Sir Alex Ferguson has broken his silence on the £80million sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid, revealing that he was resigned to losing him and had been fighting a losing battle to keep the Portuguese player at the club for the past two seasons.

It was Ferguson who ultimately authorised the world record transfer last Monday after concluding that it was futile to attempt to persuade Ronaldo to stay, despite his successes in doing so in the summers of 2007 and 2008.

Ferguson, speaking to The Mail on Sunday while on holiday in the south of France, said: 'He wanted to leave, it's as simple as that. He was going to go some time. We've done well to keep him for so long.'

But United fans, still reeling from the departure of the World Player of the Year, will now also have to contemplate the reality of losing crowd favourite Carlos Tevez to rivals Manchester City.

Though United are making desperate efforts to replace Ronaldo and reinvigorate their forward line, it is understood that Tevez has accepted a massive £160,000-a-week deal to move to Eastlands.

City officials, worried that Tevez may yet be persuaded to stay at Old Trafford, are anxious to close the deal, especially since United are unlikely to match a financial package which almost puts the player on a level with record-signing Robinho.

'City feel that United may have dragged their feet a bit over Tevez, but they know it won't be over until he has signed on the dotted line,' said a source close to City.

'Ronaldo's departure has moved the goalposts. United fans have been resigned to him going to Madrid for a long time but they don't want Tevez to follow him out of the door.'

Ronaldo, who will earn around £200,000 a week at Real, is set to sign a record football sponsorship deal with Nike. The company are delighted to have one of their top clients infiltrating the camp of rivals adidas, and are negotiating a £4m-a-year contract.

'Ronaldo will wear Nike boots and that's something adidas cannot be happy about,' said a source close to Real, who wear adidas kit.

Manchester United To Make Shock Move For Liverpool Star Fernando Torres – Report
A British tabloid claims that the English champions are willing to splash out £40 million on their arch-rivals' star man.

Manchester United are reportedly set to use the £80 million they will receive for Cristiano Ronaldo to make a bid for Liverpool’s Fernando Torres.

The Sunday Express claims that the Red Devils will attempt to make an audacious swoop for the Spanish striker as they seek to replace the Real Madrid-bound Ronaldo.

Whilst Liverpool would be loath to see Torres leave, and particularly to bitter rivals United, the report claims that Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to offer £40 million, a figure he believes can tempt the Merseysiders.

A bid of such size would double the amount Liverpool paid for the striker, when they signed him from Atletico Madrid in 2007.

With striker Carlos Tevez also expected to follow Ronaldo out of the Old Trafford exit, attacking options appear to be top of United’s shopping list this summer.

The Premier League champions have already been linked with a host of names including Karim Benzema, Samuel Eto’o, Franck Ribery, Antonio Valencia and David Silva.

Yet they undoubtedly face a tough challenge in replacing Ronaldo who, once again, finished the season as the club’s top scorer.

Of course, Torres could certainly provide the club with goals; the Spaniard managed 14 league goals in an injury-ravaged campaign last term and 24 in the Premier League in his first season at the club.

Manchester United defender Gary Neville has urged the club’s fans to trust their manager, despite the fact they look set to lose talisman Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

The Portuguese international is expected to conclude a deal worth £80 million and move to Madrid in the next few days but Neville insists the club can always cope with the loss of a big star.

“The manager has probably built four or five different teams within the period he's been at United, and it's not been a case of being unsuccessful for three or four years in between while he's been creating a different team," Neville told the Sunday People.

“It's been a brilliant job. Big players have come and gone down the years but the club's success has carried on - and that's down to the way the manager has adapted to situations.”

The defender also insisted that Ferguson would find a way to replace Ronaldo who, once again, finished last season as the club’s top scorer.

“I've heard fans wonder how the club will replace influential players who have been sold but you have to trust the manager - and his record speaks for itself,” said Neville.

"The manager's record is absolutely incredible.

“There is no-one comparable, in terms of his continued success, and to have been here over 22 years is a staggering achievement.”

The England international also insisted that Sir Alex always made the right decisions and that this was is a key factor to United’s success.

“He keeps a control over the whole club in the way he instils the right qualities into everyone,” explained the 34-year-old.

“The other key thing is his decision making. He makes the right decisions and does the right things - that's why he's been able to keep winning trophies.”

The full-back also insisted that, despite his career as a Red Devil winding down, he was still hoping to play his part next season.

"I played a good number of games last season and I hope that continues next season, because playing for this club is as special to me now as it was when I first pulled on the shirt as a schoolboy,” added Neville.

De cand am vrut eu sa vad cum va arata United fara Ronaldo. Adik stiu cum, vroiam doar sa le demonstrez celor care spun ca "Ronaldo is the leader", bla bla bla, "fara dansu-i gata" ... bullshit. A facut mult, dar numai pentru sine + a si uitat cn era cand a venit la United. Imi provoca numai antipatie, mai ales cand vedeam ca "lua jocul asupra sa" si facea mai mult de un kkt.
