Reds seek away goal

United must score in Munich. That’s the message from Sir Alex ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg in the Allianz Arena.

“Scoring away from home gives you a big advantage,” the Reds boss told reporters at Monday's pre-match press conference. “We must try to do that. When I came here with Aberdeen in ‘83 we drew 0-0 and everybody was delighted, apart from me. I just sensed the danger. Although we managed to go through, Bayern scored twice on our ground. So scoring [on Tuesday] is going to be important.”

Performing well away from home hasn’t been a problem in recent years. Indeed, it’s been almost three years and 16 games since Sir Alex’s men last lost on their European travels.

“Our record has been fantastic,” the boss conceded. “It’s an indication of the team’s maturity and their understanding of how to play in Europe.

“We’ve had some big challenges in those 16 games. A few years ago addressed the weaknesses in our game away from home and accepted that challenge.”

The manager has every reason to feel confident, but dismissed the notion that the Reds were overwhelming favourites to win the tie.

“I respect Bayern Munich and have a great admiration for them. You’re playing history. Teams with history have a certain pride and we have to contend with that tomorrow.

“I haven’t seen all Bayern’s games this season but I’ve watched a lot of video footage over the last two days. They’ve had one or two bad results recently but that doesn’t make them a bad team.

“The motivation of playing in a quarter-final with the first game at home will be strong for them. We’re not getting carried away or thinking for any moment that this will be easy: it won’t be.”
