalty I scored against Barcelona could be my last act as an Arsenal player this season.

"But I have to cling to the hope that we can get through at the Nou Camp, win our semi-final and I might be fit for the Champions League final.

"That might be asking a lot, but it is my dream and what I pray for.''

Fabregas has admitted he does not know if his leg was broken in the game before the Barcelona clash when he was tackled by Craig Gardner in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham.

"Some people think I may have even broken the leg against Birmingham a week earlier - and, to be honest, I just don't know.

"Yes, it's exactly the same spot but I didn't go into the game against Barcelona thinking 'my leg's broken'.''
