LAGOS (AFP) - Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has been awarded a special chieftancy title by the city of Lagos after he set the ball rolling for an annual tournament aimed at discovering fresh talent from the streets.

Ferdinand was given the Fiwagboye of Lagos title by the Oba of Lagos for creating time to visit the former Nigerian capital city during which he kicked off a street soccer tournament to be organised by Lagos State government.

"When Pele visited Nigeria over 30 years ago, I was one of the youngsters who welcomed him and his visit inspired me. We also believe that Ferdinand's visit will do likewise to some other youngsters now," said Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola, a Manchester United fan.

Ferdinand spent three days in Lagos as a special guest of the Lagos government who is organising a tournament that will attract several thousands of youngsters from across the state every year.

"I grew up in a tough neigbourhood but for football, I could easily have been lost to drugs or crime," said the Manchester United ace.

Man Utd report Real over Ronaldo

Real Madrid are in pursuit of United's Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United have lodged an official complaint with Fifa over Real Madrid's interest in signing their Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

The English champions have reacted angrily to the Spaniards' persistent courting of the 23-year-old.

"On 27 May, United made clear its intention to report Real Madrid if it continued to involve itself in the future of Ronaldo," a statement read.

"Unfortunately, Real Madrid has not kept its own counsel."

The statement went on: "The club feels it has no alternative but to make a formal complaint to the world governing body, which it has done today.

We have only just received the documents so we need some time to analyse them before we can make any decision

A Fifa spokesman added: "I can confirm that we have received an official request from Manchester United to look into the matter.

"We have only just received the documents so we need some time to analyse them before we can make any decision."

Article 18 of Fifa's regulations does not stipulate any possible sanction against Real, but does state that one club have to inform another in writing if they are to start negotiations with their player.

However, the rules do not specifically state that the club that owns the player have to give consent.

The two clubs have been engaged in a war of words over the last month - while comments attributed to the player himself have also fuelled the speculation.

Despite being under contract at Old Trafford until 2012, Ronaldo has refused to state publicly and unequivocally that his future lies with United.

Real coach Bernd Schuster claimed Ronaldo was their main summer transfer target, triggering United's initial threat of a complaint, while Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has accused the Spanish club of a "lack of morals" for allegedly unsettling the player.

United have sold David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Gabriel Heinze to Real in recent years, but Ferguson insisted the case of Ronaldo was different.

He said: "Yes, we sold them Van Nistelrooy and Beckham but we did that because we wanted to."

Former Manchester United star Eric Cantona said on Monday that the club would continue to grow from strength to strength, whether Ronaldo stayed or not.

"He is the best player in the world today and they are the biggest club in the world as they continue to win things," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

"I hope Ronaldo will stay at Old Trafford - but if he wants to leaves I am sure Manchester United will still win things.

"I am sure that Ferguson will try as hard as possible to keep him at Old Trafford. But if he wants to leave, United it will still be United."

Asked whether now was a suitable moment for the Portuguese winger to leave the club, Cantona added: "It is never the right time to leave Old Trafford."

Ronaldo himself was quoted last week as saying that he "would like to play for Real Madrid - but only if they are ready to pay what Manchester United ask of them".

But on Sunday, Ronaldo said he had not decided about his future and would not comment again until after the European Championship.

MANCHESTER United have lodged an official complaint with FIFA over Real Madrid's relentless pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo.

United warned the Spanish giants in a statement released on May 27 that they would consider reporting them unless they ended their public campaign to take the winger to the Bernabeu.

But with the level of speculation surrounding the Portugal international’s future having intensified since then, United have registered their anger with world football’s governing body over the 23-year-old.

“On 27 May, Manchester United made clear its intention to report Real Madrid to FIFA if it continued to involve itself in the future of Cristiano Ronaldo,” a statement read this afternoon.

“Unfortunately, Real Madrid has not kept its own counsel and the club feels it has no alternative but to make a formal complaint to the world governing body, which it has done today.

“The precise content and nature will remain confidential.”

Ronaldo, who is under contract with the Red Devils under 2012, has refused to publicly dispel rumours over his uncertain future at Old Trafford.

The player of the season, who starred in Portugal’s 2-0 opening Euro 2008 win over Turkey in Geneva on Saturday said: “I do not know what my future will be.

“After the Euros we will deal with it. Does the speculation affect me? What do you think? No. I feel good. But I’m now in a mindset that I cannot allow myself to worry about these things and for that reason I am calm.”

Ronaldo’s United captain, Rio Ferdinand, said: “Only Cristiano can answer the question why he would want to leave Old Trafford.

“As a footballer with United, and as a fan, I would like to think that he will be staying at a great club.”

MANCHESTER UNITED will tell Cristiano Ronaldo to be back for pre-season training — or be fined.

United want the Real Madrid target to report at their Carrington base three weeks after Portugal play their last match at Euro 2008.

If he is not, they will start disciplinary action against the Ј110,000-a-week ace.

Yesterday, United announced they have complained to FIFA over Real’s constant courting of their star winger.

United refuse to pander to Ronaldo’s claims he wants a move to Madrid.

As far as Fergie is concerned the player is under contract to United — and that is the way it stays.

On Sunday, he said: “I still don’t know where I will play, I have not decided yet. I will talk after the European Championships.”

But United say it is not his decision.

And they finally lost patience with Real when the Spaniards stated last week they were honoured Ronaldo wanted to play for them.

Papers: Real won't back down

Real Madrid to test United with £60m bid for Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United took the extraordinary step yesterday of reporting Real Madrid to Fifa, world football’s governing body, over their public pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo. Relations between two of the world’s biggest clubs seem certain to deteriorate further in the coming weeks. Real are preparing a world-record offer for the 23-year-old Portugal forward once his participation in the European Championship finals is over.
Sources in Madrid indicated last night that Real will offer United a fee in the region of £60 million for Ronaldo after Portugal are eliminated from the tournament, or, if they reach the final, after June 29.

A number of papers claim Cardiff City teenage sensation Aaron Ramsey will today sign for Arsenal. United and Everton had also agreed terms with Cardiff, however it now looks like the 17-year-old will head to London.

The Manchester Evening News report Eric Cantona is keen to take up the managerial post at Old Trafford after Sir Alex retires. Cantona said: “With United, I’ll win many things. United is the biggest club in the world and will win things generation after generation.”

Meanwhile, The Sun claim Everton are planning to pip United and Arsenal to £16m-rated Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Moutinho.
