Cristiano Ronaldo: I'm never going back to Man United

Cristiano Ronaldo has refused to come back and face Sir Alex Ferguson - in a last desperate bid to force Manchester United to sell him to Real Madrid.

Sources close to the Portugal star claimed: "Cristiano is not going back today, tomorrow, or any time soon. Everyone knows what he wants."

The 23-year-old was due to return to United's Carrington training ground today - with Real insisting the winger wanted to confirm to Fergie his "dream" of moving to the Bernabeu face-to-face.

But as the Spanish giants finally prepared to make an official £70million bid, Ronaldo decided against his return to Manchester.

Real president Ramon Calderon remained behind in London after the weekend's Emirates Cup competition amid speculation that he had scheduled a meeting with United's top brass.

That failed to materialise but while Ferguson has remained utterly insistent that Ronaldo will not be allowed to leave, Real believe that there are now cracks in United's resolve.

That will see Real make their move at last before the end of the week, with a draft plan that envisages the signing being completed by August 14 - and Ronaldo becoming the most expensive player in football history.

Ronaldo's refusal to come back to England is part of that thinking, with the player understood to have told friends he has no wish whatsoever to return to Carrington.

That suggests that Ronaldo is scared of what will happen if he is forced to confront Fergie's infamous 'hairdryer'.

United privately insist there is no issue - and are confident that the player will be back at the club before the end of this week - but the new stance is clearly provocative.

Although Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, is doubtful that the transfer will take place, Real's determination to land Ronaldo has intensified after Dutch schemer Wesley Sneijder suffered a serious injury in a clash with Arsenal's Abou Diaby on Sunday.

Real will today parade their first summer signing with Hamburg's Rafael van der Vaart arriving in a £7m deal.

But Ronaldo remains their priority and his unwillingness to confront Ferguson is seen as further evidence that he wants the deal to be done over the next month, so that he does not have to face the manager's ire directly.

Manchester United's cunning plan to persuade Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at the club will be to tell him he can leave next summer instead.

But that's not Fergie's plan. While The Sun's back page announces that United's owners will give Ronaldo a Ј65m get-out clause, the small print includes the intriguing detail that 'they will first have to sway boss Alex Ferguson who is dead against selling the Portugal winger'.

Ronaldo is due back in Manchester this week for a check-up on his injured ankle and is also expected to hold a meeting with Ferguson.

The Sun quotes a 'United insider saying: "Sir Alex is determined he will not let Ronaldo go now, if only on principle.

"But there are one or two people at United who are thinking 'What's the point of hanging on to him?' when Real are ready to offer so much money.

"And Ronaldo will miss the start of the season in any case through injury.

"One solution being looked at is for Ronaldo to stay one more season, with the guarantee he can go for an agreed fee at the end of next season."

Should Dr Mark Kermode ever need someone to fill in for him as the BBC’s resident film buff, he should put in a quick call in to Old Trafford. For some reason, someone from The Sun asked Sir Alex about the 456th best film of 2008, Wanted, which he labelled as “diabolical” and “very disappointing”.

Moving on from his spot-on analysis of Angelina Jolie’s latest effort, he went on to call Gone With The Wind “epic and spectacular” and he also told us the third Godfather film wasn’t as good as the first two. Insightful stuff.

Madrid Set Date For Ronaldo Presentation
According to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, Real Madrid have already set a date, or perhaps a final dateline, to present Cristiano Ronaldo to the world… The moment of truth is here. The Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga is predicted to finally come to a close this week with the player himself expected to confront Sir Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United owners to sort out his Old Trafford future once and for all.

It is most likely to be a battle of wills: a question of whether the Portuguese can convince his manager to let him go or whether the Scot can persuade his superstar to stay.

Over in the Iberian Peninsula, meanwhile, the thorn in Manchester’s side all this while, Real Madrid, are already jumping the gun and they appear to have set a presentation date for the wing-wizard: August 15.

Madrid are believed to have tabled a final bid of around €75 million for Ronaldo, but the final figure is likely to come closer to €85 million, with the English champions looking to milk the Spanish champions for everything they have.

A large chunk of Madrid’s money will come from the sale of Robinho to Chelsea, a transfer that is almost certain to materialize if Los Blancos get the green light from the Red Devils to move in for Ronaldo.

If the deal does go through, it is expected to be one of the most highly anticipated player presentations in history, overshadowing even that of David Beckham’s.

English Debate: Can United Win Without Strengthening?

Fergie's admission that Manchester United need more strikers casts serious doubts upon whether they will be able to retain their Premier League and Champions League titles this year

It is not a new situation for the defending champions to be in; the start of the 2007-08 season saw them in exactly the same position. They were ‘rescued’ by Cristiano Ronaldo’s phenomenal goalscoring exploits but to rely upon that to achieve glory once more is a dangerous game to play.

Undoubtedly, United possess one of the most skilful attacks in world football. In Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney, they have three exceptionally creative players. |But a striker who leads the line in much the same manner as Ruud van Nistelrooy would better enhance the forward line. That may result in a diminishing of Ronaldo’s goals but increase the overall total scored, a balance that Sir Alex would be seriously considering.

That it is an issue he is acutely aware of is clear by his public attempts to sign Dimitar Berbatov. A move for a similar striker should not be ruled out. A failure to sign anyone would leave the squad at the same level as last season whilst his closest rivals have sought to improve their squads.

With Real Madrid’s overtures being resisted by the club, retention of Ronaldo is crucial to any plans for success that Ferguson has for this season. Unlikely though it may seem, the player’s departure now would leave little time for a new signing to be integrated into the squad.

A relatively injury-free season last time around was Ferguson’s biggest ally. United’s first team by comparison to their closest rivals was fittest for the longest spells. That is not the reason they won the league – their consistency of performance produced the silverware – but it was a huge contributing factor. From his own experience, Ferguson knows the rarity of that aspect.

United’s real strength last season was the reliability of Ferdinand and Vidic, undoubtedly the strongest central defensive pairing in England, and their incredible home form. Whilst there is no reason to doubt that the defence can again hold firm, it would be nothing short of miraculous if they repeated as near perfect a home record as the English Premier League has ever seen.

There are two big threats to United this season. Chelsea may be reinvigorated under Luis Felipe Scholari’s regime. A more expansive game has been demanded by Roman Abramovich and if delivered in tandem with Mourinho’s parsimonious defence, they will be an extremely difficult team to beat. Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal squad is one year older. Forget the media talk that it is not strong enough to win the league; they came close enough last season for such dismissals to be folly.

Ferguson cannot afford to be complacent. He has an excellent starting eleven but scratch the surface and the squad is not as deep as the media lead us to believe. Ben Foster could potentially be a good replacement for van der Sar but defensively, United are weak in reserve; Brown, Silvestre and O’Shea are not high quality players but their weaknesses are covered by others in the first choice back four. In midfield, Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves provide definite strength in depth but question marks will start to emerge now as age catches up with Giggs and Scholes. Up front, Frazier Campbell did well with Hull last season but lacks experience at the highest level. Can United get through to the end of the season with those gaps in the squad and win silverware? Time will tell but the fates need to be on their side.
