Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has gained the approval of Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona.

The French great saw Hargreaves turn in a five-star performance in last night's 1-0 victory over Roma and when asked for a post-match comment, Cantona replied: "I like the No4."

The best human being on the pitch yesterday. 8)
Love to see you back, Owen.

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo heads a six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award.

The Portuguese international is expected to be a near-unanimous choice for the award but could face competition from Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, who has struck 29 goals in his debut season.

Torres is joined by his club captain Steven Gerrard, while Arsenal boast two nominees in Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Title-chasing Chelsea have no contenders, while the surprise package of the list is Portsmouth goalkeeper David James, currently enjoying the best form of his life aged 37.

Ronaldo, Torres and Fabregas are also among the nominees for the Young Player of the Year award, and are joined on the shortlist by Aston Villa pair Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor, along with Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

THE NOMINEES

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)

After making a mockery of the 'no end product' talk with 23 goals and 20 assists last season, the twinkle-toed Portuguese star has taken the art of the goalscoring winger to astonishing new heights with 37 goals in just 40 games. Match-winning performances in the Champions League have added further fuel to claims he is currently the best player on the planet, and he is the overwhelming favourite to retain the Player of the Year Award he picked up last season.

Fernando Torres (Liverpool)

You would forgive most players for being a little daunted if they were plucked from their boyhood club, moved to a foreign country for a £26 million fee, and told to follow in the footsteps of legends like Dalglish, Rush and Fowler. Not Torres, who has ignored talk of complicated cultural and tactical adjustments, focusing instead on the business of scoring goals, of which he now has 29. Undeniably world-class - not even Rafa Benitez dares drop him.

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

Torres might provide the sparks, but Gerrard remains Liverpool's heartbeat. It says much about the England midfielder's consistently high standards that this season will not go down as his best, despite him weighing in with 20 goals and countless telling interventions. Even when Rafa Benitez's side struggle, as they have this season, Gerrard's desire and commitment never dip. Reds fans would not have let anyone else take that decisive penalty against Arsenal on Tuesday.

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal)

Thierry Henry's departure to Barcelona last summer led many to speculate that Arsenal would drop out of the top four. Instead, Fabregas led them on an unlikely title challenge that has only faded in recent weeks. The young Spaniard's passing range and accuracy never fail to astound, and he possesses a flair for the big occasion, having scored crucial goals against Manchester United, Milan, Liverpool and Tottenham this season. Hard to believe he is still just 20.

Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal)

With critics doubting Arsenal's title credentials in the wake of the sale of all-time leading goalscorer Henry, the rangy Togolese forward stepped into the breach to fire the Gunners to the top of the table. His form has faded with Arsenal's title challenge, but some of his strikes this term - including sublime volleys at Spurs and Newcastle - will linger long in the memory.

David James (Portsmouth)

Maligned for large periods of his career after high-profile mistakes for both club and country, James has produced his most consistent season to date, earning himself an England recall in the process. 15 clean sheets have inspired Portsmouth's charge for European football, and with England's young pretenders failing to earn the trust of Fabio Capello, the man once nicknamed 'Calamity' looks set to start the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign as his country's number one.

GOOD NEWS BAIETI SI FETE..

Rio Ferdinand will be fit to face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, while Nemanja Vidic is on course to return against Blackburn next Saturday.

Ferdinand had to have three stitches in a cut on his right foot at half-time during Wednesday's 1-0 win over Roma. The injury was unrelated to the problem that forced him off against Middlesbrough last week. The good news is that the 29-year-old has suffered no further ill-effects from this latest complaint.

Vidic, Rio's central defensive partner, was forced off in the first half of the first leg against the Italian side in Rome ten days ago. He was given a two-three week recovery prognosis, and looks set to be back in double-quick time.

"Vidic is doing very well," said Sir Alex Ferguson. "He's not available for Sunday, but he should be back for Blackburn."

Nani, who has been suffering with a thigh problem, may struggle to play a part against Arsenal, but he will definitely be available to face Mark Hughes' side at Ewood Park.

Elsewhere, Gary Neville is in contention for the first-team after his cameo appearance on Wednesday. But Sir Alex admits competition for places is tough with "players playing well in defence". He added: "Nevertheless, it's great to have him back."

United's only other injury concerns - Darren Fletcher (knee) and Louis Saha (hamstring) - are doing well in their recovery and will both be back before the end of the season.

MORE GOOD NEWS:
Darren Fletcher picked up a knee ligament injury while away on international duty and was expected to miss six weeks. However, he could be back for our Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona.

At that time Fergie blasted the international friendlies, calling them futile and pointless. His opinion has surely not changed but he's happily looking forward to having another option.

'We're looking forward to it (the Barcelona game), and hopefully by the time of the game we'll have a fully-fit squad to give us a chance,' he said.

'We're carrying one or two injuries that's making us change things around too many times at the moment.

'But Fletcher, Vidic and Nani are on their way back, while Saha has started training with us this week.

'So there are a lot of plusses.'

Win or bust at Man Utd - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits his side's whole season now hinges on beating Manchester United on Sunday after their Champions League exit.

