Rafael van der Vaart: I’ve No Chance Of Playing At Real Madrid Under Pellegrini

Rafael van der Vaart has been left with little choice but to leave Real Madrid this summer after being all but banished from the squad by coach Manuel Pellegrini.

And any hopes of patching things up and fighting his way back into favour with the trainer have now well and truly been extinguished after he launched a scathing attacking on the Chilean coach.

“I have nothing to more to say about Pellegrini,” Van der Vaart told Dutch newspaper AD in a bare-all interview.

“His attitude is clear. What more can I expect from him when throughout preparations during the pre-season so far, I’ve been stuck to the bench?

“At the moment I am training as though nothing is wrong, but in truth, everything is wrong. My disappointment and helplessness are there for all to see in capital letters.

“What is there for me to say about Pellegrini when he doesn’t even want me to play a single friendly match?

“When a coach has that kind of attitude, it is clear that you are obliged to take note. My chances at Real Madrid are close to zero, if not completely nil. We must be realistic. I have no place in this team and that’s why the best thing to do is to pack up and leave as soon as possible,” he elaborated.

The 26-year-old also shifted some of the blame to the Casa Blanca administration.

“The worst thing of it all is that Real Madrid have not been very clear with my situation,” he explained.

“Pellegrini has said to me that he definitely does not require me, or at least he will do so sparingly, but Madrid have not said to me, ‘Rafa, you can leave now’.

“It’s obvious that I have a clear idea where I want to go, but out of respect for the clubs who are interested in me, I will not give out any names.”

A number of clubs across Europe are after Van der Vaart’s signature, most prominently Inter, although a return to Hamburg has been touted as a possibility.

Casillas' first squad list
The goalkeeper was first called-up by the first team to face Rosenborg

Real Madrid and Rosenborg clashed in the Champions League on 27 November 1997. The team eventually won its seventh European Cup that year, more than three decades after winning their last title in the competition. The match against the Norwegian side has gone down in history for being the first for which Iker Casillas was called-up by the first team.

Real Madrid had Bodo Illgner, Santiago Cañizares and Albano Bizarri as their goalkeepers at the start of the 1997/98 campaign. The German and the Argentine were injured for the match against Rosenborg and the Spaniard was niggled. Given the state of affairs, coach Jupp Heynckes decided to call-up youth teamer Iker Casillas, who was just 16 years old at the time. The principal at his high-school had to take him out of class to tell him the good news.

Cañizares evetually played and Iker had to wait two more years to make his debut at San Mames. Casillas coincidentally played his 300th game with the first team against Rosenborg.
