Who Is Alexander Büttner?

Manchester United have apparently agreed to sign Alexander Büttner today from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, with De Gelderlander reporting a medical is scheduled to take place tomorrow. You may recognise the name because he was in the news last month after agreeing to join Southampton. However, a third party ownership issue stopped the transfer from taking place.
“It would be a very big disappointment if this did not happen,” Buttner told De Telegraaf at the time. “I’m in Southampton and everything is perfect. The club, the stadium and the reception really surprised me. Beautiful.”
He is a product of Ajax’s youth team but has been with Vitesse since 2008. His father played for De Graafschap, FC Twente, Vitesse and NEC. The good news is that he’s a left back, which is positive for the squad considering that Fabio is on loan with QPR. He scored 5 goals for his club last season and was named in Holland’s provisional 36-man squad for Euro 2012, although didn’t make the final selection.
“My biggest strength? I never give up,” he said. “I was born in a suburb in Doetinchem, called the Camp. My grandparents lived in a camp you know, like a trailer camp and the Romas? There is a different culture there. The vibe apparently was really cool. I was a real street urchin. A little rat. I was always playing football on the streets and it was a tough education, I can tell you. I was pretty good so I was invited to play with the older kids but they didn’t spare me. The trailer camps have a bad reputation in Holland. People think everybody grows weed there but it’s not true. Most camps don’t like to do any illegal and if something happens, it’s taken care of within the clan. We take care of our own problems, but we also defend and support each other. That loyalty is key. I am a trailer camp kid, and I’m proud of it.”
