Spanish Debate: Can Hleb Replace Ronaldinho?
Barcelona are officially moving for Arsenal's Aliaksandr Hleb. It's time to ask - can the Belarussian step in to fill the void on the left flank left by Ronaldinho? Ewan Macdonald weighs it up...

It's official that Barcelona are at least trying to land Hleb and offload Ronaldinho. Whether or not they manage to do so is another matter entirely, of course, but for now it's possible that the Belarussian ace lines up on the left in time for next season.

Indeed, his won't be the only new face in the lineup. Seydou Keita is likely to play in the middle for at least some of the campaign, and away from home he could well form something of a double pivot alongside Yaya Touré.

But it's Hleb whose arrival would perhaps make the most waves. After all, he'd most likely be slotting in on the left side of the attack - the slot vacated by Ronaldinho.

Differences

One thing is immediately obvious: this is not a like-for-like swap. Just as one may notice a subtle difference between Minsk in March and Porto Alegre in November, Hleb and Ronaldinho bring different attributes to the table.

The Brazilian, when not gracing the treatment table, has an inimitable style of play. A cynic would say that he isn't the most hard-working player on the pitch, but that isn't what he's there for: from his cubbyhole up front on the left, his off the ball work focuses around getting himself into good positions, as opposed to tracking back.

From there, he's just as liable to run - or more accurately dribble - at defences as he is to play the opportunistic ball into the box, and it is this that serves both as his trademark and his main source of attraction to the fans.

But above all else, he scores goals - not the most, but far more than Hleb. From a combination of set-pieces and breaking through the back line he has managed an average of 13.8 league goals a season for the blaugrana - even in the last campaign, which was by his standards poor, he hit 8 in 17 games.

Hleb didn't even manage that many in 89 appearances over the past three seasons - not that this is a bad thing, of course. It shows merely that he is different, not inferior. But this difference is paramount, and it's one that must be borne in mind when we think about how he'll fit into the side.

Benefits

Yet even those who remember the time when it was possible to describe Ronaldinho as the world's finest player could perhaps see the benefits of a changed approach.

It does seem odd to say it - after all, for all Ronaldinho's troubles over the past season (or two), his was still often a positive influence on the pitch. Barcelona all too often lacked cutting edge last season as they 'choked' in the final third - killer balls were not forthcoming, and the team lacked that little piece of Brazilian flair that could see them past the more obstinate, packed defences of La Liga. To replace 'Dinho with a non-box player, then, is of debatable wisdom.

But here's the thing: it just might work.

First of all, let's look at the obvious: personality. Hleb will presumably bring with him hunger to Camp Nou. Having sought to extricate himself from the Emirates, as opposed to being shoved out the door against his will, it's clear that he's looking for a new challenge. Ronaldinho could charitably be termed the same way. His time in Barcelona is up, and while he may have said within the past 24 hours that he's still under contract until 2010, he knows that his club have had enough and that he probably has as well.

And then there's style. Hleb, assuming he does take the vacant slot on the left, will be more amenable to tracking back than Ronaldinho, meaning that what is lost in terms of flair and invention can perhaps be compensated for with workrate. Additionally, in those matches in which Barcelona employ two attacking midfielders (which is to say most of them) he will have the likes of Andrés Iniesta in support, and their work on the overlap could prove invaluable.

Above all, it will give Lionel Messi, who will presumably line up on the right, the freedom to focus solely on inventive play; Hleb, assuming he's given the remit of crossing the pitch, can aid him by pulling defenders out of position, too. While Ronaldinho may once have been the lynchpin around whom all others must have worked, Messi now seems to be top dog, and Hleb could prove instrumental in making this happen.

This is all in an ideal world, of course, but it's not at all improbable that this move works out for all concerned - including Ronaldinho.

Emmanuel Adebayor has announced he will snub an offer from Milan to stay at Arsenal

Milan recently described the Togolese striker, who was the Premier League's second-highest scorer last season, as their only summer transfer target.

On Thursday Adebayor's agent said there was a "70 to 80 percent chance" that the player would swap the Emirates Stadium for the San Siro.

However, the 24-year-old said Arsenal were like "a family" to him and he was keen to help them win their first major silverware since the 2005 FA Cup.

"I am an Arsenal player and have three years left on my contract," he said.

"The most important thing for me is to keep on enjoying my football. I'm staying at Arsenal."
