Ferguson concern over Rome return
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINAL FIRST LEG
Venue: Stadio Olimpico Date: Tuesday, 1 April Kick-off: 21.45

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he is worried Manchester United's Champions League quarter-final against Roma could be marred by crowd trouble.

Police in Rome have mounted a major security operation ahead of Tuesday's game after violence during last season's meeting between the two.

"After the experience of last year it is a concern," Ferguson said.

"But I think the police have been working hard to ensure it doesn't happen again."

The last two games between the sides in the Italian capital have been marred by crowd trouble and four United supporters are still in jail following violence last December.

Tournament organiser Uefa has warned it may take next year's final away from Rome if there is any repeat of those scenes.

"Last time I gave Ferguson some great wine as a gift, but this time there will be no wine and no gifts"  -  Luciano Spalletti,Roma boss

A Uefa spokesman said: "There has been great progress made inside Rome's Olympic Stadium but the attacks one kilometre from the stadium worry us.

"The police say they cannot control the city and that is not satisfactory. If we see a repeat of what we have seen so far it may be wise to move the 2009 Champions League final from Rome.

"Knifings are attempted murder. We cannot be held hostage by a few criminals."

Ferguson added: "For the reputation of both our teams we hope it is a good game, a competitive game.

"There is rivalry among the fans, there is nothing wrong with that, but as long as it stays the rivalry of supporting your own team then we can go home happy in the knowledge that everything has gone peacefully."

About 4,000 United fans have travelled to Italy for the game, and BBC Sport's John Murray, who is in Rome, said there had been no news of trouble overnight.

United beat Roma 8-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals last season, with a 7-1 demolition of the Italian side at Old Trafford following a 2-1 defeat in Rome.

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti said: "Last time I gave Ferguson some great wine as a gift, but this time there will be no wine and no gifts - on the field or off the field," Spalletti said.

"We gave them seven last time and there can be no repeat. Manchester United are the best team in the world but we are motivated to beat them.

"United have some sensational players, but it is a long time since they have got a very important win abroad.

"They are fantastic at Old Trafford as they showed against us last year, but they are not quite the same away from home."

But Ferguson is optimistic his side can go all the way this season and add another Champions League title to the one United won in 1999.

"This is probably my best squad ever in terms of completeness"  -Sir Alex Ferguson

"It is going to be hard but we have the players who can make us successful," he said.

"They are confident about expressing themselves and they enjoy playing.

"This is probably my best squad ever in terms of completeness.

"The one things these lads have is the quality to play on the big occasion. In that sense, it is like 1999.

"They are very confident - Nani, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Anderson, [Wayne] Rooney. It gives you hope they can handle big occasions like that.

"You want to see them express themselves and be fearless. I am not slightly worried about their temperament."

Ferguson said he felt Ronaldo, who has scored a remarkable 35 goals so far this season, was offered more protection from referees in European competition than he gets in England.

"In Spain and Italy there is far more protection for the player with the ball. That is good," he said.

"The English game is built on real passion and speed. You do not get these games every week in Europe.

"There it is played at a more leisurely pace, then speeds up in the last third.

"Our games sees a tackle every 30 seconds so there is more risk of injury.

"But the English game will change now. It has to after the incident involving the Arsenal player."

That was a reference to Croatian Eduardo da Silva, who is expected to be out for nine months after suffering a bad leg break in a tackle by Birmingham's Martin Taylor in February.

United warmed up for Tuesday's big game in Rome with a superb 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday to retain their lead five-point lead at the top of the Premiership.

Rooney ended his six-match goal drought with a brace against Villa and is expecting United to take their form into Europe.

"Roma is going to be a massive game for us and we prepared the right way with the win against Villa," said the England striker.

"To be at this club, with the football we play, is brilliant. It's something every player would want to be part of."

Spalletti, who is missing captain and talisman Francesco Totti through injury for the first leg, is confident his team will rise to the occasion this time against Ferguson's men.

"These are special games, which bring something extra out of the players," he said.

"We are, as always, well prepared with the right sort of calmness to go out and express the right characteristics and the right quality."

Coke Put Fizz Into Old Trafford With Huge New Sponsorship Deal

United are set to announce a £300m sponsorship deal with Coca-Cola that will double their current income from AIG but will controversially see the club's ground re-branded as ''The Coca-Cola Stadium at Old Trafford.''

Coca-Cola are ready to buy out United's existing contract with AIG which still has two years left to run, for what they describe as a "unique opportunity" to be associated with United and their stadium.

The Glazer family are believed to have been in secret negotiations with the Atlanta-based beverage giant for the past six months and have also courted rival bids from McDonalds, Microsoft and furniture giant, DFS.

