Chelsea remove Robinho shirts from sale

Chelsea are no longer selling replica Robinho shirts after Real Madrid expressed their determination to keep hold of the winger.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for several weeks now, and Chelsea seemed to have secured his signature when they confidently advertised Robinho shirts for sale in their online megastore.

But search for Robinho's name this morning and the website reads: "Sorry, your search didn't return any results."

The club have now confirmed that a mistake was made. “Our online partner, Kitbag, always prepares in advance of any potential signings, and unfortunately it accidentally made its way onto the site but has now been removed," said a spokesman. "The club has always made it clear he [Robinho] is a major target and we hope to compete a deal soon.”

It is understood that Chelsea had provisionally agreed a £29 million fee with Real, as well as personal terms with the player, but the deal was dependent on the Spanish club finding a replacement.

After saying that they would not hold a player against his will, Real abruptly changed their stance yesterday. “The coach and the sports director want the player to stay and I am sure he will,” said president Ramon Calderon. “Our squad is complete and it is impossible for us to have one better than the one we have.”

Sporting director Predrag Mijatovic added: “Robinho still has two years left on his contract. Therefore he is our player for the next two seasons, so you can draw your own conclusions from that.”

Chelsea have allowed Shaun Wright-Phillips to return to Manchester City, a move which was widely seen as paving the way for Robinho's arrival.

However, with Real having lost face over Cristiano Ronaldo, it appears they are unwilling to have their hand forced by Robinho. Rafael van der Vaart, the Holland midfielder, has been Real's only major signing this summer.

David Villa, the Spain forward, was the subject of interest from Real this month but has since signed an improved contract to remain with Valencia.

With Madrid short on forward options but with plenty of wide talent, it could be the case that they seek a striker instead of a winger to compensate for the loss of the Brazilian.

Thus Didier Drogba, who had earlier entertained the notion of a move away from Stamford Bridge, could be on his way to the Spanish capital.

It is thought that Madrid will put to Chelsea the idea of the Blues' paying €25m and the Ivorian in exchange for Robinho, whom they annoucned was a major target on Wednesday.

Indeed, MD is confident that, even should Drogba stay put, Robinho will still make it to the Bridge before the transfer window slams shut after the weekend.

Drogba, 30, may provide competition to Ruud van Nistelrooy and Raúl in what would be an "old but gold" forward line.

Meanwhile Robinho is highly regarded by Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, as well as chief executive Peter Kenyon and midfielder Frank Lampard.

Robinho focused on Blues move

Real Madrid forward Robinho insists that he still hopes to join Premier League side Chelsea, revealing that negotiations are ongoing.

With just three days remaining until the end of the transfer window there is still no definitive resolution to the Brazil international's possible move to Stamford Bridge.

Reports in the Spanish press suggest the 24-year-old will stay at the Bernabeu, with Madrid rejecting a 30million euro bid.

But Chelsea are equally as confident he will move to Stamford Bridge and started advertising replica Robinho shirts for sale on their official online store on Thursday.

However, the man himself claims the last word on the issue has not yet been heard.

"I have a contract with Real Madrid now, but we are still negotiating with Chelsea," Robinho told globoesporte.

Media reports also claimed that Robinho is set to apologise to Real and their fans for publicly declaring his desire to leave the reigning two-time Primera Liga champions to join compatriot Luiz Felipe Scolari - the new Chelsea coach.

However, the star has rubbished any such notion.

"A lot of things are being published and they are not the truth," added Robinho. "It is not true that I said that I was going to apologise to the press.

"We are working to seal my future, nothing else."

Robinho's team-mate Royston Drenthe agrees with the Brazilian that he has nothing to apologise for.

"The relationship between us and him is the same as always," he said. "We form a team and he forms part of the team, for that reason the relationship is the same.

"What Robinho does is a personal question.

"He has no reason to apologise. It is a decision between him and the club. No player has any reason to comment on it."
