Frank Lampard is almost certain to miss this weekend's clash with Manchester United after the death of his mother.

Just hours after helping Chelsea to a combative draw at Liverpool, Lampard had returned to the bedside of his mother.

However, her health suddenly worsened and she passed away, it was confirmed this afternoon.

Pat Lampard, 58, had been admitted to hospital 10 days ago with pneumonia.

England international Lampard, 29, had missed the recent Barclays Premier League games against Wigan and Everton, but resumed training ahead of the Champions League tie on Tuesday after his mother had showed signs of positive improvement - only for her condition to deteriorate.

A spokesman for the Chelsea player confirmed this afternoon that Mrs Lampard had passed away.

A statement read: "It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Pat Lampard passed away this afternoon.

"Frank would like to acknowledge and say thank you for the compassion shown to him by the manager Avram Grant and all the staff at Chelsea Football Club during what has been a terribly traumatic period for him and his family.

"Frank and his family would also like to thank all the people who have been inundating them with wishes of support."

Lampard is now understandably a major doubt for Saturday's potential title decider against United at Stamford Bridge.

It is also uncertain whether the midfielder will feature in the second leg of the Champions League clash next week, which is delicately poised at 1-1.

Chelsea have offered Lampard their full support as he comes to terms with the loss.

A club statement read: "Everybody at Chelsea Football Club is absolutely devastated to hear the tragic news of the passing away of Pat Lampard, Frank's mother.

"Our sincerest and deepest condolences go out to Frank, his father Frank senior, sisters Natalie and Claire, and to their immediate family and friends.

"Pat was a very familiar face to many people at Chelsea.

"Her unswerving support for her son's career was evident at virtually every game that Frank participated in regardless of where it was being played, she would always be there to watch him with Frank's dad. Pat will be deeply missed by everyone at Chelsea."

The statement concluded: "The club will be offering all the support it can to Frank and his family at this time."

Liverpool have passed their condolences onto Lampard and his family.

Manager Rafa Benitez said: "It is difficult for him, especially before these important games.

"He has our sympathy because for him this is very, very bad news."

Benitez added: "Some of our players are mates with him from the [England] national team, so everyone feels the same."

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Victory for Manchester United will all but clinch a 17th league championship and record 10th Premier League title for the Red Devils. They actually need four points, but their goal difference advantage of 18 over second placed Chelsea is worth another point.

Chelsea go into Avram Grant's 50th match in charge, on the longest current unbeaten sequence in the Premier League of 18, and on an amazing 80-match undefeated home league streak, stretching back four years and two months.

Both clubs are chasing the Champions League/Premier League double. Indeed this match could be a dress rehearsal for the Champions League final in Moscow. United come into this clash on the back of Wednesday's goalless draw with Barcelona in the Nou Camp in the first leg of the semi-finals; Chelsea are also all square, courtesy of John Arne Riise's late, late own goal against Liverpool, at Anfield on Tuesday.

Chelsea clinched their second successive Premier League title in this fixture two seasons ago. Last season Manchester United had just been crowned champions before visiting Stamford Bridge. This time, Sir Alex Ferguson's men can effectively, if not mathematically, retain their title. The Red Devils have retained the crown four times previously, in 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2001.

Victory for the Blues, would leave them equal on points with the Red Devils with two to play. But to steal the title, the Stamford Bridge club would need to gain a better pair of results at Newcastle, and home to Bolton, than United manage home to West Ham, and away to Wigan. Conversely being only four points ahead of Arsenal, Chelsea could still concede second spot to the Gunners and miss out on direct qualification to the group stages of next season's Champions League.

United have conceded just 19 league goals, and are on course for a club record low, which currently stands at 23 shipped from 42 Second Division matches in 1924-25.

Manchester United are chasing a first goal in five Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge, and a first win there in six.

Chelsea have taken more Premier League points off United than any other club (40).

KEY PLAYER NOTES
CHELSEA

Frank LAMPARD is Chelsea's top scorer with 18 goals.

LAMPARD is also the clubs' leading marksmen in the Premier League, with 10. (Nicolas ANELKA scored 10 for Bolton and has got one for Chelsea.)

