The Premier League considering proposals to extend the summer transfer window by one day to September 1 with the August 31 deadline falling on a Bank Holiday.

League officials are said to be concerned that some deals could hit the buffers with large sums being wired between clubs to banks that may not be in operation over the long weekend.

Approval for the plans must be ratified first by world governing body FIFA since the transfer window applies across all global associations but an extension is not unprecedented.

The Premier League came under scrutiny at the beginning of the year when they cleared paperwork Andrey Arshavin's move from Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal despite its late submission, owed to the adverse weather conditions which forced a delay.

But with many manager's anxious that they may miss out on late targets, the Premier League will now consider the practicality of a one-day extension to the deadline in hope they can strike an agreement that would gain widespread approval.

Manchester United have reportedly made tentative enquiries for the reputed Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona target David Silva according to Guillem Balague. The Spanish pundit suggests the English champions have spoken to the Valencia player’s representatives, although thus far no offer has been forthcoming.

The 23-year-old Spanish international has been regularly linked with a move away from cash strapped Valencia; however his situation appeared to be complicated by the ongoing saga surrounding his teammate David Villa’s future.

Balague writes on his official website: “I can tell you that over the last couple of days there has been contact between Manchester United and the representatives of David Silva.”

“However, it resulted in nothing more than an informal conversation about the player’s situation at Valencia and no bid has yet been made by the Premier League club for the transfer of the Spanish international.”

“Can I see him moving to United? Well, Silva does appear content to stay at Valencia for the time being – especially if he is convinced that David Villa is staying - but the club appear happy to sell him for around €30 million, so he could listen to offers.”

He added: “At the moment, as far as Manchester United are concerned, no formal bid has been made for David Silva this summer.”

“Conversations have taken place with his representatives, but United have not made any promises.”

Manchester United host Valencia at Old Trafford tomorrow night, in a intriguing encounter not least because United have been linked to both of their star performers, Villa and Silva. Balague later suggests it would be difficult to draw a line underneath this sage, as Valencia’s financial mare lends to them being very “unpredictable”.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is convinced Michael Owen and Luis Antonio Valencia will make their mark at Old Trafford.

Former Newcastle striker Owen has quickly found his scoring touch with four goals in five games on tour in Asia and Germany after his shock free transfer move.

Valencia, who arrived from Wigan in the summer, showed his quality last week in the Audi Cup by finding the target against Boca Juniors.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side return to Old Trafford action tomorrow when they entertain Valencia in a friendly and Carrick told United Review: "Michael has already done really well.

"He is a top player and I am sure he will score lots of goals for us.

"Antonio joined us a little later for training so I have only seen a bit of him so far.

"But he's already shown what great qualities he has and I'm sure he will be a huge success."

Carrick expects a good test from the Spanish side with the Community Shield date against Chelsea to follow on Sunday.

He said: "It will allow us to gauge where we're at and look at the things that need tweaking or working on.

"There is no better place to do that than Old Trafford. Valencia are a top side and I am sure it will be an entertaining match."

Darren Fletcher has rejected a plea from Scotland boss George Burley to sit out Sunday's Community Shield match between Manchester United and Chelsea.

Burley was desperate to secure the early release of United midfielder Fletcher for next Wednesday's crucial World Cup qualifier in Norway.

The Scotland boss had been in discussions with the player and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson over the issue, but it is understood Fletcher did not want to jeopardise his place in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

After naming his 23-man squad for the Group Nine clash in Oslo, Burley confirmed Fletcher would be his captain in the absence of Celtic's Stephen McManus.

He will now be praying the 25-year-old steers clear of injury at Wembley this weekend, having already lost a number of midfielders for next week's showdown.

Fletcher will fly to Scotland to link up with the squad shortly after Sunday's game.

The majority of the party will convene on Thursday, but the seven Coca-Cola Championship players selected will be on club duty this weekend and will join their international team-mates on Sunday.
