Edwin named top stopper

Edwin van der Sar was named UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year following his Champions League exploits last season, and Sir Alex Ferguson described the Dutchman's dedication to remaining at the top of the game as "absolutely unbelievable."

The veteran stopper, who kept seven clean sheets in Europe last term, fought off competition from Chelsea's Petr Cech and Barcelona's Victor Valdes to scoop the goalkeeper gong. He was presented with his award in Monaco prior to the draw for this season's group stages.

"The award couldn't have gone to a better professional," Sir Alex told ManUtd.com. "Edwin's dedication to football in the last few years has been absolutely unbelievable.

"It's an award that is thorougly deserved and I think everyone in football will applaud that."

Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic lost out to John Terry in the UEFA Club Defender of the Year category, while Lionel Messi pipped former Red Cristiano Ronaldo in the UEFA Club Forward of the Year nominations.

Hargreaves closer to returning

Only Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar will be absent for the Reds against Arsenal on Saturday, while United will be boosted by news that Owen Hargreaves will return to the club on 23 September.

The midfielder hasn't played for a year, during which time he's had operations on both knees to solve his tendonitis problems.

However, that return date does not mean he will be back playing then. He has been doing rehabilitation work in America over the summer and United will first need to assess at what stage he is at in terms of his recovery. Nevertheless, Sir Alex says his impending return is "a great addition to us".

"We're in dialogue all the time with Owen and the physio who is conducting his rehabilitation in America. He will come with Owen for a week for the change over so that we can jointly understand the treatment and rehabilitation work he has been doing. That's straightforward, that part.

"The difficulty is getting him back into the football work," the boss said on Friday. "I say difficult because we've not seen him all this time. We're relying on the information we get from the States.

"We are certain though that his fitness work will be good, we just have to guage when the right time is to bring him into the football side of training. You don't have a player out for a year and then just throw him into the fire straight away.

"The important thing is to get him back playing to his level, which is a very good level, because he'll be a great addition to us."

In the short-term, it's only Rio and Edwin missing from the United squad that will take on Arsenal this Saturday tea-time. "Everyone else is
