Iata ce ne propune eurosport

With Cristiano Ronaldo on the verge of ending one of the longest running transfer sagas ever by joining Real Madrid, we ask the question: who could possibly replace him at Manchester United?

Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich) - The £40m-rated France international presents possibly the best option for United, certainly in terms of experience at the highest level. He appeared in the 2006 World Cup final and has won the Bundesliga with Bayern, as well as scooping individual player of the year awards in both France and Germany. Like Ronaldo, Ribery has skill and pace to burn while providing a real goal threat from an attacking midfield position. He would slot neatly into the right-wing berth in Ferguson's side, but is also able of switching wings and playing more centrally, behind a front man.

Antonio Valencia (Wigan Athletic) - At £20m, the Ecuadorian presents a cheaper option than Ribery but nevertheless offers a degree of versatility. Capable of operating on either wing, Valencia is blessed with natural pace and is happiest running with the ball at his feet and taking players on. Question marks remain over his ability to step up to the highest stage but, at 23, time is on his side.

Karim Benzema (Lyon) - Big, fast and strong with an eye for goal, Benzema is one of the hottest properties in football. Twenty goals for Lyon two years ago were followed by another 17 last season, proving the striker's ability to find the back of the net, even if Ligue 1 is hardly the Premier League. But Benzema has proved he can cut it in the Champions League too, netting five in eight games this past season. Indeed, the only possible downside of signing Benzema would be that Rooney would most likely be shoved out wide to accommodate the Frenchman through the middle.

Arjen Robben/Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid) - With the details of any possible deal with Real Madrid yet to be concluded, a swap deal involving either Dutchman, or both, could yet be brokered. Robben, who has prior experience of the Premier League with Chelsea but a worrying injury record, would provide United with real width, while he also knows where the goal is. And the more versatile Sneijder, who has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich already this summer, is one of few players in the world who come close to matching Ronaldo in terms of free-kick taking.

Nani/Zoran Tosic, (Manchester United) - With relatively few suitable candidates with the credentials to replace Ronaldo presenting themselves on the market, perhaps Ferguson may find a solution a little closer to home. Both could provide viable options. Nani, like Ronaldo, can play on either wing, although, unlike his compatriot, he has so far failed to make the grade at Old Trafford. Tosic, 22, is also yet to star in a United shirt, but Ronaldo's imminent departure presents both with a real chance to stand up and be counted, should they be given a chance.

Alt articol tot de acolo, destul de interesant...

It finally looks as if Cristiano Ronaldo is about to swap Manchester United for Real Madrid, moving from one footballing giant to another.

But is it a step up or a step down?

We look at Manchester United and Real Madrid in 10 different categories to figure out which is the bigger and better club.

Fans

The Bernabeu stadium (80,354) has a larger capacity than Old Trafford (76,212), though United averaged nearly 4,000 more fans per game last season - 75,304 compared to 71,523.

This can be partially explained by United's success, but even when Real are winning leagues it is relatively simple for Joe Soap to get tickets for all but the biggest games. The same cannot be said at United, where Old Trafford is sold out every week.

Both have huge global support but United were first into the lucrative Asian market and seem to have the worldwide edge too.

Finally, there is the question of noise. Both clubs could do more when it comes to games against lowly sides, but the Old Trafford faithful seem to generate a bit more of an atmosphere on the big occasions.

Who's better? United.

Stadiums

Both clubs play at fantastic stadiums, but the Bernabeu has the edge for a number of reasons. First, there is a bit more going on in its surrounding area and it is closer to the city centre. Indeed, some Manchester City fans argue that Old Trafford is not actually in Manchester at all.

Of course the Bernabeu can also cram in more fans, but the key thing we like about Real's stadium is the delightful feature of heaters on the roof.

Some will think such luxury goes against football's traditions, and they may have a point. But it is unlikely United fans would ask for such heaters to be turned off on a cold December evening against Burnley.

Who's better? Real

Money

Real topped the Deloitte Rich List for the fourth successive year with revenues of £289.6 million, compared to United's £257.1m.

These figures were for 2007/2008 and United are likely to have closed the gap last season given all their success.

One thing that has helped Real hold off United's challenge is the current strength of the euro to the pound. Also, Real have a relationship the with banks in Spain that United could only dream off.

In real terms, both clubs are burdened with massive debts, but Real have a history of being able to write off their debts with impunity.

Who's better? Real

Recent success

Since the start of the Premier League in 1992, United's level of dominance in the English game cannot be disputed.

They have won 11 league titles in that period, four FA Cups and two League Cups. They have also won two European Cups and are the current world champions.

Over the same period, Real have won just six domestic titles and two Spanish Cups. But they do have the edge over United in Europe, having won the title three times.

Nevertheless, Real failed to win anything last year while United enjoyed a treble - League, League Cup, World Club Cup - before losing in the Champions League final.

Who's better? United

Historical success

While United have ruled in recent years, Real have been a more consistently dominant force than the English side. They have won a record 31 Liga titles, a record nine European Cups and 17 Spanish Cups.

United have been catching up in recent years but have a long way to go before they can match those figures.

Who's better? Real

Current Squads

Real's dismal defeats to Liverpool and Barcelona last season highlighted the flaws in their squad - although to be fair, United also had trouble against those teams.

The respective gaining and losing of Ronaldo certainly closes the gap, while Real's capture of Kaka strengthens them further.

But are Real not making the same mistake they made the last time Florentino Perez was in charge?

Once again they seem to be loading their team with forward talent at the expense of a leaky defence, which will be weakened further next season by the loss of Fabio Cannavaro.

