"The Apache" ar putea rămâne pe Old Trafford

The title in two minutes

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. We’re not holding our breath, but one day the facts – a popular word this season – might stack up enough for the penny to drop elsewhere. Cast your minds back to 1998/99. Notice any similarities? In that season United won two of the opening five games. Crisis, they said. Whatever. Last season? Slow start. This season? Slow start. There’s a pattern emerging.

Chelsea, under ‘Big Phil’ Scolari, made hay in the early-season sunshine. A(nother) new dawn broke over Eastlands. And Liverpool stirred their loins. All the while we waited in the wings, and when the supporting cast had delivered their best lines and started to ad lib, the leading men assumed centre stage, parts learned off by heart, roles well-defined and well-rehearsed. Lights, camera, action!

By October’s end and a 2-0 victory over West Ham – in which the newly-crowned World Footballer of the Year (Ronny, who else?) bagged his first league brace of the campaign – the boss had started to talk about “a momentum that I believe will take some stopping”. New boys Hull showed the teeth that had characterised the Tigers’ pre-Christmas campaign, leaving Old Trafford after a spirited 4-3 defeat, but, to quote the bard of Stretford, Morrissey,November spawned a monster – especially if you happened to be an opposing striker. For the 13 league games after the 2-1 reverse at Arsenal that followed Hull, our defence turned away all-comers, setting a British record shut-out of 1,311 minutes into the bargain.

To prove we’re not just take, take, take, we even offered Newcastle fans a rare moment of cheer as Peter Lovenkrands put the ball past Edwin van der Sar – the first time we’d gone behind since January. But in between, we’d won at Eastlands, returned from Japan with the Club World Cup, battered Stoke 5-0 (ton-up for Ronny), and made the Champions League knockout stage as group winners. Paul Scholes was back in the fold and the next generation had taken us to the Carling Cup final. Phew.

And so, here we are: champions once again. It wasn’t a sprint, it was a marathon, but we entered the final straight, firing on all cylinders to reach our third title in a row for the second time under Sir Alex Ferguson – something no English club has achieved before. Brilliant season? That’s a fact.

Glory, glory Man United

United are English league champions for the 18th time.

1907/08, 1910/1911, 1951/52, 1955/56, 1956/57, 1964/65, 1966/67, 1992/93, 1993/94, 1995/96, 1996/97, 1998/99, 1999/00, 2000/01, 2002/03, 2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09

**************************************************************************

The 20 defining moments that won Manchester United the Premier League title

1. Luis Felipe Scolari arrives at Stamford Bridge - July 1, 2008

Chelsea have become Manchester United’s biggest rivals since Roman Abramovich opened his chequebook and last summer they needed a world-class manager. They thought Scolari was the man for the job but alarm bells started ringing when his relaxed attitude to training contributed to poor results against teams such as Southend United and CFR Cluj. If Abramovich had signed up Guus Hiddink on a permanent basis last summer, the title may have ended up back in West London.

2. Rafa cracks up – January 9, 2009

It’s January, Liverpool are top of the table and Rafael Benitez decides that this is the perfect moment to hit the self-destruct button. The Spaniard marches into a press conference, takes out a piece of paper and rambles on about how Sir Alex Ferguson is responsible for dodgy refereeing decisions, the Respect campaign falling apart, global warming and the credit crunch. When Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford, United had won the title seven times and Liverpool had won it 16 times. Now it's 18-18. That’s a fact.

3. Liverpool fail to beat Stoke City – January 10, 2009

Rafa’s rant is back page news as Liverpool try to do their talking on the pitch at the Britannia Stadium but Benítez hands the initiative to Stoke by starting with Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane on the bench and Liverpool fail to beat Stoke for the second time this season.

4. Fletcher scores against Newcastle United – August 17, 2008

It’s the first game of the season at Old Trafford, Kevin Keegan’s side have just taken the lead through Obafemi Martins and United supporters are beginning to wonder whether their title defence is going to start with an embarrassing home defeat by Newcastle. Two minutes later, Fletcher beats Shay Given and all is well in the world again.

5. Abu Dhabi United Group buy Manchester City – September 1, 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson had never known anything like it. City are keeping United off the back and front pages by becoming the richest club in the world and sharing the limelight means that Ferguson has more time to concentrate on what he does best – winning trophies.

6. Manchester United 3 Chelsea 0 – January 11, 2009

The beginning of the end for Luis Felipe Scolari as United rip apart a Chelsea side who look a shadow of the teams that Jose Mourinho used to bring to Manchester. The Inter Milan manager, who is on a scouting mission in the Old Trafford directors’ box, does not look very impressed. Scolari lost his job a month later.

7. Arsene Wenger keeps his chequebook in his pocket

Arsenal supporters were crying out for Wenger to splash the cash last summer but the Frenchman decided to buy Samir Nasri, Aaron Ramsey and Mikael Silvestre instead of the world-class defensive midfiled player and centre back that his side desperately needed. Arsenal lost five times in the league before Christmas and were never serious challengers in the title race.

