Premier League - Vermaelen claims Arsenal deal

Ajax centre-back Thomas Vermaelen claims he is on the verge of a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners are reported to have agreed a £10million fee for the 23-year-old Belgiun international.

Vermaelen told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad: "Moving to Arsenal is the right path for me.

"It is a great sporting challenge and I will also be financially better off. I think everything is going to be okay.

"In the coming days there will be more talks."

Premier League - Ferguson 'turned down Arsenal'

Sir Alex Ferguson turned down the chance to manage Arsenal before taking over at Manchester United, according to ex-United man Jim Leighton.

Former Scotland goalkeeper Jim Leighton made the claim on a BBC programme about the 1986 World Cup, at which Ferguson managed the Scots on a caretaker basis following the death of Jock Stein.

Leighton said Arsenal approached the then-Aberdeen manager before the tournament in Mexico, but Ferguson refused the offer as he was unwilling to commit to a club while still on international duty.

"Ferguson was offered the Arsenal job," said Leighton. "George Graham would have been his assistant, but he wanted to wait until the World Cup was finished before it was getting announced.

"Arsenal said they wanted it (a decision) straight away and so he refused it and George Graham got the job."

"He wanted to announce it when he got back to Aberdeen, to do it the right way."

Ferguson also refused the Tottenham job, and stayed with the Dons until November 1986 when he replaced Ron Atkinson at Old Trafford.

He has gone on to land a staggering haul of trophies, including 11 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

Graham led Arsenal to two league titles, one FA Cup and the Cup-Winners' Cup but was sacked in 1995 following revelations of financial irregularities.

Leighton also claimed Ferguson's controversial omission from the World Cup of Liverpool defender Alan Hansen was due to the player's lack of consistency.

"As far as Alan Hansen was concerned, Fergie believed that he wasn't always 'turning up' for games against maybe Luxembourg, the Faroes or San Marino," said Leighton.

"He only wanted to 'turn up' for the really important games."

Thomas Vermaelen (23 ani), fundaşul echipei olandeze de fotbal Ajax Amsterdam, va semna în această săptămână un contract pe patru ani cu formaţia engleză Arsenal Londra, conform agentului jucătorului, citat de luni presa belgiană.

Mai multe cotidiane olandeze au anunţat luni dimineaţă că Ajax şi Arsenal au ajuns la un acord săptămâna trecută privind valoarea transferului (13 milioane euro).

"Prima ofertă a clubului englez este satisfăcătoare, dar negocierile vor continua şi în următoarele zile. Dar nu există nici o îndoială că acordul va interveni", a explicat Soren Lerby, agentul jucătorului, conform Agerpres.

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he has no intention of copying Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and moving to Real Madrid in a big money transfer.

The side from the Spanish capital had an offer of £80 million for the Portuguese accepted by the Red Devils, but Fabregas, a Catalan, claims that he wants to to bring silverware to the Emirates, not play for the 'new Galacticos' being assembled at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona, too, have been all but ruled out.

"Of course I see my future at Arsenal. I have a very long contract with the club," Fabregas, speaking before the Ronaldo move was confirmed, said in an interview with Arsenal TV Online.

"I would have never signed that if I did not think I was capable of making it (to the end of the contract).

"The boss knows that I really want to stay here. What you cannot stop is what people say about you. The press can write or say whatever they want.

"Here, I do not get involved at all. Since I am 18, they have been saying that - but I am still here."

And Fabregas acknowledged that he was a man who allowed emotion to govern his actions, and his sentimental attraction to the Gunners meant that he had no plans to leave just yet.

"I just say what I feel - and what I feel is that I hope I can be at Arsenal for many years and lift trophies which they have never lifted before, like the Champions League, to lift the Premier League, FA Cups," he added.

"I am really looking forward to it because I am sure the future is bright here."
