Boss greets Vidic return

United's preparations for a tough trip to Goodison Park received a boost on Friday morning when Sir Alex Ferguson declared Nemanja Vidic fit to return.

The midweek win in Milan was the ninth consecutive game to be missed by the Serbian defender, but he could now restart his season against in-form Everton and Louis Saha - conquerors of Chelsea in their last home match.

"It's welcome news," said Sir Alex at his Friday lunch-time press conference. "He's trained very well in the last two weeks and is ready to come into the squad."

Vidic's availability will help compensate for the continued absence of Rio Ferdinand - Saturday's clash completes his four-match domestic ban, so the new England captain will be eligible for Tuesday's home game against West Ham and the Carling Cup final.

Nani is also still suspended, following his red card at Aston Villa, while Ryan Giggs is sidelined by the arm fracture he sustained in the same game.

However, the midfield ranks could be replenished by Anderson, after his hour-long appearance in the Reserves' 2-0 win over Everton last night (Thursday) and the boss has confirmed that Antonio Valencia will start after being giving breather in recent weeks.

"He’s done so well for us this season, but because we don’t know everything about him we decided we’d give him a bit of a break and fortunately Nani’s form gave us the opportunity to do that," explained Sir Alex.

"With Nani suspended on Saturday, Valencia will start. He’s come on [as a substitute] in the last couple of games against Villa and Milan and done exceptionally well and he’s ready to come back
in now."

The Reds have the opportunity to temporarily take over top spot from Chelsea (who travel to Wolves at 15:00 GMT) with a draw or a win at Goodison, but Sir Alex knows his side will need to be at their very best to overcome the Toffees.

"It’ll be a very difficult game," he insisted. "Everton’s win over Chelsea shows you the potential of their team. If we could get a result I think it would be a very important one for us.

"When you get into the second half of the season and you come up against the difficult sides you know that taking something from each match is going to be very important. That’s the way I view it on Saturday.

"We're in decent form now which is important," he added. "Losing the FA Cup tie to Leeds [in January] didn’t do us any good, but we got over it eventually and the form is where we want it to be.

"The players are playing with good confidence and commitment and are putting a lot into their football which is pleasing to see."