8. Tévez sparks United fightback as Tottenham collapse – April 25, 2009

It was not looking good for United at 6.30pm on Saturday April 25. Liverpool were top of the league and United were losing 2-0 at home to Spurs. Sir Alex Ferguson needed to do something and he went for the nuclear option. On came Carlos Tévez and United played the second half with four forwards - Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Tévez. Forty five minutes later Spurs had lost 5-2 and United were back on top of the table.

9. Mike Phelan replaces Carlos Queiroz – September 3, 2008

Not many assistants leave their jobs to manage their country but Sir Alex Ferguson had a problem on his hands when Carlos Queiroz left Old Trafford to manage Portugal last summer. Ferguson could have replaced Queiroz with a big name but he promoted from within and Phelan has not let anyone down.

10. Losing the plot at Fulham – March 21, 2009

United needed a wake-up call in March and they got one when they were beaten 2-0 by Fulham at Craven Cottage. Just to make matters worse, Scholes and Rooney were sent off in a bad-tempered clash down by the River Thames. It may have seemed like the end of the world at the time but United never looked back.

11. Giggs rolls back the years – February 8, 2009

Upton Park has been the graveyard of United’s title hopes before, so Ronaldo and co were up against it when they faced Gianfranco Zola’s team in Ferbruary. Ryan Giggs started on the right wing and the 35-year-old scored the crucial goal that kept United on course for their 18th league title.

12. Liverpool sign Robbie Keane for £20 million – July 28, 2008

Liverpool would probably have won the title for the first time in 19 years if they had signed a striker that Rafael Benitez actually wanted last summer. United have Rooney, Ronaldo, Berbatov and Tévez; Liverpool, who have scored more league goals than United this season, have Fernando Torres and a bloke called Ngog.

13. Rotation

Supporters may hate it, but it is unlikely that United would have successfully defended their title if Sir Alex Ferguson had not juggled his resources. The United manager has not named an unchanged team this season. That keeps his best players fresh and means the opposition never know who they are going to come up against.

14. Steve Bruce brings on Mido for Charles N’Zogbia – May 13, 2009

Wigan Athletic were on course for a well-deserved point against United last week when Bruce decided to bring on Mido and take off N’Zogbia. The switch meant that Hugo Rodallega had to play on the left wing and track back John O’Shea. When the Colombian failed to do his job in the 86th minute, O’Shea surged forward and set up the Michael Carrick goal that took United to within touching distance of the title.

15. Tévez scores against Stoke City – December 26, 2008

Not many teams beat Stoke at the Britannia Stadium and United were lucky to return to Manchester with three points on Boxing Day after Carlos Tévez found the back of the net seven minutes from time.

16. Biggest club in the world beats richest club in the world – November 30, 2008

United have beaten nearly every team outside the top six home and away this season and three of their most precious points were picked up at the home of their local rivals. City were up for it in November, but so was Wayne Rooney and his 42nd minute goal went some way to making up for the double derby defeat last season.

17. Kia Joorabchian signs Carlos Tevez - December 2004

The Iranian-born businessman doesn’t always get a good press but if he had not signed up Carlos Tévez – in a Shell petrol station in Buenos Aires – it is unlikely that the Argentina forward would have ended up at Old Trafford on a loan agreement that you need an accountancy and law degree to understand. The bottom line is Tévez is a United player for the time being and, according to Ferguson, he will be one for many years to come. Sounds like a win-win situation all round.

18. The Italian Job – April 5, 2009

United have scored some memorable goals this season and Federico Macheda’s dramatic late strike against Aston Villa is right up their with Ronaldo’s long-range effort away to Porto as the goal of the season. Time was running out at Old Trafford on April 5 and it looked as if United were going to have to settle for a 2-2 draw until a 17-year-old Italian forward who was plucked from the Lazio youth team decided to make a name for himself.

19. Tévez and Ronaldo throw their toys out of the pram in the derby – May 10, 2009

United needed seven points from their last four games of the season to win the title. Rivals City started confidently, but it was game over as soon as Ronaldo scored from a free kick and Tévez wrapped up the victory with a sensational strike from the edge of the penalty area. Cue bizarre Tévez goal celebration and a Ronaldo hissy fit after he was replaced by Paul Scholes, but another three points in the bag was all that really mattered.

20. United sign Dimitar Berbatov for £30 million – September 1, 2008

He doesn’t tackle, he doesn’t sweat and he doesn’t run much but Fergie thinks he’s worth £30 million and who are we to argue?

Federico Macheda, centre, curls home Manchester United's winning goal against Aston Villa

Net-buster: Carlos Tevez, left, buries the only goal of the game late on against Stoke City

Rafael Benitez decides that this is the perfect moment to hit the self-destruct button

Dimitar Berbatov divides critics but has chipped in with crucial goals, including the last-minute winner against Bolton

Arsenal's failure to buy experience ultimately cost their title chances
