Rio Ferdinand: I want to be Red for good

England international defender Rio Ferdinand has been at Manchester United since 2002 and the 29-year old insists that he wants to stay at Old Trafford for the rest of his playing career.

Rio Ferdinand’s current contract with the club ends in 2009 and although follow up progress on a new and improved contract is still not there, Rio is confident that an agreement can be reached. He remarks:

I want to finish my career at United and the plan is to sign a contract that will enable me to do that.

I don’t want to go over what happened before. I think it’s obvious that I am happy at United.

It’s important to me that I can secure my future here. It’s important for everyone to get themselves sorted out and I think the club are trying to tie down lots of players.

That bodes well for the future of the club. It’s a fantastic place to play, the fans are brilliant and I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be.

Rio Ferdinand’s partnership with Nemanja Vidic in Man United’s central defence has been one of the best in Europe since last season and Rio does deserve a long term contract. Man United should try and confirm a new deal sooner rather than later.

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Lyon after fans aimed a laser at Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo during their Champions League clash at the Stade Gerland.

Portugal winger Ronaldo was dazzled by the laser before and during the first leg of the last-16 tie on February 20.

Speaking after the game United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed: 'We reported the matter to UEFA before the game.

Ronaldinho told the Sunday Mirror: "I know Chelsea want to sign me but they are a team I do not want to play for.

"When I faced them in the Champions League they went to kick my feet before trying to get the ball.

"That kind of game is not for me and rather than ever play like that I would say, 'no thank you'.

"I would also say no thanks to an offer from Inter or AC Milan. I am trying to give my best to Barcelona."