"It will be the greatest achievement of my career to win the Premier League now because we are swimming against the stream at the moment," said Wenger.

"For us the game on Sunday is the game of the season. If we do not win this game we have no chance.

"We will fight until the last second of the championship."

The Gunners are in third place, six points behind United and three adrift of Chelsea, who play Wigan Athletic on Monday.

"It depends on what happens on Sunday," added the Arsenal boss.

"If we win then we can win the title and that's what is important for us to focus on.

"What is at stake on Sunday is the work of a whole year. If we go there and don't believe in ourselves then it is over.

"But do you really think that we will go to Manchester United thinking that our season is over? That would be ridiculous."

Arsenal would close the gap on United to three points with a victory at Old Trafford, while Ferguson's team would still have to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

"We have worked extremely hard since the first day of the season against all the odds," said Wenger.

"We will fight until the last second of the championship, especially on Sunday. If we win on Sunday then realistically we can win the title."

Arsenal have lost the likes of Abou Diaby, Denilson, Tomas Rosicky and Robin van Persie to injury this season.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes such setbacks have damaged Arsenal's title bid, with the London club having won just one of their last seven Premier League fixtures.

"Arsenal have had injuries," said Ferguson. "You can't win games consistently without your best team.

"You just can't do it, not at the level we're at. You can't get the best results without your best players.

"I think it is Arsenal's injuries in the second half of the season that has made it difficult to rest players."

Should United beat the Gunners on Sunday they will move nine points clear of Wenger's men and all but ensure Arsenal's season, which began so promisingly, ends trophyless.

Arsenal's dreams of lifting the European Cup were dashed on Tuesday when they were knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool in a thrilling European encounter.

United defeated Roma to seal a place in the last four of the Champions League - but in their previous Premier League fixture they drew 2-2 at Middlesbrough, dropping two points.

"It's hard to recover from these things," said Ferguson of Arsenal's defeat to Liverpool.

"If we beat them, it makes it difficult for them, no question. It's difficult anyway because they're six points behind us and three points behind Chelsea.

"With five games to go there's not a lot of leeway and they can't afford to drop anything really.

"But we have got to look at ourselves and make sure we keep motoring.

"Every game is a must-win now. We dropped two points last week and we need to win our games, it's as simple as that."

But Ferguson is unhappy with the scheduling of the fixtures over the final weeks of the season.

Chelsea play Everton four days after Wigan - and Blues boss Avram Grant has already expressed his displeasure.

But Ferguson countered: "They've got a good rest for Monday and then three days later they've got Everton away and then they've got a five-day break before they play Liverpool (in the Champions League).

"Then they've got a four-day break before they play us in the league game. Our schedule is a bit more congested."

United play Barcelona twice and Chelsea in the space of seven days.

Man Utd v Arsenal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will face Arsenal despite needing three stitches in his foot.

Patrice Evra could return after a knock while Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are both expected to start after being on the bench against Roma.

Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini has been ruled out for three weeks with an ankle problem and will be replaced in the starting line-up by Gilberto.

Robin van Persie could start after his substitute appearance at Liverpool.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man Utd from: Van der Sar, Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Evra, 0'Shea, Ronaldo, Scholes, Anderson, Hargreaves, Carrick, Giggs, Park, Rooney, Tevez, Kuszczak, Foster, Pique, Welbeck.

Arsenal (from): Almunia, Toure, Gallas, Senderos, Clichy, Eboue, Fabregas, Hleb, Van Persie, Adebayor, Lehmann, Song, Gilberto, Hoyte, Bendtner, Walcott, Diaby.

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Manchester United need 13 points from the five remaining matches to retain their Premier League title. If they beat title rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 26 April, just 10 points would be required to achieve back-to-back titles for the fifth time in the Premier League era.

United go into this clash thrilled to have qualified for the Champions League semi-finals, while Arsenal are smarting from Tuesday's defeat to Liverpool which ended their Champions League dreams, and leaves the Premier League as their only remaining hope of avoiding a third successive trophy-less season.

This is a must-win game for Arsenal, who would close the gap to three points on United at the summit with victory, but the Londoners have only managed one win in seven league outings, while United are unbeaten in seven, and have won the last three at Old Trafford with an aggregate of 9-0.

Sir Alex Ferguson, comes up against his Arsenal opposite number Arsene Wenger for the 36th time. Of the 35 previous encounters United have won 12, Arsenal 13. Eight of the 10 other games finished level and two were decided on penalty shoot-outs; United won the 2003 Community Shield, and Arsenal the 2005 FA Cup final.

Arsenal have proved United's trickiest opponents since Sir Alex took over in November 1986. The Londoners have won 13 games and amassed 53 points against the Red Devils, more than any other club over that period.

In the Premier League there's nothing to chose between Wenger and Ferguson at eight wins a piece, and seven draws, but the Scot has the edge on home soil with five wins to three, and three draws.

These clubs are meeting for the first time since United totally dominated in a 4-0 win FA Cup fifth round win at Old Trafford on 16 February. But Arsenal go to the Theatre of Dreams in search of back-to-back victories, having won last season's corresponding fixture. However United are hunting a 50th home league victory over the North London giants.
