FERGIE REVEALS UNITED BERBATOV BID

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson fully expects to prise striker Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham by the end of the summer.

Ferguson has revealed the Barclays Premier League champions have already made an offer for the Bulgarian who scored 23 times for the Londoners last season.

The Scot is confident the former Bayer Leverkusen dangerman can add a new element to an already deadly United attack and finally turn attention away from the protracted Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga.

"We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through," Ferguson told The Sun.

"Berbatov has been impressive during a long time and would be a great addition to our attack."

While Ferguson admits there are still issues to be resolved with Spurs, including the price of the Ј20million-plus striker, he is happy to bide his time to ensure a successful pursuit.

"I think time will work for us more than against us," said Ferguson, who is with the United squad in South Africa on a pre-season tour.

"We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future."

RAMOS WON`T RULE OUT DEPARTURES

Juande Ramos has refused to rule out selling either Dimitar Berbatov or Robbie Keane, but believes that Tottenham will still be capable of challenging for the top four.

The Spanish coach is currently putting his players through their paces at a pre-season training camp in Oliva, just south of Valencia.

Berbatov has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United, with Barcelona also showing an interest, while Rafa Benitez has confirmed Liverpool's admiration for Keane.

Ramos told AS: "We will see what happens there, but we are talking about two very important players. For the moment they are with us, but whatever happens the idea is to have a great squad, with the potential to allow us to aim to improve on what we managed last season.

"We have to be realistic and see what we are starting with and who we are competing against. There are some big clubs who have spent a lot of money over many years and have a certain advantage, in fact they claim they want to sign some of our players.

"At Tottenham, we have had a clear philosophy regarding buying and selling for years. The idea is signing young players, promising and talented ones, and if important offers for older players are made, studying it to see what is the best for the club."

Tottenham's philosophy of signing young talent appear to be working this summer after the signings of Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos.

"We signed this player [Modric] before the Euros because we knew his price could rise, and we expect a lot from him," Ramos added.

"Our idea was the same when we signed Giovani. It's an attractive addition to the squad, done in a logical way, and with which we are hopeful we will compete against the best teams."

Ramos is accustomed to the media speculation surrounding which players he will sign and appears almost amused by the amount of stories.

"There are many rumours, but the majority are not true. We have a clear idea who we want and what other people say is not our problem. Since I came here we have been linked with 40 players and none have come," he added.

The Spaniard outlined his ambitions for the club and knows that breaking into the top four will be a tough task but it is one that he thinks is achievable.

"It is clear that there is a top four that include Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal and they are the ones that in recent seasons have taken the Champions League places and it is difficult to get into there," he continued.

"Our aim is to put an end to that top four in the Premier League and to push ourselves into those places, but we know it will be very difficult and there are other teams going for the same thing."

FERGIE MAKES FORAY INTO MARKET

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he has tabled a bid for a player, believed to be Dimitar Berbatov.

The Scot has been heavily linked with a move for the Bulgarian in recent weeks - and he has now confirmed he has made an offer for a player, though he refused to confirm it was for the Tottenham frontman.

Ferguson said: "We have made a bid for one player who would enhance us a great deal."

Tottenham are holding out for more cash but whether United are prepared to go beyond the Ј20million that has been mentioned is doubtful.

In any case, it would be handy for Spurs to get the money in quickly as manager Juande Ramos looks to rejig his own squad, with a big-money move for David Bentley in the offing.

Indeed Ramos confirmed earlier when asked about the futures of Berbatov and Robbie Keane: "We will see what happens there, but we are talking about two very important players. For the moment they are with us, but whatever happens the idea is to have a great squad, with the potential to allow us to aim to improve on what we managed last season."

The deal could move much closer over the next fortnight, although with Ferguson and chief executive David Gill both on the plane for United's tour of South Africa and Nigeria, it will be left to club solicitor Maurice Watkins, who found himself at the centre of the Carlos Tevez affair last summer, to deal with any on-the-spot issues.

"I have replaced Gerard Pique with Jonny Evans, so we are back to the same numbers," said Ferguson.

"If we got one more it would strengthen us even further."

Ferguson took charge of a 21-man party for the four-match tour, which opens against the Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town on Saturday.

Aside from Nani, Edwin van der Sar and Patrice Evra, who were all in action at Euro 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is recovering from an ankle operation, and Anderson, who played for Brazil in World Cup qualifying action, the main absentee was Owen Hargreaves.

Ferguson confirmed the tendonitis problem, which reared its head during last pre-season and bothered the England international until November when he eventually was forced to have injections to ease the problem, has resurfaced.

"It was apparent as soon as he came back to training," said the United boss.

"It is the same as last year. Some people get these things.

"Maybe restarting training on the firmish grounds brings it on or maybe it is just an inherent problem.

"We are trying to sort it out now with injections. That is what we did last November and it worked. Hopefully these work and by the time we come back from South Africa he should be okay."

Ferguson expects Hargreaves to link up with the other senior stars who remained in Manchester and could yet be involved in a reserve team outing at Oxford on July 26.

Certainly the United camp remain confident Hargreaves will be fit when they begin the defence of their Premier League crown against Newcastle in five weeks.

"Owen is not written off for the start of the season at all," he said. "I am sure he will be okay."

Louis Saha is having treatment for an injury in France, although it is doubtful the striker would have been involved anyway as he seems certain to leave Old Trafford during the current transfer window.

