"Over the last decade, we've worked upon bringing young talent into the club, like, Wayne Rooney, Chicharito, Anderson and Nani, and we've brought all these players," said the legendary United boss.

"But that doesn't dismiss the fact that we like to produce our own young players and I think there are several players in the present youth team who are doing really well.

"The likes of Ryan Tunnicliffe and Ravel Morrison, you see some of them doing very, very well, so we're always going to put an emphasis on young players coming through from the youth team. That will always be the case.

"We've got some excellent young players of good ages, you know. Like, for instance, Chicharito, who is 22, Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson, who are 23, and Chris Smalling who's 21.

"So, yeah, we've got a good nucleus of young players in the club which gives you the foundation to be able to protect the future and know it's going to be alright."

Fletch's empathy with fans

Darren Fletcher can empathise with United's supporters as the Reds bid to clinch the first leg of a remarkable double at Ewood Park on Saturday.

The midfielder knows better than most what it's like to watch from the sidelines after two months out due to a virus that robbed him of nearly a stone in weight.

As the Scotland international hopes to be involved against Blackburn for Sir Alex Ferguson's title-chasers, he knows the fans will be put through the mill as they eagerly await the chance to celebrate at least a point that would put Chelsea out of reach.

"I turned into a bit of a mad fan [while I was out]," he told United Review. "It's odd: it seems the further away from it you are, the more intense the feelings.

"My family are glad I'm back now. They had to leave the house a few times when a game was on because I turned into a completely different person. It's frustrating watching on TV because there's nothing you can do to influence the situation."

Fletcher is keen to play some part in the season's gripping finale, with the manager hinting he could be involved in the Champions League final with Barcelona at Wembley after missing out on the Rome clash between the two European superpowers in 2009.

"I just want to contribute however I can," Fletcher stressed. "Whether that's starting or coming off the bench, it doesn't matter.
"I just want to be involved, especially at this stage of the season. Challenging for trophies is what being a Manchester United player is all about and I want to be part of that."

The 27-year-old has also listed the key ingredients required to become champions of England. "Experience, resilience, fighting spirit, good players, good performances and good preparation," he stated. "It's a combination of lots of things."

Manchester United fans campaign to get 19 to No1 when club wins title

Manchester United supporters have begun a campaign on fans' forums and on Twitter to get the Paul Hardcastle song 19 to No1 in the charts for this Sunday, when United may have already been crowned champions for the 19th time by beating Blackburn Rovers.

The song, first released in 1985 and highlighting the average age of soldiers who fought in the Vietnam war, costs 79p to buy from iTunes and it is expected that 30,000 downloads would be enough to top the UK singles chart.

United's fierce rivalry with Liverpool is the chief motivation behind the move. The Merseyside club is currently level on 18 titles with United, whose fans need little encouragement to crow about their impending record 19th title. Sir Alex Ferguson's statement in an interview with the Guardian in 2002 that his greatest achievement was "knocking Liverpool right off their fucking perch" is seen as another reason why United fans want to attract maximum publicity to this title win.

Hardcastle, whose song topped the charts for five weeks in 1985 before being toppled by Crowd's charity cover of You'll Never Walk Alone, is a Chelsea supporter, further motivation for United supporters to inflict more pain on their closest rivals this season, whose title hopes they ended on Sunday. The musician isn't taking the campaign too badly and seems happy with the publicity. "My twitter has exploded today," Hardcastle said. "So the challenge to the MU fans is get it back in the charts then, works for me."

But while some supporters have encouraged others to buy 19 to "make the Scousers cry" some believe downloading a song about the Vietnam war to celebrate winning the Premier League poses moral questions.

One poster by the name of Carlsberg King said on Manchester United's official website: "It's just a pity the song is about the poor soldiers who were basically kids fighting (and dying) in Vietnam. In which case I don't think it's particularly appropriate."

In response it was suggested that perhaps supporters could encourage EMI, who own the rights to the song, to give a percentage of the proceeds from sales to Vietnam veterans' associations. Hardcastle is supportive of this idea. "I'm asking EMI to put proceeds to charity," he said. "I see it then as a good cause.

United explode myth

One of the great myths of the season that has been repeated so often that it’s almost now taken as a fact is that this United team is not particularly good. Can anyone seriously still say that after Sunday’s mauling of Chelsea?

Producing your best performances when it matters most is a sure sign of a top team – and what a display United produced at Old Trafford. They tore into Chelsea from the off - they had more energy in midfield, pulled the outgoing champions all over the place up front and were no nonsense at the back. You simply have to hand it to the boss – his team selection raised a few eyebrows on Wednesday against Schalke but it was fully justified when the freshness that was missing at Arsenal returned in spectacular fashion.

I’d probably agree with Didier Deschamps’ remark earlier this season when he said this United team didn’t have as much “fantasy” as previous models. When you lose a once-in-a-decade talent like Cristiano Ronaldo, that’s natural. But tell me this – did Ronaldo ever give Ashley Cole as much trouble as Antonio Valencia did on Sunday? The difference with this United side is that it’s not defined by one individual talent, it’s very much a team effort. That was perfectly illustrated by the giant team hug at the final whistle, there is a wonderful togetherness about this group that marks it out from its rivals.

Therefore it’s probably wrong to pick out individuals but can anyone explain what Ji-sung Park is given for his pre-match meal? He was everywhere, perhaps giving the finest all-round performance of his United career. And how Chelsea must be sick of the sight of Ryan Giggs – he set up all three Champions League quarter-final goals United scored against the West Londoners and then crossed for Nemanja’s winner yesterday – ageless brilliance. And 20 goals for Chicharito in his first season in English football is a remarkable return for a guy who cost around £44million less than Fernando Torres.

Despite Uniteds manifest superiority, they still managed to make it a nerve-shredding finale – it’s the United way after all. Paddy and myself were in an awful state on the commentary gantry. The last 10 minutes or so were absolute agony – Chelsea should have been put to the sword yet could have picked up a ridiculously flattering point. Paddy was up and down like a yo-yo and his reaction when the goals went in and at the final whistle was hilarious – he was standing up twirling his microphone, I wish there’d been a camera on him!

So let’s get the job done at Ewood Park on Saturday, a year after we effectively lost the title there, this time we can win it. The timing of the game means it might well overshadow City’s big day out at Wembley. Shame.
