Robin van Persie is looking forward to playing alongside Lukas Podolski at Arsenal next season and believes the striker will bring a winning mentality.

"He's a really good player," Van Persie told Sky Sports News. "I know that he has played 91, 92 times games for Germany, which says it all. He is a really good player, an experienced player and he has been in the game at the highest level for more than eight years. He had a little trip to Munich a couple of years ago and then came back to Cologne. He is a great player and a great character to have around because he's a winner. When we played against Cologne in pre-season you could see that he's a winner. Even though it was a friendly he was doing absolutely everything to win and we are very happy that he's coming to Arsenal."

Arsenal turn down Adams for assistant

Arsenal have turned down the chance to appoint Tony Adams as Assistant Manager.

wearethenorthbank.com understands that the Arsenal legend made it clear to his former club that he would like to be considered for the job.

He has visited Arsenal’s training ground, London Colney, on a number of occasions in the past few weeks as well as being at the Emirates for the recent Chelsea match. Arsenal have decided not to take up on their former captain’s application as it’s believed that they want to employ from within the club.

Steve Bould – Adams’ centre half partner for the majority of his career – is the favourite to take over from Pat Rice – who is to retire due to knee problems – having impressed, coaching the Youth team for the past 11 years. Reserve team coach, Neil Banfield, is also in the running to replace Rice.

Robin van Persie has confirmed he intends to discuss his Arsenal future with manager Arsene Wenger at the end of the season.

"That is still the plan," said Van Persie regarding the talks after collecting the Football Writers' Footballer of the Year award on Thursday night.

"We haven't set a date but I will have a meeting with the boss like we did before now. We will be having a meeting about my future, and lots of other things. If you ask the likes of Robert Pires how he feels, what he feels like he will say 'I feel like a Gunner' - and whatever happens with me I will always be a Gunner. Arsenal is an unbelievable club. The player I am today is because of Arsenal. When I actually signed the deal (to join Arsenal) it was a dream come true. If you ask the likes of Robert Pires how he feels, what he feels like he will say 'I feel like a Gunner' - and whatever happens with me I will always be a Gunner."

Van Persie - who was also named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year - picked up the prestigious FWA accolade and admitted it was an unexpected honour.

"It makes me very proud to be here. I have seen the list [of previous winners], and for me, I never really thought I would be sitting here winning this trophy," Van Persie said. "But even this season I was not really thinking about winning a trophy for myself. I was just playing because I love it and for Arsenal to finish as high as possible in the league. When I found out I had actually won it, I was a bit surprised, and was like, 'What, me? Really?' It makes me really proud to be part of that history."

Van Persie said being honoured by both his peers and journalists alike was a humbling experience, adding: "The writers know everything about the season because they have seen every single game, analysed every goal, every move. They know everything about you.

"They are doing interviews with me and other players, they get a clear picture of who is the best player, which is why it means so much that these guys have voted for me."