Gary Neville will take his customary position as captain, with Ferguson stating the England defender is now fully fit after virtually 16 months on the sidelines and ready to scrap with Wes Brown for the right-back berth that had been his own for so long.

"For Gary in particular this trip is very important," said Ferguson.

"He came through his 45 minutes at Aberdeen on Saturday with no problem at all, which is fantastic news.

"The great thing about Gary is that he has not missed a training session since the last time he came back in April.

"We could have played him at the end of the season but Wes was doing so well.

"His form was so good I didn't want to have doubts in my mind about picking him. Wes had played in every game, so we kept it like that.

"But now, a new season is about to start and Gary will get his chance."

After their trip to Cape Town, United will move on to Durban and Pretoria before a flying visit to Nigeria.

They will then return home to face Espanyol, Peterborough and Juventus in a packed five-day spell before the Community Shield clash with Portsmouth at Wembley on August 10.

Sir Alex Ferguson has said Cristiano Ronaldo will definitely stay at Manchester United after meeting him for talks.

Ferugson travelled to Lisbon on Monday for talks with Ronaldo, who had stated his desire to join Real Madrid, and claimed he persuaded the 23-year-old to remain at Old Trafford.

"The meeting went well - I think we both put across our points of view - where we stand and where the player stands," said Ferguson.

"I can say he'll be a Manchester United player next season. That's our stance - he won't be sold."

The Spanish side's determined pursuit of Ronaldo has dominated United's summer, with Real reportedly willing to pay a world record fee of £60m for his services.

United have been angered by the Liga champions' behaviour, and reported them to FIFA for 'tapping-up' based on their repeated, public statements of interest.

Ronaldo has said several times it is his "dream" to join Real, and last week agreed with FIFA president Sepp Blatter's claim that United's refusal to sell was tantamount to "modern slavery".

The Portuguese international is currently recovering from an ankle operation and is not expected to play again until October.

He scored 42 goals for United last season, helping them to scoop a Premier League and Champions League double.

Despite the club's increasing frustration, Ferguson claimed he was not worried as Ronaldo still has four years to run on his contract.

"It's not a difficult position. I was on my holiday and I was not going to interrupt my holiday, believe me," he said.

"I wasn't panicked because the player is under contract so the strength and the rights are with Manchester United.

"What we have done well is to say nothing. We've kept quiet on this matter and kept it private and what I said to Cristiano remains private. I did go and see him last week in Portugal and it was very amicable - there were no problems. That's where we are and we carry on."

The Scotsman also said he would resist the temptation to rush Ronaldo back into action, saying: "He's had an operation and he'll be out for three months."

"He's on crutches for the first four weeks, he'll be in rehabilitation for the next four and then the following four he'll be back into football training. The time mapped out is three months and we won't bring him back a day earlier than that.

"I think when players have operations we have a responsibility that the player comes back 100 per cent and we'll carry that out as we normally do.

"There'll be no risk-taking - we never take risks. Our goal is to always make sure that the player gets back 100 per cent and that will be the same in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo."

«Сегодняшние (18 июля - прим. переводчика) публичные комментарии тренера «Манчестер Юнайтед», в которых он заявил, что сделал предложение по Димитару и уверен в том, что в ближайшее время сделка состоится, и время работает на них, являются вопиющим примером высокомерия и воздействия на одного из наших игроков. Кроме того, они невероятно лицемерны учитывая его последние комментарии в отношении Кристиано Роналдо и мадридского «Реала».

«Это произошло после нескольких событий, начиная с прошлого лета, которые показали, что «Манчестер Юнайтед» действует в нарушение правил Премьер Лиги. Нападающий «Аякса» Хунтелаар на которого претендуют «МЮ», «Арсенал» и «Реал» может остаться в Амстердаме в следующем сезоне.

На официальном сайте «Аякса» размещено заявление в котором сказано, что новый тренер «Аякса» Марко ван Бастен назначил Клааса- Яна Хунтелаара капитаном команды на следующий сезон.

На сайте голландского клуба сказано, что, «капитанская повязка, доверенная Хунтелаару показывает, насколько важным игроком он будет для его нового тренера».

Невилл: Надеюсь, новый сезон будет удачнее

Капитан «Юнайтед» Гари Невилл надеется, что в новом сезоне счастливо избежит травм и вернется в основной состав команды.

Из-за череды травм Невилл сыграл всего 10 минут в сезоне 2007-08, выйдя на замену в матче с «Ромой», но выступая на пресс-конференции перед матчем с «Кайзер Чифс» Невилл заявил, что полон решимости вернуться в основной состав команды.

«Прошлый сезон для меня был крайне неудачным. Жаль, что мне не пришлось сыграть в столь удачном для команды сезоне»,- признался Гари.

«Игра в предсезонных матчах поможет мне набрать форму и надеюсь, что я смогу стать частью команды в еще одном успешном сезоне».

Невилл провел на поле 45 минут в игре с «Абердином» и хотя и говорит, что игры в ЮАР будут нелегкими.

«Матч на прошлой неделе, если хотите, был к этому первой ступенькой. Это был первый матч, который я провел в стартовом составе за более чем 12 месяцев. Я ожидаю, что субботняя игра против «Кайзер Чифс» будет значительно труднее. Если я попаду в состав, то с нетерпением жду выхода на поле».