LAMPARD is either a double or a hat-trick short of 150 club career goals. Football statisticians dispute whether West Ham's opener in the 3-3 draw away to Crystal Palace on 5 May 1998 was a Lampard goal or an own goal by Sasa Curcic. Unfortunately the Dubious Goals Panel was not sitting in those days.

If selected:-

John TERRY will be making his 350th appearance for Chelsea.

Ricardo CARVALHO will be making his 100th Premier League appearance in Chelsea colours.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Cristiano RONALDO is Manchester United's top scorer with 38 goals.

The Portuguese is also United's leading Premier League marksman with 28 from 29 starts, including seven from the last seven. He is leading the race for the Barclays Golden Boot.

Between them, RONALDO, Carlos TEVEZ and Wayne ROONEY have scored 73 of Manchester United's 101 goals this season in all competitions, and 52 of their 73 (71%) in the Premier League.

Ryan GIGGS is still on course to equal Bobby Charlton's all time appearance record for Manchester United before the season is out. The Wales international will match Charlton's 759 appearances, if he plays a part in each of United's remaining matches and they get to the Champions League final.

If selected:-

John O'SHEA will be making his 200th career league appearance (Manchester United and Bournemouth).

If on the field from the outset:-

Long term injury, Gary NEVILLE will be making his 350th Premier League start for Manchester United.

Chris EAGLES will be making his 50th club league start (Manchester United, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday).

HEAD TO HEAD
Manchester United registered their first victory in six meetings with Chelsea (all competitions), in this season's reverse fixture.

Ferguson focuses on title decider

Sir Alex Ferguson wants Manchester United to overcome fatigue and effectively win the Premier League crown by beating Chelsea on Saturday.

A victory for United would open up a six-point lead, with two games left, and, given their vastly superior goal difference, virtually seal the title.

"There is a great incentive for us," United manager Ferguson told MUTV.

"What we have to do first though is get the players recovered from Barcelona. Hopefully we will be all right."

United drew 0-0 at the Nou Camp in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday - 24 hours after Chelsea drew their last-four clash with Liverpool.

"We have the disadvantage of a day's less rest than Chelsea and then there is the travelling of course," added Ferguson.

The United boss is also wary that the Blues will go into the game on a high after John Arne Riise's late own goal gave them a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

"As far as the second leg is concerned, there is no doubt Chelsea's morale will have been boosted," explained Ferguson.

"It was a great result for them, particularly the time of their equaliser. They have a marvellous chance of getting to Moscow after that game."

The Blues' impressive home record - they have not lost in 80 league games at Stamford Bridge stretching back to February 2004 - will give them further hope that they can keep their own title hopes alive.

However, United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is focused on sealing the three points that would all but end Chelsea's challenge.

"It will be a tough game but we have a great chance as the team is very confident," stated Ronaldo.

"We do not want to drop any points at Chelsea, so it is important we go for the victory."

Even a draw would leave the odds stacked in United's favour but Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech insists his team-mates have not given up hope of overhauling their rivals.

"Every game now is like a final," he explained. "Personally, I play football to play in the big games and this is an exciting time for everyone.

"The Premier League is getting towards the end and after Saturday we can be neck and neck with Man United.

"Of course, United score the most goals in the league - they have got the attacking threat - but we have got a pretty good record at Stamford Bridge, so we hope to keep that going.

"I always like playing against United, with their top players - you know you will have some work to do. When you keep a clean sheet against such an attacking team it is great."

D-Day for title rivals

On Saturday the Premier League heavyweights square up in what could be the decisive game of the 2007-2008 season.

Defending champions Manchester United take a three-point lead to west London to face their title rivals Chelsea.

Victory for Sir Alex Ferguson's team would take them six points clear of Chelsea, with two games remaining, but United's vastly superior goal difference - 54 to the Blues' 36 - would effectively give them an unassailable lead.

However, if Chelsea triumph they would be level on points with United to set up a potentially thrilling end to the season.

BBC Sport weighs up the two protagonists ahead of the Stamford Bridge clash.

PRE-FIGHT FORM
Both teams were slow out to the bell this season but picked themselves off the floor and look to be peaking at just the right time.

Manchester United's title credentials were being examined as early as August when they were held at home to Reading on the opening day of the season, drew at Portsmouth and then lost to their hometown rivals City.

Chelsea's wobbles came in September, with a defeat at Aston Villa and draws at home to Blackburn and Rosenborg in Europe, prompting the departure of manager Jose Mourinho.

