Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United's Champions League second leg demolition of Italian side Milan was always likely after United's first leg victory.

United won 4-0 in the second leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday, after an entertaining 3-2 victory at San Siro. And Wenger believes it was the result in Milan that paved the way for the 7-2 aggregate victory.

"It was not a surprise," Wenger said on Thursday. "Last night's game was never in doubt after the first leg, which put Milan in a position where they had to chase, go on a big gamble in the second leg, and of course Manchester United punished them.

"The decider was in the first game. In the heads of Milan, it was already all over."

Arsenal enjoyed their own emphatic round of 16 victory, beating FC Porto 5-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday to progress to the quarter-finals.

And despite having been beaten twice by both United and Chelsea this season, Wenger wouldn't mind being drawn against either of them in the next round.

"We have not done well against Man United and Chelsea, so maybe it would not be too bad to play against them," he said.

"We would not be favourites and would have a good opportunity to do better."

In light of Real Madrid's defeat in the Champions League, speculation has begun over what additions will be made to the squad for next season. In a poll released by Marca of which player(s) Madridistas want to see at the Spanish capital, most readers responded with Valencia's David Silva as their favoured choice, with Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas as a close second.

Speculation has tied a number of players to the Santiago Bernabeu, as David Villa, Franck Ribery, Jesus Navas, and many more have been talked up by the Madrid press as potential candidates for Florentino Perez's next big summer spending spree. Surprisingly, at least for fans in the Spanish capital, Ribery and Villa were not seen as particularly desirable signings.
