Arsenal teammates have demanded better on-field leadership from captain William Gallas.
The Mirror says Gunners' players told the Frenchman his crazy antics after Saturday's game at Birmingham were "not the behaviour of a captain". The Gunners skipper lost the plot after his side suffered a major setback to their Premier League title hopes. Gallas broke down in tears, sulked on the pitch and even went up the other end as Birmingham's James McFadden netted a last minute penalty.

And it's revealed that Gallas carried on his behaviour in the dressing room and had to be calmed down by several senior players, some of whom questioned his leadership at St Andrews.

Gallas did not stop ranting, raving and shouting as he showed signs of cracking up. Gilberto, Mathieu Flamini and Emmanuel Adebayor were among the players to step in and calm down the French defender.

Arsenal star could leave for nothing after contract talks stall

Arsenal star Mathieu Flamini could quit the club for nothing this summer and join Juventus after contract talks broke down.

Arsenal are desperate to hold onto the midfielder and are hopeful he will sign a five-year £45,000 a week deal.

Flamini, 23, has been discussing a new deal for a month but has still to sign and Arsenal are worried another club have made a better offer.

Ваш вариант Брауна. :)
Маловато 45 тыщ за то, что он сейчас делает для Арса. :)
Ничего, Венгер найдёт молодого неизвестно не хуже и будет платить 20 тыщ.

Footballers Behaving Badly
Last weekend’s football was marred by a couple of unsavoury incidents, that, although they’ve kept us talking, most of us would rather not have witnessed. Some players have forgotten how to behave.

Birmingham’s Seb Larsson blasted Arsene Wenger and Arsenal for being sore losers after the way the Gunners reacted following Saturday’s 2-2 draw.

He’s been widely shouted down by the legions of Arsenal fans who read this website, but the fact is he is right.  He should know – he spent several years there.  Larsson just picked the wrong game to voice his criticism.

Let’s get a few things straight: Arsenal can play some of the most attractive football this world has ever seen.  They are a quality side, both individually and as a unit, and there appears to be a great bond between team mates.  Good luck to them in their various title quests.  But they are terrible losers.

Against Birmingham they can hardly be blamed: who wouldn’t have been angered and affected terribly having seen a colleague and friend scythed down like that and in such distress?  We all would.  That they were bad tempered for the remainder of Saturday’s game is understandable.  Wenger apologised for his over-the-top remarks about Martin Taylor later that evening: that spat should be left to lie.

But as great a boss as Wenger is, he hasn’t instilled a sense of discipline in his side either now or in the days of Vieira.  I’m not talking about the Birmingham game; I’m talking about at Old Trafford the week before and on numerous previous occasions.

Gallas and company’s shameless kicking of Nani in the 4-0 loss at Manchester United and Emmanuel Eboué’s apparent refusal to leave the field when issued with the red card demonstrated poor sportsmanship.  Was I shocked?  No, because we see this from Arsenal every time they find themselves in a battle.

The Gunners appear to have grudge rivalries with teams up and down the country: besides the usual top sides we’ve seen spats with Blackburn, Bolton, Sheffield United and Everton to name a few.  Close games or lost games inevitably degenerate into mass brawls or other unsightly incidents.

Last season’s Carling Cup final red card frenzy is a case in point, while Eboué hardly endeared himself to the Kop in an FA Cup game at Anfield last season.  Having been fouled without being awarded a free-kick, he sprinted 20 yards to attract the referee’s attention before writhing around in agony.

Twenty yards is nothing to Kolo Touré or Jens Lehmann – they’ll run the length of the pitch to argue.  Hell, against Spurs Adebayor and Bendtner even rounded on each other!  Wenger, too, has in the past been a poor sportsman in defeat, refusing to shake managers’ hands (a tiff with then West Ham boss Alan Pardew springs to mind).

Arsenal are a terrific side, but I do feel that in these recent years of United and Chelsea domination, and with their own beautiful football, the Gunners would have more neutrals on their side in this year’s title race were they not such rotten losers.  Football may be about winning, but gentlemen must learn to accept defeat with good grace.

To single out Arsenal is unfair, however, and though some clubs are worse than others most have their guilty elements.  Frank Lampard in particular may wish to examine more closely his own team before bemoaning youngsters’ lack of respect these days.

How many times did we watch José Mourinho stand before the cameras after a Chelsea defeat and belligerently claim that “the best team lost”?  His refusal to wish Liverpool good luck in the 2006 FA Cup final after the Blues’ semi-final defeat, instead menacingly wishing them well for a Champions League qualifying fixture the following season, showed an absence of class.  Avram Grant tows a similar line, as we saw on Sunday, and the debacle involving Chelsea players at full-time was a disgrace.

AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini spoke in the week of his admiration for English fair play.  Seeing Blues players charging after the ref as the whistle was blown probably reminded the veteran defender of home.  One also wonders what disciplinarian Fabio Capello thought, watching from the Wembley box as John Terry hounded the officials.  England captain material?  Capello is unlikely to ever see Steven Gerrard do the same.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.  Last night at Eastlands I saw something that really impressed me, that reinforced my belief that there are still gentlemen in our game.  Deep into stoppage time, a frustrated Martin Petrov kicked out at Everton’s Leon Osman.  It was petulant, but Osman neither rolled around on the floor, nor reacted, nor rushed to the referee to demand action.

As Petrov was shown the red card, Everton skipper Phil Neville put his hands to his head in disbelief – he didn’t want to see opponents dismissed for things like that.  Well done Messrs Osman and Neville!  Can you imagine the same happening if the duo in question had been Rosicky and Touré, or Drogba and Terry?

Unfortunately, far more kids will have seen the antics at Old Trafford and Wembley than the good sportsmanship of last night, such is the spotlight and interest in our biggest four clubs.  These sides, above all others, are role models for millions of would-be footballers.  Lampard wants the youngsters cleaning boots.  I say he and his team should set a better example first.

Chris Williams, goal.com
