Fergie closes in on Benzema

SIR Alex Ferguson will step up his pursuit of Karim Benzema now that Carlos Tevez' departure has finally been confirmed.

Lyon striker, Benzema, was always going to be at the top of Ferguson's shopping list this summer, with the United manager knowing Cristiano Ronaldo would quit Old Trafford for Real Madrid.

He also wanted to keep hold of Tevez, but the Argentine's decision to turn down a five-year contract has only intensified the need for more firepower.

The loss of both Ronaldo and Tevez has cost United two of their biggest stars - and Ferguson is desperate to replace them with marquee signings.

Benzema fits that bill perfectly, with a bid of around £30m likely to be enough to tempt Lyon to sell one of the most sought-after players in Europe.

The French club have softened their stance over the 21-year-old over the past week - all but inviting Ferguson to make a bid for a player he has tracked for more than two years.

Lyon sporting director Bernard Lacombe said: "Nobody knows what is going to happen. What should we do if Manchester, who have a lot of cash to spend, want to sign Benzema?"

Also on Ferguson's wish list is Franck Ribery, who despite Bayern Munich's insistence that he is not for sale, should be available at around £40m.

Warchest

Even with the £70m double capture of Benzema and Ribery, Ferguson would still have a massive warchest with which to plunder the transfer market - especially now that the £25m earmarked for Tevez is back in the kitty.

Gremio's Brazilian starlet Douglas Costa is a £20m target, while Wigan's Antonio Valencia is expected to sign for £16m.

And Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is convinced the Ecuador international will develop into a world class performer at Old Trafford.

"I think Antonio is the best wide right player anywhere and that includes Franck Ribery," he said. "If this lad goes to Man United he will be a sensation there.

Class

"Within a few months and over the course of a season the United supporters would come to worship this lad.

"We see him week-in week-out in games and in training and he's a world class player.

"He doesn't play the same way as Ronaldo. There is no show or flash, but he's a world class player and he'll take some replacing. No-one tackles him or takes the ball off him because they can't get near him.

"At the kind of money that's been talked about for Antonio he'd be an absolute steal. United appear to be getting £80m for Ronaldo and they would be paying out a fraction of that for Valencia so it would be great business because this boy has got immense ability."

Meanwhile, United have also been linked with Everton youngster Jack Rodwell.

#29880 theBOSS, achizitiile de care vorbesti tu ar fi tare binevenite, dar ramanem totusi cu un gol in echipa. E vorba de un central care sa faca mingi. Daca ati observat de multe ori Wayne sau era Tevez, care trebuiau sa coboare la mijloc sa ia mingea. Aici totusi inca schiopatam... stiu ca o sa spuneti ca il avem pe Carrick, pe Fletcher, Scholes, Gibson, Anderson dar sa fim realisti, avem nevoie de un jucator creativ. Un nou Scholes mai degraba. Ramin la ideea ca un central treb de furat de la real. Poate Sneijder sau Van Der Vaart.

p.s. as fi destul de multumit de lista ceea plus vreun olandez.

#29886 okinkasashka, tre sa fim si realisti. Barca pe asta si se tine, asta inseamna de fapt Barca la moment. Nici o sansa sa cedeze vreo unul. Insa unul din olandezi ar putea sa fie liber sa plece din cauza noilor achizitii. Se auzea ca mai degraba Van Der Vaart dar o sa vedem.

‘France Football’ il vede pe Ribery la Real Madrid

Dupa Kaka si Cristiano Ronaldo, cele mai importante transferuri realizate in fotbalul mondial in ultimii ani, Real Madrid se pregateste sa mai dea o lovitura. Cel putin asa sustine celebra publicatie ‘France Football’ care calculeaza sansele internationalului francez de a ajunge pe Bernabeu. In opinia ziaristilor francezi, Ribery are 48% sanse sa ramana la Bayern, 47% sanse sa vina la Real si doar 5% sanse sa plece la o alta echipa. Francezii scriu ca in acest moment Ribery are sanse sa ramana la Munchen, insa daca va fi sa plece o va face mai mult ca sigur la Real Madrid.

Analizand amanuntit situatia, ‘France Football’ considera ca Bayern Munchen este un club cu o situatie financiara foarte buna in acest moment si ca nu are neaparata nevoie de o injectie de capital si nici de vanzarea lui Scarface. Rummenige si Hoeness ar prefera ca Ribery sa mai joace un sezon pe Allianz si pentru asta cer foarte multi bani pentru mijlocasul minune.

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to rebuild his shattered strike force with a £30million bid for French star Karim Benzema. The United boss returns from holiday this week and will try to patch up his depleted squad with his biggest summer transfer splurge ever. Benzema is United’s prime target and despite publicly resisting a transfer, Lyon are already making moves to replace their 21-year-old striker. The Daily Telegraph features quotes from Benzema's agent who says his client wants to stay in France for another year to prepare for the World Cup.

Former French international Marcel Desailly has urged Sir Alex to pay 'as much as it takes' to sign Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich. "I would put Ribery in the top two wingers in the world. It's Cristiano Ronaldo and then straight away after it's Ribery," insisted Desailly.

Meanwhile, the Mirror reckon Carlos Tevez agreed to join Manchester City two weeks ago and will complete the £47.5 million transfer in the next few days. The paper also features quotes from United striker Fraizer Campbell who is stalling on his £6million move to Hull City. He refused to commit his future to the East coast club yesterday, despite the fee being agreed a fortnight ago.