When his successor Avram Grant started with a defeat and a draw, the Blues found themselves seven points off the pace.

But since then, Grant's Chelsea have been defeated only once in 28 Premier League outings and are currently on an unbeaten run of 18 league matches.

United, meanwhile, registered eight straight league wins after their early struggles and have got stronger as the season has gone.

They are the league's most prolific scorers and have the stingiest defence.

Both teams have had 20 clean sheets and since the turn of the year their records are almost identical.

Both sides drew in Europe in midweek, although Chelsea have had an extra day to recover.

Manchester United hold a three-point lead in the Premier League; Chelsea have the home advantage.

And what an advantage it is. They have not lost a league game at Stamford Bridge since Arsenal beat them 2-1 over four years ago - which could prove to be the crucial factor.

VERDICT: Round one to Chelsea

HEAD TO HEAD
Roman Abramovich's arrival at Chelsea in 2003 catapulted the club into a position where they are now the biggest rivals to United's English dominance, both on the field and in the transfer market.

MAN UTD IN LEAGUE AT CHELSEA SINCE 1992
              Post-Abramovich
        P4    W      D1    L3    GF 0      GA 5
            Pre-Abramovich
        P11  W5    D4      L2    GF 18    GA 14

They have shared the last three Premier League titles, Chelsea clinching the 2005-2006 crown with a 3-0 win over Manchester United but then having to lead a guard of honour to the men from Old Trafford as they celebrated winning the championship last season at Stamford Bridge.

The sides have met twice already during the current campaign, with United enjoying success in both matches.

They triumphed on penalties to win the Community Shield in August after a 1-1 draw at Wembley and then, in Grant's first game in charge, Louis Saha and Carlos Tevez gave United a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.

This will be the Israeli's first opportunity to properly test himself against Ferguson.

If Grant needs a confidence booster ahead of a clash with the grand master he need only cast his eye at Chelsea's record against United under Roman's rule.

• Before this season United had tasted success against the Blues in the Abramovich era in only one game (November 2005). Chelsea have won six times.

• In cup competitions the Red Devils have fared little better, losing in the FA Cup final last season and the League Cup semi-finals in 2005.

• United have not scored at Stamford Bridge since Abramovich took over - a run of 474 minutes since Ryan Giggs' equaliser in a 2-2 draw back in August 2002.

• Until the 2-0 win in September, United had failed to score more than once against the Blues.

VERDICT: Round two to Chelsea

KNOCKOUT POTENTIAL
With seemingly so little between the two sides, and with the stakes so high, Saturday's game could be decided by a piece of magic.

There are plenty of candidates capable of conjuring that killer blow.

United have scored 13 more goals than their rivals and possess the country's runaway top scorer in 28-goal Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 38 in all competitions.

Carlos Tevez (13 goals) and Wayne Rooney (11) have also scored more times than Chelsea's leading marksman Frank Lampard (10).

But there is a glimmer of hope for the challengers.

Rooney and Ronaldo might strike fear into most sides but the Chelsea back line have proved a different proposition.

Ronaldo has yet to find the net in 11 games against Chelsea in a United shirt, while Rooney has failed to register in 15 matches against the Blues for Everton and Manchester United.

On the other hand, Chelsea have plenty of men with match-winning experience in these clashes, in the shape of Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, Ricardo Carvalho and Lampard.

VERDICT: Round three to Manchester United

JUDGEMENT DAY
So Chelsea are the winners on a split decision but even a Blues victory will not see them overtake United at the top on account of the champions' better goal difference.

REMAINING GAMES
Saturday 3 May
MAN UTD v West Ham

Monday 5 May
Newcastle v CHELSEA

Sunday 11 May
CHELSEA v Bolton,
Wigan v MAN UTD

Chelsea also look to have the tougher task after this weekend, with a trip to in-form Newcastle still awaiting them.

But United have already shown some frailties in their attempts to cross the finish line, dropping points against Middlesbrough and Blackburn .

There is every chance the title could go down to the wire for the first time this century.

#10152 chironda gata voi ramine numa in aparare chiar daca ma maninca sa ma duc in atac

FUCK ME. Ce gol Rooney!!! Pur si simplu nu am cuvinte. :w00t:
