Man Utd welcome back Neville, Foster in Chelsea win
tribalfooball.com - August 18, 2008

Manchester United captain Gary Neville featured in last night's reserve-team victory over Chelsea.

The fullback featured in reserve-team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defence as he continued his recovery from long-term injury problems, while fellow international Ben Foster played in goal.

Neville was not called into the England squad this week, with head coach Fabio Capello allowing him time to build up his fitness at club level.

Chelsea's young side dominated the match and created almost all of the few chances, most notably when Foster held on well to Jacob Mellis' shot from the edge of the area after 59 minutes.

But United, also boasting highly-rated Brazilian twins Fabio and Rafael in their team, took the lead against the run of play just a minute later.

Danny Drinkwater finished well from eight yards following a ricochet in the Chelsea area.

Jeffrey Bruma almost equalised for the Londoners with 13 minutes left but Jimmy Derbyshire blocked his header on the line, while Foster also saved two more powerful efforts by the lively Mellis.

Hargreaves: More to come

OWEN Hargreaves has vowed Manchester United fans will see much better from him after claiming he was never more than 60% fit last season.

The midfielder was plagued by a tendinitis problem last term, an injury which resurfaced at the start of this season.

Armed with the knowledge gained from 12 months ago, United's medical staff feel they have got on top of the injury.

And while Sir Alex Ferguson feels next Monday's Barclays Premier League trip to Portsmouth may come too soon for Hargreaves, the 27-year-old is confident than when he does eventually make an appearance he will be around for good.

"There is a lot more to come from me," he said.

"I don't think I played a game healthy last season. I was at about 50 or 60% at best.

"When I had another scan on the knee this summer it had not improved, so I came back early to try to fix it at the beginning of pre-season.

"Hopefully I will be fit pretty soon."

Hargreaves knows he is being missed, especially now midfield colleague Michael Carrick has joined a massive list of absentees.

Frustrated

The former Bayern Munich man is also being forced to sit out England's friendly with the Czech Republic on tomorrow and, quite possibly, the crucial World Cup qualifiers with Andorra and Croatia next month.

However, while he is understandably frustrated at not being able to play any part at present, Hargreaves remains confident everything will turn out fine in the end, just as it did last term as he ended up a Premier League and Champions League winner.

"I am not going to set a timetable but I am close," he said.

"I am working on my fitness every day and while I have not joined in with the lads yet, hopefully it will happen this week.

"Whether I am fit for Portsmouth or the match after that, the most important thing is I am healthy for the rest of the season."

Hargreaves has no doubt he made the right decision in quitting Bayern Munich for United, allowing the Calgary-born star to play in the country he opted to play for.

He could never say Bayern did not have state-of-the-art facilities. However, he does feel the whole operation at United is geared towards improvement.

"I know how much I better I can get being around the players and coaching staff here," he said.

"I have not even come close to fulfilling my potential yet. And, providing I stay healthy, this could be a really big season for me."

United: Foster; Neville, Chester, Eckersley, Gray; Rafael, Drinkwater, Gibson, Fabio; Hewson, Macheda.

Primesc satisfactie de la asemenea rezultate, atunci cand ii vad pe "albastrei invinsi"
MANCHESTER UNITED - unknown team 1-0

Manager Fabio Capello is expected to name his permanent England captain on Tuesday, with defender Rio Ferdinand the favourite to land the job.

Manchester United's Ferdinand, 29, was one of four candidates tried out by Capello in his first games in charge.

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, Chelsea's John Terry and Los Angeles Galaxy's David Beckham are expected to miss out.

If Ferdinand is appointed captain he will lead the team out for the friendly with the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Terry, 27, was the captain under former coach Steve McClaren as England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole says the England players will support whoever Capello decides should take over the captaincy.

"Whoever gets the armband will get the support from all of us from the start," confirmed Cole.

"There are five or six leaders out there and the boys will get right behind whoever it is."

Capello has taken his time to choose who will wear the armband on a permanent basis, the decision coming eight months after he was appointed as McClaren's replacement.

Gerrard captained the side in Capello's first friendly against Switzerland, Ferdinand for the defeat in France, Terry for the 2-0 win over the United States and Beckham for the game against Trinidad and Tobago in June.

The Italian said all along he was merely trying out the players in the role and would make a permanent choice in time for the World Cup qualifiers, which begin in September.

Ferdinand has been in stunning form for Manchester United in the last couple of seasons and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently said he was "close to being the best centre-back in the world".

Ferdinand is also widely considered to have matured off the pitch as well as on it after some ill-considered behaviour early on in his career.

He was also the only player in the Champions League final in May between United and Chelsea who joined up with the England squad for their summer friendly in Trinidad.

The other players were all given time off to rest after a long season.

Terry, who missed a crucial penalty in that final, is increasingly dogged by injury - the dislocated elbow he suffered in May was his eighth fitness problem since December 2006.

However, new Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has urged Capello to pick Terry as his captain on a permanent basis.

"I say to my friend Capello that Terry is a very good choice," said Scolari. "He is a proper captain. He is a man that when you say something to him he will help you achieve it."

England's next game after the Czech Republic encounter at Wembley is a World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona on Saturday 6 September.

Man Utd ready to turn to Ajax's Huntelaar

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to make an offer for Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, it has been revealed.
The Times says Dimitar Berbatov is worried that United will try to sign Huntelaar from Ajax if Tottenham refuse to lower their £30 million asking price.

***********************************************************************

ARGENTINA! Anderson and co. Embarrassed

ARGENTINA! surprisingly battered Brazil in today’s semi-final at the Olympics, meaning they will not go on to play Nigeria in Saturday’s final for the gold medal.

