Manchester United took a giant stride towards the Champions League semi-finals with a clinical victory against AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Cristiano Ronaldo headed home his 36th goal of the season from Paul Scholes' cross six minutes before half-time.

Roma rallied, with Christian Panucci missing from close range and Edwin van der Sar saving brilliantly from Mirko Vucinic's 61st-minute header.

But Rooney bundled home United's crucial second five minutes later.

The result leaves United clear favourites to reach a likely semi-final showdown against Barcelona.

Sir Alex Ferguson made three changes from the side that won so emphatically against Aston Villa on Saturday - Van der Sar, Anderson and Ji-Sung Park replacing Tomasz Kuszczak, Ryan Giggs and Carlos Tevez.

Vucinic led the Roma attack in place of injured captain Francesco Totti, and he was a lively figure in a first 45 minutes that saw United relatively untroubled.

Panucci posed an early threat when he rose to meet David Pizarro's corner but headed over the top.

Vucinic was just off target before United suffered a blow after 29 minutes when Nemanja Vidic was carried off after landing awkwardly on his knee in an aerial challenge.

However, United reacted well to the setback and took the lead with a priceless away goal from Ronaldo six minutes before the interval.

Scholes sat up an inviting cross and Ronaldo rose superbly to power a downward header past Doni. The Portuguese winger took a heavy bang to the head in scoring, but recovered quickly to carry on.

Vucinic could have levelled two minutes later, but he jabbed a finish across the face of goal after escaping the attentions of the United defence.

Roma set about United with intent after the break, Max Tonetto sending a powerful drive just wide and Panucci wasting their best chance of the night when he blasted over from close range after United failed to deal with Vucinic's long throw.

It prompted a response from Ferguson after 55 minutes as Owen Hargreaves was sent on for the disappointing Anderson, who was also suffering a hamstring problem.

Roma were testing United's resolve, and just after the hour Van der Sar needed to produce a stunning reflex save to turn away Vucinic's flicked header.

But United survived the siege to break out and deliver a stunning counter-punch to double their advantage.

Park did well to head Wes Brown's long cross into the danger area and when Doni failed to collect, Rooney bundled home from inside the six-yard box.

Roma, understandably, looked demoralised and United came within inches of adding a third and effectively putting the tie to bed late on.

First Ronaldo fired a low shot against an upright before Michael Carrick was just inches off-target from 20 yards as United gathered momentum.

Then, with seconds remaining, Ronaldo almost crowned the perfect in night in spectacular fashion when he volleyed just over from substitute Tevez's cross.

Semis within grasp says Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident his Manchester United side can secure a Champions League semi-final spot after a 2-0 first-leg last-eight win at Roma.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney each scored vital away goals to put United in pole position ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford on 9 April.

"We can't take anything for granted, but we definitely feel like we can reach the semi-finals," said Ferguson.

"It was a marvellous result. We showed discipline and composure on the ball."

The Scot said United would have to be wary of the return of Roma captain and talisman Francesco Totti next Wednesday.

"We know Totti's abilities," Ferguson said. "He's an inspirational figure for Roma, but we hope Old Trafford on a European night will be ready for us."

Ronaldo's header broke the deadlock for the visitors in Rome on Tuesday, and the Portuguese has now taken his tally to 36 for the season, with eight in the Champions League.

"Ronaldo's goal changed the game for us. It was a fantastic header," said Ferguson.

"His spring and courage to go in front of the defender surprised the Roma player.

"It was a centre forward's header - it reminded me of myself."

Roma had a spell just after the break when they peppered the United goal, only to be undone by a mixture of keeper Edwin van der Sar's quality and a lack of ruthless finishing.

Ferguson added: "We rode our luck in the first 15 minutes of the second half. You get those breaks sometimes - and we did."

United did suffer the setback of having central defender Nemanja Vidic falling awkwardly and having to go off with a knee injury after 33 minutes.

"I pray it is not serious, because he is such an integral part of our team," said Ferguson.

"We think it might just be a nerve injury but we can't be sure at this moment."

Roma beat Real Madrid 2-1 away from home in the last round and coach Luciano Spalletti is hoping that result will give his side confidence heading into the return leg.

"They were lucky on their scoring chances," he said. "They have players of very high quality.

"But we've got to react after what happened and reverse the situation. We've scored twice away before in the Champions League."

There was no repeat of the violent scenes that have marred clashes between the clubs in recent games, and Ferguson said: "That is a bonus and what we wanted to happen.

"Roma and ourselves have worked hard to make sure there would be no incidents."

Man Utd await Vidic scan verdict

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic will have a scan on his knee on Wednesday after being carried off in the 2-0 Champions League win over Roma.

Centre-back Vidic fell awkwardly during the first half in the Stadio Olimpico and despite sustained treatment had to be replaced by John O'Shea.

"I pray it's not serious because he is such an integral part of our team," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"It might just be a nerve injury but we can't be sure at this moment."

Vidic has formed a superb partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the United defence and any lengthy absence would be a huge blow as they target a Premier League and Champions League double.

O'Shea stepped in alongside Ferdinand in Rome, while Mikael Silvestre returned to the senior squad for the first time since September after recovering from a knee ligament injury.

Edwin van der Sar: Made one crucial save from Vucinic's header and he was confident throughout. 7

Wes Brown: Sometimes negligent a bit, he wasn't at his best but nullified the threat of Mancini. 6

Rio Ferdinand: Though he's been lauded as the man of the match, I think he was uncertain in the first half, looked shaky and committed some mistakes. In the second half, he was faultless though. 7

Nemanja Vidic: Absolutely superb - until he had to be substituted due to injury with only 30 minutes gone. 7

Patrice Evra: The usual assured performance. Taddei was nowhere to be seen and his awareness meant that nobody got behind him. 7

Paul Scholes: Brilliant. I thought he should not start - how very wrong I was. His range of passing was vital in our possession play and he provided the assist for Ronaldo with a sweet cross. 8

Michael Carrick: Has a hugely understated role which he performed to perfection yesterday. Wonderfully disciplined in defence, precise and sharp in passing. Should have scored. 8

Wayne Rooney: Showed admirable patience and discipline on the left, occasionally wandering inside and creating havoc as was demonstrated at the first goal. His second was a poacher's goal and he rarely scores one of those. Should have scored another and was vital to our defensive set-up and in keeping the ball so effectively. 8

John O'Shea: Replaced Vidic and, surprisingly, played at the centre - surprisingly well. In fact, he was faultless. 7

Owen Hargreaves: His introduction simply killed Roma, they didn't have a really threatening attack afterwards. Huge work on the right side of midfield. 7

Carlos Tevez: Apart from a scuffed shot, not much impact in the 10 minutes he got. 6
