There has been an interesting day regarding Arsenal transfer news, but to be honest, none of it sounds promising. The news that Sergio Canales father (and agent) met with Arsenal representatives is just about the only hope I have that there could be a good signing to come in the next couple of weeks.

The gossip that the Dinamo Zagreb striker Mario Mandzukic was being considered has been shot down by Wenger. When asked if there was any truth in the rumours he said simply: “No,”

“You will hear a few names until the end of the transfer window without there being any truth in it.”

Oh well, back to the drawing board!

The next rumour concerns the Dutchman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, currently at Milan, and he is being linked with Arsenal just because he is a striker and wants to move away until the end of the season.

Huntelaar said today: “I am thinking about leaving. When I spoke with the directors, they comforted me and told me that they have faith in me.

“That’s important for me because our national team boss has explained to me many times that you need to play a lot for your own club to then play for Holland.

“I would like to stay in an important league. so I can show that I am worthy of being a Milan player. I would like to go on loan and then return.”

Perhaps with Wenger’s striking problems he would consider the Dutch international as a short-term measure, but I seem to remember Wenger saying, not long ago, something like ‘He can’t move this season, he has already had a transfer’, or something like that anyway!

Phillipe Senderos is desperate to move, but didn’t seem too keen on a move to Celtic last night, when he said that he would rather wait and see if other offers materialised, but Arsene Wenger confirmed today that the Scottish giants were still an option for the Swiss defender. He said: “There is an interest from Celtic, yes. It may happen,” he said.

“We have Sol Campbell and we have four centre backs.

“Philippe needs to play. He has not played for a long time and he needs to if he wants to go to the World Cup.”

It sounds like Wenger can’t wait to get rid, but I doubt that Senderos will go to Celtic unless it is a last resource.

As for my conclusion about whether there is any truth in any of the rumours of players coming in, I will leave you with a quote from Wenger tonight, where he seems more interested in getting his injured players back than buying anyone. He said: “We are not close to signing anybody at the moment. We are so focused on every game, that we forget to speak about transfers,”.

“The other thing I must say as well, is that we have so many players out that we are more focused on asking, ‘when is he back, when is he back?’.

“It looks like any player we can get back is like a transfer because we have not seen some players like Walcott. They can be fresh for the second part of the season and give us a big push.”

If only the fans could just “forget to speak about transfers.” That doesn’t sound very positive does it?