The referee was taking no prisoners, sending off two frustrated Brazilian’s for challenges that would usually see just a yellow card in the Premiership. However, there were no complaints from me, considering the cynical nature of both of them. It was also pleasing enough to see that dipper midget, Javier Mascherano, on the receiving end of both of them!

The match was over long before the red cards though, with Argentina dominating the match, particularly in the second half. They scored 3 goals, one of which a Riquelme penalty, following a (wrongly) disallowed Pato goal for Brazil.

Sadly though, it doesn’t mean we’ll get Anderson, who is sporting a new shorter haircut, back much sooner, with the play-off for the bronze medal taking place on Friday at noon. The upside of course is our young midfielder is likely to win this honour, considering that Belgium are their opponents.

Ramos wants quick resolution of Berbatov's move to United, to raise the funds to bring in Forlan or Santa Cruz

Spurs boss Juande Ramos wants the Dimitar Berbatov saga to be concluded as soon as possible - and he has his eye on Diego Forlan and Roque Santa Cruz as possible replacements.

Ramos has decided Berbatov's imminent exit will clear the air at White Hart Lane and allow him to bring in the strikers he needs, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Spaniard has been following Forlan for the past month and is prepared to offer Atletico Madrid £14million for the Uruguayan.

Who do the worlds best players prefer to play for Real Madrid, Chelsea or Manchester United?
Let’s face it; these three teams can attract any footballer in the world. In this era of football where money does most of the talking, it is Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid who are having all the success because they are the ones splashing the cash on world class players. But which team out of the three is the one footballers would most like to play for?

Manchester United managed to hold off Real Madrid from poaching Cristiano Ronaldo for at least another season although it is his ultimate dream to one day play Los Blancos.

World class striker Dimitar Berbatov dreams of leaving the Lane to fulfil his footballing dream of playing for Manchester United.

And Robinho has expressed his desire to leave Real Madrid and play for Chelsea.

"The dream of Chelsea is broken because Real Madrid will not even negotiate," said Ribeiro.
"It is impossible to advance any conversation.
"Next summer we will sort out the situation if people can show some sense."
Robinho is understood to have been unhappy with Real due to the club's reported willingness to include him in any deal for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.” (Daily Star)

So who do supporters think is the biggest team in football? Would world class players go with the football history and sunny climate of Madrid, the awesome history of Manchester United or the fashionable millionaire lifestyle provided by Chelsea?

#14397 Deathfan, +1.. uite ce am gasit...

I think I showed what kind of character I am to the manager, to come back like I did after that huge disappointment. Maybe that persuaded the manager. It was a boost that he gave me the armband [against the USA]. On the pitch, I played well and scored the goal – it helped.

Si ce ai facut? Ai plins ca o muiere in finala la CL.. esti arogant, te pui pe tine inaintea ekipei 'On the pitch, I played well and scored the goal'.. capetz

Interview shows John Terry to be small-minded and self-centered

Just had a quick read through the comments of Chelsea captain John Terry here (his interview in the ICON magazine published yesterday), and I’m afraid he should have kept his mouth shut and gotten on with the game instead of giving this interview.

He’s quite passionate about football - we see that at Chelsea so if he’s upset about losing the England captaincy and thinks of it as a snub to his leadership qualities, that’s understandable. The way he goes on in the interview, he’s defending himself against all the press he’s been getting about his ‘behavior’ off the pitch and on the pitch when playing for Chelsea and that his right.

On the other hand, giving such an interview - even if he’s talking about himself and Capello rather than anyone else - is essentially shitting on his teammate Rio Ferdinand, who has done, by all accounts, a fair job when asked to be Manchester United captain and has led his backline with authority and passion. You only need to see the bawling over Rio gives to EVDS when the senior man makes a mistake - if that’s not passion, what is?

Here’s part of what Terry said:

“If they don’t want an England captain fighting for England in every way possible, fighting to win the ball and come out of the tackle, fighting for the cause, then that’s down to them to make that decision.”

and…

“If Mr Capello wants someone who is going to go out there, desperate to win and to do everything it takes, then I’ll be his right choice. If not, that’s down to him to make the decision.”

A lot of what he says, I agree with. He wants to win, he fights hard, etc etc, I believe it and I value it. The only problem is that he does that for Chelsea, while not for England. None of his other teammates perform at the same level either as they do for their clubs, so you could argue that it’s relative, but if the whole team is playing piss-poor does that transform one man’s efforts into ‘great’? No, on an objective scale, Terry is a winner for Chelsea, not necessarily so for England.

But more than that, John Terry, as Chelsea captain and former England captain, and as a person who wants the armband so very much, should be smart enough not to put down his teammate and temporary captain the way he has in this interview. Where Rio Ferdinand talked about the temporary nature of his appointment and his desire to do the best for England, Terry was going on about how he deserved the captaincy.

Terry:

“The money, the lifestyle, counts for nothing, it’s about the performance. More than the performance, it’s the winning. I am not going to change. It’s for the people in charge, the new manager, to make their decision.”

This is outright whining and childish stubbornness. You’re being asked to lead by example, and part of that ‘leadership’ requires you to be respectful to your teammates as well as respectful of the spirit of the game. If you can’t do that, then at least perform when called upon.

At this point, JT is showing all the necessary passion and none of the intelligence that leadership requires. That might work in the Premier League, it doesn’t work on the international stage.

His comments are the sort of talk that divide teams - and it not only hurts his relationship with Rio but with other Manchester United players as well. I’m sure both are big enough to work it out between them, but if Terry wanted to keep his public image clean, he could have gone and fucked Britney Spears and caused less damage.
