The Reds will edge a step closer to retaining the Premier League title with victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday...

Form guide: A blank week has afforded the Reds a welcome rest since the pulsating victory over Arsenal, which stretched United's unbeaten run in the league to eight games. Sir Alex's men are now within two victories of a 17th championship crown. Blackburn, however, have been in indifferent form of late, winning just one of their last six league games, drawing three and losing two. They've won just two of the last six on their own patch, although they managed to hold Arsenal and Liverpool earlier in the season.

Ins and outs: Mark Hughes has the luxury of a fully-fit squad to select from. For United, Nemanja Vidic could return after missing the last three games with a knee injury, while Louis Saha (hamstring) and Nani (thigh) could both make the bench. Darren Fletcher (knee) is still out, but he is making good progress.

Star men: Time and again United have been thwarted by Brad Friedel, who seems to save his best performances for the Reds. Up front, Roque Santa Cruz has netted 19 goals this season, including four in his last five games and will need to be watched closely. In the Red corner, take your pick, but Vidic's return could be vital and Ronaldo and Rooney once again spearhead United's goal threat.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Michael Carrick have agreed new contracts with Manchester United.

England centre-back Ferdinand revealed on Friday he would be honoured to extend his stay with the Premier League leaders before the end of the season.

Fellow international Brown has put an end to speculation about his future by agreeing a new deal. Former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce tried to take one-club Brown on loan to St James' Park and Ferguson admitted he feared the versatile defender would leave.

However, Ferguson confirmed on Friday: "There's no other club for Wes Brown."

He added: "He's a Manchester United player. We were always quietly confident he would sign."

Brown was one of the lowest paid players on a basic of 30,000 per week plus 10,000 pounds for every game played. But he has clinched a four-year contract worth around 60,000 a week.

Ferguson added midfielder Carrick - signed for £18million in the summer of 2006 from Tottenham - had also agreed to put pen to paper on a new deal.

"It's good that the squad is staying together," said Ferguson.

Key defender Nemanja Vidic will make his Manchester United comeback against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday.

"It's good news," said Sir Alex Ferguson. "It's another player back (to add to the recent returns of Gary Neville and Mikael Silvestre) and will give us good options."

Former United striker Cruyff told DiarioSport: "There is not one camera allowed at training.

"Even if they lose three or four consecutive games, it would be impossible to talk about a crisis because Sir Alex Ferguson has control over everything. Any journalist who does not respect the rules is not allowed back to Old Trafford.

"This climate of stability, without allowing scandals, has allowed Ferguson to work comfortably for so many years."

Si inca ceva...

There was a time when Manchester United fans were mocked for their manager’s dealings in the transfer window. If the point had been about spending money, we could have handled it. But the accusation was that the manager had signed players unfit for United, and it stung all the more because they were right.

However, since summer 2005, every single player the gaffer has brought in has proven their worth as a valuable squad member. Fergie has a perfect record in transfers for the last 2 seasons, and yet no one seems to have pointed this out as a contributing reason for United’s success in the last 2 years.

Let’s take a look, shall we?

Summer 2005

Park Ji-Sung

The Korean Energizer bunny gives Fergie the option of resting his wingers for crucial games as well as cover for them in times of injury. Not worthy of a starting position if everyone is fit but a valuable squad member.

Ben Foster

Touted as a future England #1 and considered by Watford fans to be the reason they were promoted in the first place. As EVDS gets older, expect Foster to be a front-runner for his spot.

January 2006

Nemanja Vidic

He’ll fuckin’ murder you…nuff said.

Patrice Evra

Has the rare ability to turn critics into top fans. Along with Vidic, the final piece of the defensive puzzle that allowed United such a great defensive in the Premier League in the last 2 seasons.

Summer 2006

Michael Carrick

Expensive? Yes. Quality? Oh Yes. Critical to the 06/07 title? Hell Yes.

Summer 2007

Owen Hargreaves

Anyone with questions needs to go and see Hargo’s performances against Roma and the two goals he’s scored for United this season.

To put this into proper perspective - Hargo is EXACTLY the type of player Arsenal don’t buy - proven, experienced, quality, expensive, English - and EXACTLY the type of player the need to turn them from outside hopefuls to genuine contenders. Few players have the ability to give that much to a side - he’s a strong defender, a leader on the pitch, model professional off it, great at set pieces and can run up and down the wings all day if needed.

Nani

Not just one for the future but a player who has had a great impact this season as well. Has settled in quite quickly as well.

Anderson

A player with the arrogance to take on the best midfielders in the Premier League (Gerrard and Fabregas are his more famous victims, although young English stalwarts like Nigel Reo-Coker have felt the Anderson effect as well) and the outrageous talent to get the better of them.

Tomasz Kuszczak

Pole in Goal - quality backup keeper, solid whenever he’s been called upon. Not as good at commanding his box as EVDS or Foster, but good enough keeper to trust in the biggest of crunch matches.

Carlos Tevez

The Argie hobbit is United’s second-best striker and a quality player. He would improve any team he’d get into in the Premier League at the moment.

Manucho

Unknown quantity in the sense that he’s yet to play a competitive game for United, but according to all indications he is the 3rd / 4th striker United have been after ever since Smith and Rossi left and Saha proved that he couldn’t stay fit to save his own life. As squad players go, he seems to be good enough.

Verdict

11 players, 3 backups, 8 first-teamers (or potential future first-teamers). Fergie has rebuilt the squad in the last 3 years and he’s done it in style. Apart from Manucho (who still needs to play in the Prem to prove himself), every single player has been a good signing for United.

Fergie’s 10 for 10, with Manucho looking a sure hit as well (if he’s as good as Park (with better finishing, obviously) he’s good enough).

Looking at all this, 2 points are self-evident:

As long as United go after quality talent they’ll be able to get money for the transfers (that’s as far as I’ll go in mentioning the owners).

As long as Fergie is looking for strikers, we can be sure to get a quality player up front next season. Who that’s going to be is uncertain for now, but I’m sure we’ll have a good idea by June.

Hargreaves admits he may be injured for years

Owen Hargreaves last night revealed that his career continues to be blighted by a chronic knee injury.

The 27-year-old England midfielder has endured a stop-start debut season at Manchester United after arriving from Bayern Munich with a tendon injury.

Although Hargreaves has officially been "fit" since Christmas, he admitted the problem has still not cleared up. "It's something the doctors say I have to manage because when you get this problem it stays with you," said Hargreaves.

"It's the patella tendon and it's different to most injuries.

"If you break something, that's easy. The bone or the ligament will heal.

"But the tendon is more complicated. It has to burn itself out.

"Sometimes it takes a few months, sometimes a few years.

"There aren't a lot of answers."

Hargreaves — an £18m signing — made only his 18th United start on Wednesday and will be left sweating over his own place for the semi-final against Barcelona.

He added: "I'd like to play every game but it's not possible and you have to say 'Hats off' to the lads who have been in the team ahead of me."

Injury-plagued Gary Neville, who returned on Wednesday, can't wait for the Barca tie, saying: "We played two games against them in '99 and both were 3-3 and that's the type of game you'll get. I don't think defending will be a priority.

"We've matured a lot since two years ago and even last year we weren't quite ready.

"But this year there is a determination within the players to go all the way."
