In an interview last month, the Fifa president called for Manchester United to allow the Portuguese winger to join Real Madrid, should he wish to do so.

Blatter said the Red Devils should not hold the player against his will, even though he was under contract.

He now claims that he never referred to Ronaldo specifically as a slave, but refuses to withdraw his claims that modern footballers need greater protection.

"I have never said that Ronaldo is a slave," Blatter told reporters on Wednesday during a visit to Vietnam.

"But I said slavery with young people, youngsters that European clubs are trying to get 13, 14 and 15 years old boys and bring them to the big clubs. This is in my expression, this is modern slavery.

"I have never mentioned that for Ronaldo.

"But the press, they have distorted it.

"Ronaldo is not a slave."

Blatter now hopes that the ongoing transfer saga surrounding Ronaldo will reach a conclusion which satisfies both United and Real.

"They will solve this problem," he said.

"We have nothing to say, Fifa is not going to intervene, let it be as it is now."

Italy coach Lippi backs Man Utd over Ronaldo
Italy coach Marcello Lippi has backed Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's determination to block Cristiano Ronaldo's desired move to Real Madrid.
"The 100 million (euros offered) by Real is astonishing. But not everything can be bought," Lippi said in an interview in Saturday's La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I think it's right that a player is not authorised to have the last word always.
"Ferguson is stubborn. I think Ronaldo will stay at Manchester. It's the right decision from a technical point of view.
"However, Portugal's result at the European championships shows that not even Ronaldo can win a big tournament on his own."
Lippi reiterated his admiration for Ronaldo's Manchester United team mate, England striker Wayne Rooney.
"I'm in love with Rooney," he said. "It's beautiful to see him run after his defender until the (corner) flag. He's the prototype of the modern champion."
The 2006 World Cup winner added that he thought it was a shame Frank Lampard was not moving from Chelsea to Inter Milan.
He ranked the England international as one of the world's top four midfielders, along with AS Roma's Daniele de Rossi, AC Milan's Andrea Pirlo and Barcelona's Andres Iniesta.
He also had kind words for Barcelona's Argentina forward Lionel Messi, describing him as a "football genius".

Barca's Henry & Eto'o Alternatives To Berbatov, Arshavin & Robinho? - Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea & Man Utd All Linked

Barcelona pair Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o have both been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea the clubs they have been linked with.

With 30-year-old striker Henry reportedly a target for Manchester United if they fail to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham, along with rumours that he could make a shock return to former club Arsenal, according to reports in the British tabloids.

While 27-year-old Cameroon International Eto’o (left) has been linked with a move to Tottenham or Chelsea. However, Spurs may only move for Eto’o if an agreement can’t be reached for Euro 2008 star Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg, who remains White hart Lane boss Juande Ramos’ main transfer target.

Chelsea on the other hand could make a move for the prolific Eto’o if they fail to bring Robinho from Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge, with it believed that talks have stalled between the two parties, according to the BBC.

With the transfer window entering its final phase a lot of transfers are appearing to depend on the movement of other players, with the big clubs all sounding out possible alternative’s to their main targets.

Daniel Levy's moaning about the Old Trafford and Anfield approaches to Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane is a load of cockerel. Has he forgotten the Juande Ramos affair so soon?
You can always tell when it’s nearing curtain-up time on a new season. Everybody starts to get tetchy, arguments break out, excuses start gushing forth – “Don’t expect miracles, we’re not in the same money league as them!”

No matter how hard they work on their pre-season lines, managers and players forget the lot and come out with a few unscripted ad-libs intended to rough up the opposition. In some cases, of course, they’re not entirely unscripted.

But the best one of all is when one club accuses another club of “tapping up” a player. Now this has been going on for years and it’s never going to stop.

Every club in the Premier League have been accused at one time or another of “tapping up” players at other clubs. It’s never going to stop until somebody has the nerve to stand up and say: “A contract is a contract, is a contract, is a contract!”

The method is simple; it’s a simple “whisper in the ear” job between two agents, two players, an agent and a player, an agent and a manager, or any two from the whole mix. Agent or player lets it slip to a friend who happens to know the drinking pal of a journo and, hey presto, said rumour appears in print somewhere.

But I reckon Spurs have leapt to the top of the hypocrisy table by their straight-faced complaint that Manchester United and Liverpool are guilty of putting the tap on Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane to join them. Daniel Levy has even gone so far as to make an official complaint to the Premier League about these unscrupulous scoundrels.

This is the same Spurs, mind you, who sent a couple insurgent spies to Spain last year (while manager Martin Jol was in the throes of trying to get their season back on track) to “tap up” Juande Ramos in secret (behind the backs of Sevilla officials) to come to London and save the ailing cockerel.

It seems that even in Spain they understand the meaning of the pot calling the kettle black.

The president of Sevilla has gone so far as to accuse Spurs of “actions that amount to hypocrisy” in their back door attempt to lure Ramos to The Lane.

I quote (and this is a rough translation) from one of the Spanish newspapers I picked up this morning, the president as saying: ''They took our manager and now they accuse others of trying to take away their players. This was demonstrated by how they took Ramos from us.''

So perhaps Daniel Levy might have been better advised to check his own glasshouse before throwing that rock!