However, it is understood that Coca-Cola are willing to pay £100m up front with the rest of the deal being spread evenly over the next four years, which will automatically clear the Glazers' interest payments for this year and put them into credit for the financial year which ends in April 2010.

The famous Coca-Cola logo will be emblazoned on United's red shirts from the start of next season while other kits will reflect Coca-Cola products. It is understood that a black away strip will feature the logo of "Coke Zero" and a zip will be inserted on the collar which resembles the ring pull on a can of the refreshing fizzy drink which has all the great taste of Coke but no sugar.

Big clubs like Arsenal, Bolton Wanderers and York City have already sold the naming rights to their stadiums and United are now ready to follow suit.

Stands at Old Trafford are to be renamed to represent the new sponsor with the East Stand to be renamed "The Asa Candler stand" after the company's founder, the South Stand now known as "The Cherry Coke Stand", the North Stand as the "The Diet Coke Stand" and the Stretford End as "The Tab Clear Stand".

The deal means that Coke will have exclusive rights to catering at Old Trafford and it is understood that only Coca-Cola products will be sold at the concourse from now on, meaning there's no beer, only fizzy drinks which rot your teeth and don't get you drunk.

Fans groups have welcomed the move and an IMUSA spokesman said:

"We were getting a bit bored of the name 'Old Trafford' anyway. What's so good about being old? At least the new deal clears some of the debt, which should mean more money for transfers and we're pretty sure that the Glazers will use this opportunity to lower ticket prices too. We expect to see Kaka and Ronaldinho at OT, sorry, I mean the Coca-Cola Stadium next year and we reckon we'll be getting in for 63p with enough change from a quid to get a chippy to eat on the bus home."

In the run-up to tonight's Champions League quarter-final, Luciano Spalletti has mocked Manchester United's away record in Europe - and looking at the statistics, the Roma coach might just have a point.

Led by the magical Cristiano Ronaldo, United head into the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico in terrific form, top of the Premier League and confident of claiming a 10th semi-final appearance in Europe's premier club competition.

But a quick look at United's recent European away form - especially against Italian opposition - suggests that United will have it far from easy in Rome.

The statistics make uneasy reading for United fans - their side have won just three of their last 18 games on the continent, and in Italy, their record is no better.

Out of 14 games played over there, United have lost 10 and won just two. Indeed, their winless streak in Italy was only broken in Turin just under nine years ago - when Roy Keane's header kick-started the now-famous semi-final comeback against Juventus on their way to being crowned European champions in 1999.

Since then, United have travelled to Italy six times, but managed just one further win - a 3-0 rout of Juventus back in 2002-03 - losing four more times and drawing once.

Hardly a record on Italian soil to strike fear into a Roma side who are currently pushing Internazionale for the Scudetto and who are vastly improved on the team that capitulated 7-1 at Old Trafford a year ago.

Even without their injured talisman Francesco Totti, Roma will be a different proposition altogether tonight, and with United's poor recent history on the peninsula, eyebrows should not be raised too high if the hosts are able to grab a first leg advantage.

Those six games in Italy since the Treble-winning season in 1999:

1999-2000 - Second group phase - Fiorentina 2-0 United . United fall to goals from Gabriel Batistuta and Abel Balbo but still manage to top the group. Eventually go out to Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage.

2002-03 - Second group phase - Juventus 0-3 United. An imperious performance from United, and two-goal Ryan Giggs in particular, gives United their second win at the Stadio Delle Alpi in four years - but again it is Real Madrid who end their hopes in the quarters.

2004-05 - First knockout phase - Milan 1-0 United. Hernan Crespo adds to his first leg strike in Manchester to fire Milan into the quarter-finals 2-0 on aggregate.

2006-07 - Quarter-finals - Roma 2-1 United. Rodrigo Taddei and Mirko Vucinic - both likely to start tonight - seal victory against 10-man United, but it is Alex Ferguson's side who go through 8-3 on aggregate following their stunning 7-1 win in the return leg.

2006-07 - Semi-finals - Milan 3-0 United. One of the most disappointing United performances in Europe of recent times. Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Alberto Gilardino overturn a 2-3 deficit from the first leg in fine style to send the eventual winners through.

2007-08 - Group phase - Roma 1-1 United. Gerard Pique's header is cancelled out by Mancini as Roma claim a point. United still run out group winners before being drawn against Lyon in the first knockout phase. A 2-1 aggregate win over the French champions sees them book tonight's clash with Roma.

Nui nimic de data asta ii batem si nu glumesc:) Glory MU
