Reds squad in rude health

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to have several selection dilemmas when West Bromwich Albion visit Old Trafford following the international break.

The United squad is arguably stronger now that any other point during 2010, with Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes all available again after injury, Owen Hargreaves now in full training and weekend absentee Wayne Rooney expected to be fit in time for England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on Tuesday week.

Add to that the way new signings Bebe, Chris Smalling and Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez are settling in, plus the fact international retiree Ryan Giggs will have had another fortnight to recover from injury, and things are looking rather rosey for Sir Alex. Selecting a side from a huge squad will be his next challenge, although his back four is beginning to pick itself again after the successful reunion of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

“When you know your defensive part is strong and solid, then it gives you the encouragement and the freedom to attack at will," said Sir Alex. "If our defence is solid, then we can wait until the 85th minute to win a game. We’ve always been able to do that."

In central midfield, Anderson, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Hargreaves, Darren Fletcher and Darron Gibson are all vying for a maximum three places. Meanwhile up front, Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov are being pushed by Chicharito and the pair who started at Sunderland - Michael Owen and Federico Macheda.

“With Michael, Chicharito and Kiko, we’ve got really terrific choices," said Sir Alex. "This is where it’s proving more difficult for me, choosing the right players in the right game."

Solid back four bodes well

MUTV's Stewart Gardner commentated on a fourth away draw at the weekend...

You know it’s been a bad weekend when the only pleasure you derive is from the misfortune of others. Liverpool’s extraordinary defeat at home to Blackpool reduced the pain of yet another away draw for United.

On the face of it, a point at Sunderland really isn’t such a bad result but when points have already been thrown away at Fulham and Everton then it felt like a bad day at the Stadium of Light.

If we’re honest, it could have been a lot worse. I’ve rarely seen 45 minutes in the league in which United have been so dominated. That first-period performance was so unlike the Reds. There was a lack of energy, little pressing in midfield and no threat whatsoever as an attacking force. I actually felt sorry for Michael Owen as the service to him was non existent.

Although United were much better in the second half, and might have pinched what would have been a rather cheeky three points, the Reds need to find a cure for the post-Europe blues. Last season Sir Alex’s lost five out of the 10 weekend games that followed midweek Champions League matches.

However, I really don’t think there needs to be any doom and gloom about United’s season so far despite Chelsea’s rather alarming five-point lead. Remember, the Reds haven’t lost a game yet and, crucially, the Ferdinand/Vidic partnership is back in full swing. The Valencia and Sunderland games show that the defensive solidity of old is back, and that’s always been a building block for success for United.

Apart from Saturday, scoring goals hasn’t been much of a problem for United so far. Sixteen goals from seven games marks a good return and when Wayne Rooney is fit and firing again, as he surely will be very soon, then things will be looking significantly brighter. As we enter the international break, I would say we’ve had a solid start to the campaign and provided a good platform for the coming months.

Count your blessings… you could be a Liverpool fan, for instance, or Sunderland’s insurer who will surely be facing a substantial bill this morning for several designer suits that were ruined by sewage - John O’Shea told me his clothes had to be burnt for health reasons! Steve Bruce has tried everything to get the better of Sir Alex over the years… even a leaking pipe that disrupted United’s pre-match preparations didn’t do the trick.

A dressing room malfunction

As if overcoming a pepped-up Sunderland side wasn't tough enough, United's pre-match preparations at the Stadium of Light were further complicated by an unlikely setback.

John O'Shea and Edwin van der Sar have confirmed that kick-off was delayed because of a burst sewage pipe in the Reds' dressing room.

In his post-match interview with MUTV, O'Shea laughed: “I think my suit’s in the skip! I think it will have to be burned for health reasons.

"It was a strange smell when we came back in from the warm-up and when we realised what happened, I think about eight or ten suits had to be burned. Thankfully we weren’t sitting down in the dressing room when it happened!”

Edwin van der Sar was also able to see the funny side of events, but it seems unlikely that kitman Albert Morgan was able to immediately derive any jollity from the situation.

"I just came out from my warm-up and they put us in a different room and said 'don't go in the dressing room'," said the Dutchman. "The smell was horrendous, so a lot of lads' suits, washbags and shoes had to be thrown away.

"Albert was struggling to get the shinpads cleaned and everything, but in the end we managed and I think it was a rare moment."
