Why Manchester United will never see the real Wayne Rooney

He's not the same player who won the hearts of every Everton fan. Sir Alex Ferguson has changed him - and not necessarily for the better.

This week it was announced that the libel writ issued by Everton boss David Moyes, against Harper Collins (publishers of Wayne Rooney's autobiography My Story So Far), Wayne Rooney himself, and his ghost writer, Hunter Davies, has resulted in victory for the Toffees gaffer.

Moyes will receive up to £150,000 himself with Harper Collins footing the bill, which could be in excess of half a million pounds.

The controversial passage involves the suggestion that after Wayne Rooney told Moyes he wanted to move to Manchester United after the Roon-prostitute story broke, Moyes then hot-footed it to the Liverpool Echo and told them everything.

This has since been proven to be total fabricated tripe and I am glad that Moyes won his showdown with his former student Wayne. But it saddens me that this could be Wayne Rooney’s final off-field dealings with his boyhood club.

Although this was a deserved victory for the Moyesiah, it is tinged with regret and disappointment; regret that my former idol and the manager of my team had to lock horns through litigation, and disappointment that Wayne Rooney’s employers are now Manchester United and not Everton.

No matter how much dirt emerges about Wayne Rooney, no matter how much the Scouse genius runs roughshod over his “once a Blue, always a Blue” oath of fealty with obnoxious and hypocritical badge kissing, I will always regard him as a footballing God.

To get over Rooney’s departure to Old Trafford, I treated the new version of him as almost a different player – and it wasn’t too hard. Sir Alex Ferguson has straitjacketed some of his wilder tendencies, turning his feral flair and atavistic aggression into the player he wanted him to be.

Watching Wayne now you see an awe-inspiring and excellent player. But I think that he could have become even better. The early Rooney - bursting past defenders, ruthlessly direct and blinkered, known to taunt defenders by putting his hands on his hips in mock boredom, who like a belligerent matchmaker never ceased introducing the ball to the back of the net – won’t be seen at Old Trafford.

Say what you want about your Wayne, but OUR Wayne had it all and in many ways was uncoachable. The glorious trajectory predicted by many hasn’t quite panned out, and although Rooney is the jewel in England’s crown he is overshadowed by others such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kaka.

Sir Alex got it very right when trying to coach out Cristiano Ronaldo’s showboating flair, but he got it wrong with Wayne, as his direct early self was more akin to the Brazilian Ronaldo at Barcelona – selfish, but only as any good single-minded striker has to be.

Manchester United’s millions bought a star, but by separating him from his boyhood club they never got the legend.

A statement:

“Fabio Capello has confirmed that Rio Ferdinand will captain England against France in Paris. Capello has confirmed this continues his policy of rotating the captaincy between players in the friendly matches before confirming a permanent captain for the World Cup qualifying games.”

So Ferdinand will be captaining a side that includes Terry, Gerrard, as well as possibly Beckham and Owen. All four have led England at one time or the other ahead of Ferdinand, and it is a matter of pride to see the captaincy return to Manchester United, even if it is only for one game (no other United player in the squad - not even Rooney - would be in with a shot at captaincy come summer time).

Congratulations Rio - the press will roll out that drug ban story as if that still matters today, don’t listen to them. You deserve the captaincy

Manchester United captain Gary Neville has conceded that his return to first-team action may have to wait until next season.

The 33-year-old has been out of action for more than a year after picking up an ankle injury against Bolton Wanderers last March.

This has since been complicated by a number of problems during several attempted first-team comebacks, although he has recently been involved in several consecutive reserves matches.

"I've played three times for the reserves since the turn of the year and this is the longest run I've been on in terms of training and playing games," Neville told the club's official radio station.

"It's going to take time for me to get back to full match sharpness after being out for so long.

"I'm probably a little bit away from first-team sharpness but the only way I'll get that is by continuing to train with the first team."

Brazilian midfielder Anderson could already lay claim to an unforgettable debut season. But, as he told United Review, there's more he can do to make it even better...

How would you sum up your first season at Old Trafford?
I feel I’ve improved my performances both in matches and in training. At first, it took me time to get used to the way things work at United, but from then on I’ve just tried to improve step-by-step and give my best for the team. I’m very happy with everything about my life at Old Trafford.

Which do you feel has been your best performance so far?
If I had to pick one I’d say the 4-0 win over Wigan [in October]. It was only my fifth appearance for the club and I came on after [Nemanja] Vidic got injured. It was a great win for the team and I felt I was the best player on the pitch that day [laughs]!

You’re a big favourite with the fans already, does that mean a lot to you?
I love it – we all sing each other’s songs in the dressing room when we’re joking around. I find it difficult to describe how it feels to hear the fans sing my name – it’s amazing. It gives me extra strength on the pitch and makes me want to do my best to repay the fans for the fantastic support they have shown me since I joined. They’ve all made me feel very welcome.

The words of the song describe you as a midfield magician and we’ve seen you play in a number of midfield positions – where do you feel your best position is?
I don’t have a preference, to be honest. I just want to play in as many games as possible. Even if I have to play in goal, I’ll do it! I’ve enjoyed every match I’ve been involved in this season and the different positions I’ve taken up. In the long term, I’m sure themanager will play me wherever
he feels I will be most effective.

Are you pleased to have avoided Liverpool in the Champions League draw and how much are you looking forward to facing Roma again?
To be honest I didn’t really have a preference as to who we were drawn with in the quarter-finals because at this stage of the competition every game is a tough one, no matter who you play. It’ll be a little strange to play Roma again so soon after the group matches, but I’m really looking forward to the tie. We all want to win the trophy and we know we’ll have to fight very hard to do that. But we have a great chance.

Aside from helping the team win trophies, presumably you’re looking to add goals to your game sometime soon…
I’m literally praying for goals [laughs]! I’m hopeful that when I start scoring I will score some important goals in important games. I’ve certainly got some good celebrations planned!

The fixture schedule is going to be very busy between now and the end of the season – are you looking forward to the challenge?
It’s a beautiful thing to be involved in a finale to a season such as this one. We’re in a good position in the Premier League and the Champions League and we are focused on winning both trophies. Do I get nervous? [Puts on his sunglasses and reclines in his chair, grinning] No, never. I’m always happy! And I hope I will be even happier come the end of the season.
