Arteta's interview to Santi Cazorla

Arteta: Hey Santi, how’s life treating you here?

Santi: Well, man, well. Little by little, I’m adapting, with the whole moving in thing, which you know is not easy. But well, I’m very happy and in the team, happy.

A: You look very tired, you have shiners.

S: Because I have no curtains! It’s hard in the morning man! Sun is up very early.

A: Hahaha… Tell me about your first day in the club.

S: I only knew you and by talking on the phone. Remember when we talked? Everyone received me very well, which made everything easier and I’m still here, learning, like the first day.

A: When I came back everyone told me: “Hey, Santi doesn’t speak any english, does he?” And I told them: “Not even a little” And they said: “Because you tell him anything at all and he just laughes. He seems a good guy.” And even worse, the other day they told you: “Santi, we meet at 4” And you were like “Yes yes sure” And then they called me: “Where is Santi? We had agreed at 4” And I answered: “He’s gone to the hotel” And you were there, in the hotel.

S: I told them Ok but I didn’t understand a thing. So I just said “Yes yes sure” and when I got the chance I went back to the hotel. Hahahaha

A: I went through the same when I first arrived to Glasgow. No one spoke spanish, there was just a couple of italians. So I called my parents and told them “Mummy, daddy, please come and help me” And the whole family came. To be honest, that helped me a lot.

S: I have to learn english, and this is a very good opportunity, Mikel. Wherever you go you need a good english. And I’m taking this very seriously, and I’m even enjoying it. You know what I thought after the first matches? That watching english football in TV and playing it are very different things, there’s a huge difference. I love this league, it’s incredible. And to come from Spain to England is a very big step.

A: I went to France first and I got here when EPL wasn’t very popular in Spain. But Santi, you will have no problem in settling in because if there is a club that fits to your style of play, that’s Arsenal. Here things are done very similar to our country.

S: Yes, it’s nice here, the team plays good and I’ve had no problem in settling in. Specially with you in that new playrole you have, as a defensive mildfielder. And you have played in so many different positions! I’ve even seen you on the right wing. Is this new position more difficult for you?

A: We’ve had to renew ourself since Song’s departure. He used to have that role in the team and now that you’re here, the idea is to give you more protagonism, you want the ball so we look for you. The boss asks us to do that, to give you more freedom and to help you look for and create those spaces where you can be harmful. You look very comfortable and here are we all, playing tiki-taka…

S: Hey, it’s incredible, but here everyone knows what tiki-taka is!

A: We always joke around with that in the dressing room.

S: It’s true, always with that, it’s funny!

A: They all see how La Roja plays, how Barça plays and in the dressing room they’re always like “You and Santi, tiki-taka, tiki-taka; we’re going to call you DJ Tiki-Taka”! No but seriously now, we have a really good time playing. And the boss’ philosophy helps a lot. We went through hard times last year, but he never changed his idea of how he wanted play, how he wanted to win.

S: It’s very similar to what I had in Villarreal, and also in Málaga with Pellegrini. By the way, Mikel, would you have liked to play more time in Spain?

A: In life you take decisions in certain moments and it’s impossible not to think about them afterwards, and thinking what could have been if you had made a different one. But there’s another way to look at it: I’d have never thought that I would play in four or five different countries. The same for you, Santi. Who would have said you would end up at Arsenal? Ten years ago you’d have been like “London, Arsenal, where is that?”. We’re lucky that players who have come here before have given very good impressions, so now spanish players are really valued.

S: I had never thought of leaving Spain before, but now that I’ve taken this step I’m very glad I did. London is a great city, and it’s a tremendous experience.

A: It seems like this generation of emigrants is different from the ones before. In the past, players came for a last contract or by the hand of coaches who trusted them, like Rafa Benitez, but now in the EPL coaches look for quality players, who leave their country partly due to the econimic power this league has.

S: Clearly the football situation in Spain is very complicated right now. Lack of money, wages are not always collected, it’s not an equalizing league, with Barça and Madrid way ahead of the rest. There’s more expectations in the EPL, it’s more spectacular, it’s an amazing experience. And lots of spanish players have the hope and sometimes the chance of coming here, to a league where footballers are looked after, so I’m sure many more from our country will come.

A: Both leagues have come very close on the quality of players. But on organisation, the spanish one has stucked and the english one opens doors more than ever, and that’s very attractive for the spanish player. Many friends ask me how I’m doing and I always tell them “hey, come here, it’s a great experience, one-off”. What do you miss the most about our country?

S: The time, but that’s normal since I’m coming from Marbella… And I don’t take that as a problem. Also the food, of course, but I’m really happy here.

A: I remember when you came over to watch the Barça-Madrid match for the Supercopa, after spending a month living in a hotel, and your face when you saw the table with ham, potato omelettes, argentinian empanadas…

S: Because I spent a whole month in a hotel eating snacks and pasta!

A: I went through the same thing when I first got to London, spent two months in that hotel and it was madness!

S: Picture it, we arrived to your place with my girlfriend and we saw all those delicious things, uff! We ate it all!

A: We have a good time. Aswell as you in the National Team. What a team you have! I’d say I’m jealous of what you’ve achieved, but jealousy is not good, it is bad.

S: Seriously, I’m surprised you’ve never been called up for the NT. And you’ve have some incredible seasons with Everton and now you’re vice-captain of Arsenal. So strange you’ve never got a chance! There are many good players in that position, but I’m surprised.

A: I’ll never lose hopes, I’ll keep fighting to get that chance you’ve had of winning and enjoying with that squad that, as I’ve heard, makes a great group. I’m truly jealous, angry, of not having the chance to participate in that historic run. But I’m in a great moment now in my career and I hope to be called up someday.

S: Hopefully one day we’ll enjoy it together…

A: (Laughs) Pass on a good report for me.

S: I’ll try to make you come with me sometime.

A: That would be nice.

S: Here at Arsenal you’re a real leader. When I arrived, I was surprised by the level of respect everyone has towards you in the dressing room. But when I saw you moving with the group and in the pitch it’s obvious that everyone sees you as the captain almost. You’re a leader. I’m not at all, no one would ever listen to me! But when you talk, everyone does. You’re a model in the team and if we follow your example, we can fight for anything.

A: Hopefully! In the pitch I always thing about the rest of the team and I’m very aware that it has like 14 or 15 different nacionalities and everyone has a different culture. At the same time, everyone has to be treated in a particular way. It’s hard for groups like these to come together, but the squad is full of down-to-earth people, no one feels superior to anyone. Last year we had Van Persie, but even he was a normal guy. Everyone finds their place if the atmosphere is right.

S: As you know, there were bad things in Malaga last year, on the economic level and there was much uncertainty. They’ve fixed that and that’s their merit, now look at them, doing great in the Champions League and with great new incorporations. Saviola and Santa Cruz can bring very good things and give a spectacular start of the season in La Liga.

"Мне пришлось немного изменить свое восприятие - я знаю, что не могу ходить вперед так много, как раньше, и я вынужден жертвовать своими атакующими способностями. Но если это приносит пользу команде, я более чем счастлив делать это".