It is worth remembering the last time Real Madrid signed a big player from United. They paid £25 million in 2003 to make David Beckham their latest galactico but finished only fourth the following season. It was only in Beckham's fourth season that he finally won a Liga medal.

United's defence gives them the edge and you have to suspect they will use the Ronaldo money to boost their attacking options before the start of the season too.

Who's better? United

Tradition

Romantics in Spain are more drawn to Barcelona than Real, who have always been deemed the Francoist team with all the negative connotations that brings.

Perhaps the key event in United's history was the Munich air disaster, with the club's brave and impressive revival under Matt Busby to that tragedy winning fans far beyond the confines of Manchester.

Both sides have developed world-class players through their youth systems, but Real have more tradition buying success that United. The English champions most successful periods tend to be when they have a home-grown core in their squad.

Who's better? United

Past Players

So many great players have adorned the red of United and the white of Real Madrid. How can you compare the likes of Edwards, Law, Charlton, Best, Cantona, Keane and Schmeichel to di Stefano, Kopa, Puskas, Butragueno, Figo, Zidane and Raul?

The answer? You can't.

Who's better? Tie

Location

Warm, sunny Madrid (although it can get surprisingly cold) or wet, miserable Manchester? Delightful tapas and sangria or hot pot with a pint of Boddingtons?

Ok, we are being unfair and simplistic, but we are going to take a flyer and guess that Madrid appeals a little more than Manchester to a Portuguese boy.

Who's better? Real

Manager

Manuel Pellegrini is the latest in the Real Madrid hot seat. His record in South America and especially at Villarreal proves he is an excellent coach, but how long will he last at Real? One slip-up and he could be shown the door.

On the other hand, Sir Alex Ferguson IS Manchester United. Astonishingly, Pellegrini is Real Madrid's 23rd coach since Ferguson took over at Old Trafford in 1986.

Who better? United

Overall

We have looked at each club in 10 different categories and have United ahead in five, Real winning four, and one tie.

Our conclusion? You've made a terrible decision Cristiano.

Should we make an effort to sign English players?

Looking at the transfer dealings and rumours so far this summer I've started to think maybe we need to get more English/British players through to the first team. Not because of the usual national team stuff, but because it will help United. Here's why:

Loyalty - Foreign players see Milan or Madrid as higher profile clubs and will use United as a stepping stone to get there. British players view the top 4 as their ultimate destination and as long as they're playing won't want to leave. Case in point...Ronaldo and Tevez linking themselves with other clubs, Anderson and Vidic being linked (however tenuously) with moves abroad. Who's to say that Nani or the daSilva twins wouldn't do the same if they ever make it. Domestic players are more loyal to their clubs in all leagues. The Seire A is being emptied of their foreign stars at the moment, Kaka to Madrid, Ribery to anyone with money, Adebayor to Milan... With the exception of Becks and Sparky, our British players have stayed loyal as long as they're playing.

Youth Development - We've had a history of bringing through youth from the Busby Babes to the Class of 92. Our two periods of dominance were built on Best, Law, Charlton and Giggs, Scholes and Neville et al. I think selling Campbell, Gibson and Simpson because Welbeck and Macheda are coming through would be a mistake. Pique and Rossi were both nicked in the way Macheda was and they're both back staring for their old clubs back home. What's to say Macheda won't do the same? I know times change, but we did the treble with Nikky Butt and Phil Neville. Why not play Gibson, Campbell, Simpson and Welbeck in semi-meaningful games and give them a shot before we ship them out.

Local Soul - We've cast jealous eyes when Newcastle appointed Shearer as manager because he was their local kid. We've talked about our Pep Guardiola figure as manager when Fergie retires. We complain about United turning into this corporate souless entity with no local connection. Giggs, Scholes and Neville will all retire within the next 3 years...and then what? Where's the heart and soul of our club then? Rooney and Rio I guess, but even Arsenal have Walcott and Gibbs. Casillas has said Madrid should forget about foreign superstars and bring through young Spanish talent. Maybe we should too.

6+5 - Some form of this is coming one way or another. The perceived pilfering of young South Americans and Africans by european clubs is gaining critical mass and there will be a push back somewhere. Maybe it will come as part of our World Cup bid I don't know, but it will come in at some point in some way shape or form. We need to be ready just in case.

Cost - The Class of 92 was more or less free. Given our current debt loads we should be trying to replicate this instead of buying foreign stars who may or may not want to stay here. Granted it is more expensive to buy established English talent, but at least they're going to stick around.

Barcelona - Their youth teams are trained how to play the Barcelona way through all levels. When they get to the CL Final, they can throw people in and not miss a beat. They nurture their young Spanish talent and supplement them with foreign players where necessary...Messi, Henry, Eto'o, Alves all do jobs that their current young players can't do. Don't we have British kids who can do Park's job? or Tevez's job? or Anderson's job? I'm not talking about replacing Ronaldo with Stuart Downing, because Ronaldo does a job that no English player can. But Ashley Young can do the same job Valencia or Nani can. Campbell or Welbeck can do the same job Tevez can. Maybe Gibson can do Anderson's job one day?

The first thing Guardiola did was to tell unhappy mercenaries like Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto'o where the door was and build his midfield around Xavi and Iniesta. There's been never ending drama surrounding United this season and it can't be helping things.

I'm not talking about turning us into Altetico Bilbao or Newcastle or anything but I have started to change my mind on summer transfers. Ribery or Benzema would be brilliant players for the short term, but perhaps that's not what we really need. If we have the choice this summer I would prefer to concentrate on bringing through English players, either youth players or through transfers, and rebuilding that English/British core/identity/future/heart and soul/spine. Then we can supplement that core with foreign players like Ronaldo, Cantona, Berbatov etc.
